La galería Lyle O. Reitzel Arte Contemporáneo celebra sus 27 años de existencia, presentando una espectacular exposición individual a cargo del artista español Santiago Ydáñez, titulada “Deep Blue”, a inaugurarse el próximo Viernes 11 de Noviembre a las 7PM en su sede de la Torre Piantini. Su primera experiencia memorable en Santo Domingo ocurrió con su solo show Fulgor en el 2017.

La obra de Santiago exuda una proeza técnico-expresiva que combina la soltura del
trazo con la efectividad técnica y comunicativa de su factura. Según el crítico de arte alemán Marius Christian Bomholt:
“Más sustancial es, desde luego, reconocer que Santiago emplea la lógica de la superficie con gran maestría en la muestra que nos ofrece bajo el título de Deep Blue. A primera vista, este espléndido conjunto de retratos monumentales —algunos de ellos del propio artista, otros parte de una selección sugerente de modelos— parece proyectar una profundidad casi mística, configurar la sombra de un misterio, el atisbo de un centro ausente, conocido solamente por esos rostros bellos y silentes, iniciados. Tal impresión se acrecienta cuando reparamos en las expresiones absortas o extasiadas que exhiben muchos de ellos; se intensifica asimismo cuando intentamos adivinar el motivo o la función del color blanco y azul que adorna algunos.
La súbita irrupción del tiburón en medio de estos retratos, sin embargo, nos puede servir como pista de que, antes que de un ritual místico, aquí se trata de un juego alegre, tal vez hasta irónico. Imposible no detectar en él la reminiscencia de uno de los artistas más célebres de la postmodernidad ya ‘clásica’: Damien Hirst, quien saltó a la fama con su tiburón preservado en formol y adornado con un título aparatoso. Pero aparte de esa referencia diáfana, la aparición del animal acuático resulta, en esencia, indescifrable: su relación con las demás piezas es dudosa, su valor semántico difícil de determinar. Y precisamente con ese gesto, la muestra no sólo escenifica la celebración del face value tan propia del arte postmoderno, sino que encuentra un punto de contacto con esa ilegibilidad última del rostro del otro. Del tiburón, plasmado así a secas, entendemos poco. De los rostros, en cambio, creemos entender, aun cuando, en realidad, muchas veces nos damos cuenta de que, cuanto más los contemplamos, nos vemos. La expresión facial, el gesto, el talante nos revelan algo, por supuesto, pero en el fondo, la cara es pura superficie.”
Santiago Ydáñez (Jaén, 1967), graduado en Bellas Artes en la Universidad de Granada, ha realizado talleres entre otros con Juan Genovés y Mitsuo Miura. Ha recibido importantes distinciones y es actualmente uno de los pintores jóvenes españoles con mayor proyección internacional. Obtuvo entre otros el Premio de Pintura ABC en 2002 y Premio de Pintura Generación 2002 de Caja Madrid, la Beca del Colegio de España en París del Ministerio de Cultura en 2001, la Beca de la Fundación Marcelino Botín en 1998 y la Beca de la Academia de España en Roma. Su obra se encuentra en las colecciones de la Fundación Botín (Santander), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid) entre otros. Actualmente vive y trabaja en Berlín y Jaén. La exposición estará abierta al público hasta el 30 de enero del año 2023.

The Lyle O. Reitzel Contemporary Art gallery celebrates its 27 years of existence, presenting a spectacular individual exhibition by the Spanish artist Santiago Ydáñez, entitled "Deep Blue", to be inaugurated next Friday, November 11 at 7PM at its headquarters in the Piantini Tower. His first memorable experience in Santo Domingo occurred with his solo show Fulgor in 2017.
Santiago's work exudes a technical-expressive prowess that combines the ease of the line with the technical and communicative effectiveness of its execution. According to the German art critic Marius Christian Bomholt:
“More substantial, of course, is recognizing that Santiago uses the logic of the surface with great mastery in the sample that he offers us under the title of Deep Blue. At first glance, this splendid set of monumental portraits - some of them by the artist himself, others part of a suggestive selection of models - seems to project an almost mystical depth, to configure the shadow of a mystery, the glimpse of an absent center, known only by those beautiful and silent faces, initiates. Such an impression is increased when we notice the absorbed or ecstatic expressions that many of them exhibit; it also intensifies when we try to guess the reason or function of the white and blue color that adorns some.
The sudden appearance of the shark in the midst of these portraits, however, can serve as a clue that, rather than a mystical ritual, this is a joyful game, perhaps even ironic. Impossible not to detect in it the reminiscence of one of the most famous artists of the now 'classical' postmodernity: Damien Hirst, who rose to fame with his shark preserved in formalin and adorned with an ostentatious title. But apart from that diaphanous reference, the appearance of the aquatic animal is, in essence, indecipherable: its relationship with the other pieces is doubtful, its semantic value difficult to determine. And precisely with this gesture, the exhibition not only stages the celebration of the face value so typical of postmodern art, but also finds a point of contact with that ultimate illegibility of the other's face. Of the shark, embodied in this way, we understand little. Of faces, on the other hand, we think we understand, even when, in reality, we often realize that the more we look at them, the more we see ourselves. The facial expression, the gesture, the mood reveal something to us, of course, but deep down, the face is pure surface.”
Santiago Ydáñez (Jaén, 1967), graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Granada, has carried out workshops with Juan Genovés and Mitsuo Miura, among others. He has received important distinctions and is currently one of the young Spanish painters with the greatest international projection. He received, among others, the ABC Painting Prize in 2002 and the 2002 Generation Painting Prize from Caja Madrid, the Scholarship from the College of Spain in Paris from the Ministry of Culture in 2001, the Scholarship from the Marcelino Botín Foundation in 1998 and the Scholarship from the Academy of Spain in Rome. His work can be found in the collections of the Fundación Botín (Santander), the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), among others. He currently lives and works in Berlin and Jaén. The exhibition will be open to the public until January 30, 2023.
