Hacia Dentro / Fuera.
El pasado año, el Museo Fernándo Peña Defilló (MFPD) nos hizo a Ángel Urrely y a mí la propuesta de realizar un conjunto de dibujos sobre papel a partir de la obra de Fernando Peña Defilló.
Una vez definidas las pautas estructurales de la muestra, nos tocaba emprender en binomio este desafío.
Durante semanas, nos adentramos, detalladamente, en la obra pictórica de Fernando Peña Defilló, buscando, con deferencia y sin complacencias, las resonancias posibles con nuestras propias obras. Pasar de la pintura al dibujo, nos brindaba una distancia natural y una gran libertad en el modo de integrar las diferentes temáticas y las expresiones formales de Peña Defilló. Su producción nos llevó a discusiones y búsquedas profundas que abarcaban los orígenes de lo conocido y el desconocido devenir de la humanidad.
En el momento de integrar el taller, la obra de Fernando Peña Defilló se manifestó a manera de espejo. La solución estaba en nuestra propia obra y en sus problemáticas. Ángel y yo nos apropiamos de aquello que repercutía en cada uno de nosotros, correspondiendo a nuestra propia personalidad artística.
En la parte que me concierne, comencé creando una unidad al llenar la superficie de la hoja de papel de aguadas y manchas en tinta china, en eco con Defilló. Realicé inventarios de tubos de pintura, de frutas y de llaves, de panes, de huevos, de mariposas, de plantas, segura de la persistencia de lo humano en ello.
En « ¿Arde París? », formulé un momento sagrado entre amigos, memoria de pasados y presentes de un París también mío. Y hablé de ellas, de nosotras, tomando como punto de partida las obras originales con sus títulos « La espera » y « Cuerpo presente ». La apropiación a partir de esta última obra era fundamental, porque en ella se expresa trágicamente el derecho y la voluntad de ser uno y el precio a pagar por ello.

La casa. Dentro y fuera.
La primera vez que hablé con Inés Tolentino sobre la idea de exponer juntos fue en el verano de 2018, junto al pozo de una casa señorial en la Zona Colonial de Santo Domingo.
Trabajar, partiendo de la obra de Defilló, fue la propuesta de Alex Martínez en el Museo Fernando Peña Defilló, para iniciar este proyecto expositivo.
Durante cuatro meses, me reunía con Inés ( casi siempre los lunes ), en mi casa, en la antigua calle de La Luna, en la Ciudad Colonial. Ambos encontramos el tema casi al unísono, y cada cual se retiró a su taller a pintar.
Partí de la obra que Peña Defilló hizo sobre las casitas tradicionales, que aún existen en los campos y ciudades de la República Dominicana. Reuní un grupo de bocetos que hice a partir de las fotografías que tomé en un viaje familiar a Puerto Plata.
Les pedí a varios amigos que me hablaran de su relación con la vivienda familiar, aquella que perdura a través del recuerdo.
Sobre el papel, he dibujado la casa que sobrevive, anclada en la memoria, y se sostiene como un náufrago en un mar de edificios ajenos e impersonales. La casa, como el lugar soñado en el centro de una ciudad laberinto. La casa que no está, la que se tragó la marea de bloques y cemento, como la casa de mi padre en La Habana al borde del mar, que ahora duerme bajo el agua.

Last year, the Fernando Peña Defilló Museum (MFPD) made Angel Urrely and me the proposal to make a set of drawings on paper from the work of Fernando Peña Defilló.
Once the structural guidelines of the sample were defined, we had to undertake this challenge in binomial.
For weeks, we enter, in detail, in the pictorial work of Fernando Peña Defilló, seeking, with deference and without complacency, the possible resonances with our own works. Moving from painting to drawing, it gave us a natural distance and great freedom in the way of integrating the different themes and formal expressions of Peña Defilló. Its production led us to deep discussions and searches that covered the origins of the known and the unknown future of humanity.
At the time of integrating the workshop, Fernando Peña Defilló's work manifested itself as a mirror. The solution was in our own work and in its problems. Angel and I appropriate what had an impact on each one of us, corresponding to our own artistic personality.
In the part that concerns me, I started creating a unit by filling the surface of the sheet of gouache paper and stains in Chinese ink, echoing with Defilló. I made inventories of paint tubes, fruits and keys, breads, eggs, butterflies, plants, sure of the persistence of the human in it.
In «Does Paris burn? », I formulated a sacred moment among friends, memory of past and present of a Paris also mine. And I talked about them, about us, taking as a starting point the original works with their titles "Waiting" and "Present body". The appropriation from this last work was fundamental, because it tragically expresses the right and the will to be one and the price to pay for it.

The first time I spoke with Inés Tolentino about the idea of exhibiting together was in the summer of 2018, next to the well of a stately home in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo.
Working, based on Defilló's work, was the proposal of Alex Martínez at the Fernando Peña Defilló Museum, to start this exhibition project.
For four months, I met with Ines (almost always on Mondays), in my house, in the old street of La Luna, in the Colonial City. We both found the subject almost in unison, and each one retired to his workshop to paint.
I started from the work that Peña Defilló did on the traditional houses, which still exist in the fields and cities of the Dominican Republic. I gathered a group of sketches that I made from the photographs I took on a family trip to Puerto Plata.
I asked several friends to tell me about their relationship with family housing, the one that endures through memory.
On paper, I have drawn the house that survives, anchored in memory, and is held like a shipwrecked man in a sea of alien and impersonal buildings. The house, like the dream place in the center of a labyrinth city. The house that is not there, the one that swallowed the tide of blocks and cement, like my father's house in Havana at the edge of the sea, which now sleeps underwater.
