Tengan todos y cada uno de ustedes la más cálida de las bienvenidas a la vigésimo séptima edición de este Concurso, principio de todo lo que somos como Fundación León Jimenes y como Centro León.
Hoy respiro y miro juventud por todos lados, y en estos tiempos eso no es poca cosa. Si es verdad aquello de que las artes suelen ser esas ventanas que se abren para que la luz universal y el aire trascendente entren en cada comunidad, aleteando con su zumbido el andar de las ideas, el movimiento giratorio de la tierra, el caminar de los espíritus, el crisol de las épocas, eventos como este Concurso tienen una misión sagrada en la historia de cada sociedad. Y eso es suficiente, creo, para llenarnos de júbilo y compromiso cada vez que pensamos y trabajamos para que días como este lleguen.
Estar aquí significa para la Fundación León Jimenes y para el Centro León, no solo una reiteración permanente de nuestros valores fundadores, sino también, y yo diría sobre todo: una oxigenación vital a todos nuestros esfuerzos y razón de ser como trabajadores de la cultura.
Desde 1964, fecha de la primera edición del evento, una foto icónica de Paul Giudicelli recibiendo el certificado de premiación de mi tío Eduardo León Asensio, le ponía rostro a toda una generación de artistas que jugarían un rol fundamental en las artes nacionales, una cohorte histórica que protagonizaría por décadas el arte moderno en República Dominicana. Hoy, la juventud como ímpetus de la diversidad y actitud ante la vida, no ha faltado a la cita. Y para ser más precisa, me voy a remitir a unos cuántos números:
Para este concurso, se inscribieron 256 artistas, provenientes de 17 de las 32 provincias del país y una representación significativa de dominicanos residiendo en el exterior. Más de ocho nacionalidades estuvieron presentes en el certamen, provenientes de artistas residentes en nuestro país. 55% de los participantes son menores de 35 años, y uno de cada cinco tiene menos de 45 años.
En cuanto a los 19 artistas seleccionados, 10 son mujeres; del total de finalistas, 9 provienen de la diáspora dominicana, y 8 tienen menos de 40 años. Esto nos dice mucho. Primero nos habla de la confianza que tienen los jóvenes artistas en un Concurso de más de 50 años de existencia.
También estas cifras nos hablan de cómo las artes pueden lograr lo que se le hace un poco difícil al mundo de hoy alcanzar: cohesión y representación. Sin dudas, la desigualdad social, y la inequidad que la fomenta, está erosionando las bases del indispensable vínculo humano que como sociedad debiera definirnos en cada momento. Pero para conquistar esa meta de todos los días, deben existir los canales institucionales y la conciencia y saber del liderazgo de sus responsabilidades ante ese objetivo.
Desde la Fundación León Jimenes, la emisora Raíces, y este Centro León, consideramos las artes como un medio de comunicación para encontrarnos, como un mecanismo de volver a cierta fraternidad a partir de la apertura de oportunidades reales y equitativas de convivencia para todos. Ese es el tipo de poder que tienen las artes y este concurso toma en cuenta de manera legítima esos factores democráticos como componentes esenciales en cualquier evento de esta naturaleza.
Debo destacar que por segunda vez consecutiva, contamos en este 27 Concurso con la Dimensión Caribe, espacio dedicado al desarrollo de una obra de un artista del Caribe que se realiza en las tres semanas previas al Concurso y que, en esta oportunidad, está a cargo de la artista Guadalupeña Minia Biabiany, quien nos acompaña gracias a las relaciones de colaboración con el Museo Memorial Acte y la Embajada de Francia en Santo Domingo.
Tenemos la profunda convicción, que la idea inicial de 1964 se fortalece cada vez más, a través de la renovación de las bases, las cuales buscamos en cada ocasión poner más cerca del momento histórico que rodea cada edición. Queremos un concurso más dinámico, más caribeño, más cerca de la gente, y creo no equivocarme si digo que lo vamos logrando, gracias al esfuerzo de muchas personas.
En primer lugar, a nuestro reconocido jurado integrado por: la dominicana Carmen Ramos, el guatemalteco Emiliano Valdés y el venezolano José Luis Blondet, su inteligencia y ardua labor hicieron posible este día y reiterar la tradición de rigor y asertividad del evento. Nuestro reconocimiento y gratitud sincera.
Para la Cervecería Nacional Dominicana, por el apoyo brindado de manera constante a todas estas iniciativas a lo largo de las pasadas ediciones.
Al equipo curatorial, de investigación y de organización del evento, mi admiración por hacer de este concurso uno de los más pedagógicos y estructurados de los últimos años.
El ámbito educativo tiene como tarea fundamental plantear el museo como espacio plural y abierto para una continua construcción de significados. En este sentido, las producciones artísticas contemporáneas dan lugar a la participación y a incertidumbres más que a certezas, generando oportunidades para que los públicos establezcan conexiones y construyan su propio conocimiento.
Se trata de favorecer con los públicos una práctica educativa constructiva, en la que se establecen espacios de conversación, colaboración y vinculación para desarrollar aprendizajes significativos y contribuir al fortalecimiento de determinadas competencias comunicativas y de pensamiento lógico, creativo y crítico. Así, la exposición integra un espacio creativo con su propuesta de ejercicios, un área de lectura e investigación en Mediateca y guías didácticas para conocer el concurso y, con él, algo más de las artes visuales dominicanas.
