Juan Jorge Selman (1956) es arquitecto, diseñador de interiores y un apasionado de la fotografía desde temprana edad. Sus primeras incursiones en la creación fotográfica remontan a su adolescencia, estimulado por la afición de su hermano Abraham, quien le regalaría a sus 14 años una Nikkormat, la cámara de 35mm, con la cual trabajaría durante un buen tiempo. Fue también su mentor, dejándole como legado las nociones sobre el uso y funcionamiento del diafragma conjugado con la velocidad de la exposición de la imagen. Bajo esos estímulos, Jorge se dispuso a plasmar imágenes de su entorno y las vivencias cotidianas, logrando experimentar con la luz y el momento mágico en que penetra en el objeto y lo transforma. Fue el suyo un proceso de formación autodidacta que, en sus propias palabras, concibió “a través de pruebas y errores…de libros y revista que satisfacían mis conocimientos”. De ese tiempo conserva recuerdos entrañables y momentos compartidos con personajes claves, como el maestro dominicano Thimo Pimentel, que fueron decisivos en el desarrollo de su perfil profesional y pasión por la fotografía. Recuerda Jorgito -como le llaman familiares y amigos- que a mediados de la década de los sesenta, cuando iniciaban las carreras de autos en la Base Aérea de San Isidro, Pimentel (a la sazón encargado del registro de los fotógrafos de prensa de dicha actividad), le concedió una acreditación que influiría positivamente en su acercamiento a otras áreas de la fotografía al tiempo que reafirmaría su inclinación hacia la fotografía. Al paso del tiempo, la práctica fotográfica de Jorge Selman fue transformándose en una forma de pensar, expresarse y comunicar a través del lente. Su llamado a la fotografía ya estaba definido cuando en venideros participa en diversas exposiciones colectivas y se realiza como profesional de la fotografía al ser comisionado por agencias de publicidad, personas particulares y es invitado para diversas publicaciones. Hoy día, la fotografía arquitectónica, corporativa, de viajes y de la naturaleza identifican a Jorge Selman y su interés por recorrer la geografía nacional le han llevado a plasmar en sus fotografías la belleza y lo exótico de los paisajes dominicanos. Asimismo, sus viajes al exterior han sido un componente fundamental para la inspiración siempre relacionados con los ambientes que le más le atraen. Para Selman, la fotografía vive cuando se conjugan la luz, las circunstancias y el objetivo, transmutándose en una imagen que refleja lo vivido y lo captado. “La visión de transmitir lo que nuestros sentidos captan y lo conmueven es el principal motivo de divisar ese momento en que se plasma una imagen. Es el sentido de ver nuestro ambiente en ese momento, de descubrir y expresar lo que siente cuando se describe con imágenes a través de luz y sombra en un plano bidimensional”. Su exposición “Pasajes de Luz” en Galería Arte San Ramón lo afirma como un artista multidimensional, arquitecto de gran sensibilidad y un creador con sello propio en la práctica fotográfica.

Juan Jorge Selman (1956) is an architect, interior designer and a passionate photographer from an early age. His first forays into photographic creation go back to his adolescence, stimulated by the love of his brother Abraham, who would give him at age 14 a Nikkormat, the 35mm camera, with which he would work for a long time. It was also his mentor, leaving him as legacy the notions on the use and operation of the diaphragm conjugated with the speed of the exposure of the image. Under these stimuli, Jorge set out to capture images of his surroundings and everyday experiences, managing to experiment with light and the magic moment when he penetrates the object and transforms it. It was a process of self-taught formation that, in his own words, conceived "through trials and errors ... of books and magazine that satisfied my knowledge." From that time he retains close memories and moments shared with key figures such as the Dominican master Thimo Pimentel, who were decisive in the development of his professional profile and passion for photography. Jorgito recalls - as family and friends call him - that in the mid-1960s, when car races began at San Isidro Air Force Base, Pimentel (then in charge of registering press photographers for that activity ), granted him an accreditation that would positively influence his approach to other areas of photography while reaffirming his penchant for photography. Over time, the photographic practice of Jorge Selman was transformed into a way of thinking, expressing and communicating through the lens. His call to photography was already defined when in future he participates in various collective exhibitions and he is a photography professional when commissioned by advertising agencies, private individuals and is invited to various publications. Today, architectural, corporate, travel and nature photography identify Jorge Selman and his interest in exploring the national geography have led him to capture in his photographs the beauty and the exotic of the Dominican landscapes. Also, his trips abroad have been a fundamental component for inspiration always related to the environments that appeal to him most. For Selman, photography lives when the light, the circumstances and the objective are combined, transmuting in an image that reflects the lived and captured. "The vision to transmit what our senses capture and touch is the main reason to see that moment in which an image is captured. It is the sense of seeing our environment at that moment, of discovering and expressing what it feels like when it is described with images through light and shadow on a two-dimensional plane. " His exhibition "Passages of Light" in Galería Arte San Ramón affirms him as a multi-dimensional artist, architect of great sensitivity and a creator with his own stamp in photographic practice.
