Comienza el día cero...

Ya casi llega el día en que me toque presentarles mi exposición "Háganse los peces" y quisiera compartir algunas reflexiones sobre la misma. Hace unos años, mi querido amigo Mario Arvelo bautizó esta foto con el nombre de "Fiat Pisces" o "Háganse los Peces". Para mí fue una iniciativa maravillosa, asumí el nombre para una serie de fotos que llevaba tomando hace varios años, pero de forma más constante y organizada hace diez.

Empezó como una inquietud por documentar esa actividad tan básica, extemporánea, que en mi opinión desaparecería pronto, y luego cuando ya lo asumí como un proyecto quise que fuera más dilatado, influenciado entonces por la obra de Graciela Iturbide, Flor Garduño, Mario Cravo Neto, Jozef Koudelka y Domingo Batista entre otros fotógrafos que admiro. Para el maestro Batista debo hacer una mención especial primero por considerarlo mi mentor fotográfico y además porque su trabajo "Domingo Batista - INFRARROJO" fue más que influencia, alimento del alma. Según iba surgiendo el imaginario del proyecto todo fue tomando forma. Lo presenté en varios visionados de portafolio, y todos me aportaron alguna idea interesante o de plano me disuadieron de continuar por caminos que entendían que llevarían a ningún lado. Juan Antonio Molina Cuesta, Willy Castellanos, Yolanda Andrade, Marcos López, Fer Figheras, Maria Del Carmen Silva, Sara Hermann, Darius Himes, Iatã Cannabrava, Sergio Mah, Cassiano Elek Machado, Marta Dahó, Maria Wills, Luis Weinstein y Ricardo Viera..tengo una deuda impagable con sus aportes en las distintas etapas de este proyecto.

Como una anécdota de esta etapa, recuerdo un comentario de Marcos López cuando quería yo profundizar sobre el simbolismo religioso en el proyecto, pero al mismo tiempo era crítico del mismo. "Deja el rollo culposo y preocupate por sentir"...esas palabras fueron liberadoras y tienen mucho que ver con la propuesta final de esta exposición. El resultado es un trabajo más poético abierto a distintas lecturas sobre lo que se dice y lo que no se dice. He realizado una selección de manera que el espectador tenga una experiencia más orgánica, menos procesada que le permita ordenar su propia historia o desordenar la mía, al tiempo en que se relaciona con el mar y algunos de sus actores.

Trato de no definir mucho para evitar etiquetas, pero creo que vale la pena señalar los conceptos de persistencia como valor (los pescadores son para mí como Sísifo, pero de hecho concretan su misión) y transformación (el pez se antropomorfiza por momentos para comunicarse o viceversa, el hombre se convierte en pez para sensibilizarse).

Agradezco los buenos deseos y las palabras de Graciela Iturbide, así como el escrito de Mayra A. Johnson Depratt y el espectacular escrito curatorial de Luis Reynaldo Pérez, poeta exquisito y un amigo con quien colaboro desde hace un tiempo y quien es uno de los productos más recientes de la iniciativa "Curando Caribe" del Centro León. Agradezco también a Kutty Reyes, por su ayuda constante en mi formación artística, y sus palabras de apoyo; a Giovanna Menicucci de Rodriguez por ser mi todo, no puedo decirlo de otra forma; al Centro de la Imagen que es el punto donde confluyen todas estas personas. TODAS de alguna manera u otra tienen al Centro de la Imagen como punto común: Graciela Iturbide, Ricardo Viera y Juan Antonio Molina, los Visionados de PHotoESPAÑA Transatlántica y muchas otras iniciativas aparte de las que tienen que ver con esta expo!; a todos los amigos y alumnos que vivieron la evolución de estas imágenes; al duende Freddy Ginebra y a Casa de Teatro por abrirme siempre las puertas, y finalmente al inquieto Herminio Alberti León, productor de esta exposición quien con su energía, entusiasmo y eficacia ha hecho que esta sea una realidad.

Start day zero ...

It is almost time for me to present my exposition "Let there be fish" and I would like to share some thoughts about it.A few years ago, my dear friend Mario Arvelo named this photo with the name "Fiat Pisces" or " Let there be fish ". For me it was a wonderful initiative, I assumed the name for a series of photos I had been taking several years ago, but more steadily and organized ten years ago. It began as a concern to document this activity so basic, extemporaneous, which in my opinion would disappear soon, and then when I assumed it as a project I wanted to be more dilated, then influenced by the work of Graciela Iturbide, Flor Garduño, Mario Cravo Neto, Jozef Koudelka and Domingo Batista among other photographers that I admire. For Master Batista I must make a special mention, first because i consider him my photographic mentor and also because his work "Domingo Batista - INFRARROJO" was more than influence, food of the soul.As the imaginary of the project arose everything was taking shape. I presented it in several portfolio reviews, and all of them gave me some interesting idea or, on the whole, dissuaded me from continuing along paths that reviewers understood would lead nowhere. Juan Antonio Molina Cuesta, Willy Castellanos, Yolanda Andrade, Marcos Lopez, Fer Figheras, Maria Del Carmen Silva, Sara Hermann, Darius Himes, Iatã Cannabrava, Sergio Mah, Cassiano Elek Machado, Marta Dahó, Maria Wills, Luis Weinstein and Ricardo Viera. .I have an unpayable debt with their contributions in the different stages of this project.As an anecdote of this stage, I remember a comment from Marcos Lopez when I wanted to delve into religious symbolism in the project, but at the same time I was critical of it. "Leave the guilty roll alone and worry about feeling" ... those words were liberating and have much to do with the final, more poetic proposal of this exhibition. The result is a work open to different readings about what is said and what is not said. I have made a selection so that the viewer has a more organic, less processed experience that allows him to order his own story or to mess up mine, at the same time that he relates to the sea and some of his actors.I try not to define too much to avoid labels, but I think it is worth pointing out the concepts of persistence as value (the fishermen are for me like Sisyphus, but in fact they fulfill their mission) and transformation (the fish is anthropomorphized at times to communicate or vice versa, man becomes fish to sensitize himself).I am grateful for the good wishes and words of Graciela Iturbide, as well as the writing of Mayra A. Johnson Depratt and the spectacular curatorial writing of Luis Reynaldo Pérez, an exquisite poet and a friend with whom I have collaborated for some time and who is one of the most recent products of the "Curando Caribe" initiative of the Leon Center.I also thank Kutty Reyes, for his constant help in my artistic training, and his words of support; to Giovanna Menicucci de Rodriguez for being my everything, I couldn't say it any other way; to the Center of the Image that is the point where all these people converge.