Y por supuesto debo agradecer a nuestros artistas, razón de ser institucional de cada uno de nosotros, nuestro más profundo agradecimiento por continuar trabajando y motivando nuestros días. Con sus trabajos, expuestos en esta esmerada sala de exposiciones, ustedes le están entregando al colectivo nacional dominicano y a quienes nos visiten, una asombrosa muestra de creatividad e imaginación.
Solo espero que estos esfuerzos sean cada vez más en provecho no solo de la comunidad de artistas, sino también del fomento que necesitamos para construir en permanencia una mejor nación. Que disfrutemos de esta noche. Que el maravillarnos sea nuestra recompensa, que la felicidad se constituya en sentimiento fértil, y que la reflexión nos convide a la trascendencia, para que al concluir esta noche podamos salir impregnados de inspiración y así contagiar inspirando.

The triumph of culture, art, spirit, was held yesterday in Santiago, RD. At the opening ceremony of the 27th Eduardo León Jimenes Arts Contest, with the wonderful words of Mrs. María Amalia León, director of this Foundation.
Goodnight: Have each and every one of you the warmest of welcomes to the twenty-seventh edition of this Contest, the beginning of all that we are as León Jimenes Foundation and as Leon Center. Today I breathe and look youth everywhere, and in these times that is no small thing. If it is true that the arts are usually those windows that open so that the universal light and the transcendent air enter each community, fluttering with their buzz the walk of ideas, the revolving movement of the earth, the walk of the Spirits, the crucible of the ages, events like this Contest have a sacred mission in the history of each society. And that is enough, I think, to fill us with joy and commitment every time we think and work so that days like this arrive. Being here means for the Leon Jimenes Foundation and for the León Center, not only a permanent reiteration of our founding values, but also, and I would say above all: a vital oxygenation to all our efforts and raison d'être as culture workers. Since 1964, the date of the first edition of the event, an iconic photo of Paul Giudicelli receiving the award certificate from my uncle Eduardo León Asensio, put face to a generation of artists who would play a fundamental role in the national arts, a cohort historical that would star for decades modern art in the Dominican Republic. Today, youth as an impetus of diversity and attitude towards life, has not missed the appointment. And to be more precise, I'm going to refer to a few numbers: For this contest, 256 artists were registered, from 17 of the 32 provinces of the country and a significant representation of Dominicans residing abroad. More than eight nationalities were present at the event, from artists resident in our country. 55% of the participants are under 35 years old, and one in five is under 45 years old. As for the 19 selected artists, 10 are women; of the total number of finalists, 9 come from the Dominican diaspora, and 8 are less than 40 years old. This tells us a lot. First, he talks about the trust that young artists have in a contest that has been in existence for more than 50 years. These figures also tell us how the arts can achieve what is difficult for the world today to achieve: cohesion and representation. Undoubtedly, social inequality, and the inequality that fosters it, is eroding the foundations of the indispensable human link that as a society should define us at every moment. But to achieve that goal every day, there must be institutional channels and awareness and knowledge of the leadership of their responsibilities towards that goal. From the León Jimenes Foundation, the Raíces radio station, and this Leon Center, we consider the arts as a means of communication to meet, as a mechanism to return to a certain fraternity from the opening of real and equitable opportunities for coexistence for all. That is the kind of power that the arts have and this contest legitimately takes into account these democratic factors as essential components in any event of this nature. I must emphasize that for the second consecutive time, we have in this 27 Contest with the Caribbean Dimension, a space dedicated to the development of a work by a Caribbean artist that is carried out in the three weeks prior to the Contest and that, in this opportunity, is in charge by the Guadeloupean artist Minia Biabiany, who accompanies us thanks to collaborative relations with the Acte Memorial Museum and the French Embassy in Santo Domingo. We have the deep conviction that the initial idea of 1964 is strengthened more and more, through the renewal of the bases, which we seek on each occasion to put closer to the historical moment surrounding each edition. We want a more dynamic, more Caribbean contest, closer to the people, and I believe I am not wrong if I say that we are achieving it, thanks to the efforts of many people. In the first place, our recognized jury composed of: the Dominican Carmen Ramos, the Guatemalan Emiliano Valdés and the Venezuelan José Luis Blondet, their intelligence and hard work made this day possible and reiterate the tradition of rigor and assertiveness of the event. Our sincere recognition and gratitude. For the Dominican National Brewery, for the support provided in a constant manner to all these initiatives throughout the past editions. To the curatorial, research and organization team of the event, my admiration for making this contest one of the most pedagogical and structured in recent years. The educational area has as its fundamental task to pose the museum as a spaceio plural and open for a continuous construction of meanings. In this sense, contemporary artistic productions give rise to participation and uncertainties rather than certainties, generating opportunities for the public to establish connections and build their own knowledge.
The aim is to favor a constructive educational practice with the public, in which spaces of conversation, collaboration and connection are established to develop meaningful learning and contribute to the strengthening of certain communicative competences and logical, creative and critical thinking. Thus, the exhibition integrates a creative space with its proposal of exercises, an area of reading and research in Mediateca and didactic guides to know the contest and, with it, something more of the Dominican visual arts. And of course I must thank our artists, the institutional reason for each one of us, our deepest gratitude for continuing to work and motivating our days. With your work, exhibited in this painstaking exhibition hall, you are delivering to the Dominican national collective and to those who visit us, an amazing display of creativity and imagination. I only hope that these efforts are increasingly in the interest not only of the community of artists, but also of the encouragement we need to permanently build a better nation. That we enjoy tonight. May the wonder be our reward, that happiness becomes a fertile feeling, and that the reflection convide us to the transcendence, so that at the end of this night we can leave impregnated with inspiration and thus infect inspiring.
