Sra. Laurie Cumbo, Comisionada del Departamento de Asuntos Culturales de la Ciudad de Nueva York y el Sr. Jay Levenson, Director del Programa Internacional desde 1996 en el MoMA
La cultura es un factor fundamental en la sociedad, ya que nos permite conocer, comprender y valorar las expresiones artísticas de diferentes sociedades. Reunir oficiales del arte como lo es, la Sra. Laurie Cumbo, Comisionada del Departamento de Asuntos Culturales de la Ciudad de Nueva York y al Sr. Jay Levenson, Director del Programa Internacional desde 1996 en el MoMA, es oportunidad unica cultural para la República Dominicana por enriquecer nuestro acervo creativo-cultural, al tiempo de sumarle al proyecto “Iván Tovar, Retrospectivo". Con los auspicios de la Fundación Iván Tovar y la representación oficial del Ministerio de Cultura en la presencia del viceministro de Patrimonio Cultural, el Sr. Gamal Michelén, viceministro de Patrimonio Cultural, y con la determinante gestión del mecenas de artes Héctor José Rizek Sued, Yuri Ruiz Villalona y Daniela Tovar, Presidenta de esta fundación de arte.
La idea de organizar una reunión en el restaurante Cappuccino de nuestra ciudad para colaborar con estas dos culturas es muy interesante en su intención y culturalmente noble en sus propósitos. Las artes es un lenguaje universal que puede unir a las personas, entidades internacionales, sin importar su origen o nacionalidad. Por demás, el hecho de tener a estos distinguidos representantes de la cultura estadounidense en este almuerzo potenciaría un intercambio cultural brillante –por su luz– para un futuro que le sumaría a nuestras políticas culturales mucha trascendencias.

Laurie Cumbo
Es una política estadounidense que actualmente se desempeña como Comisionada del Departamento de Asuntos Culturales de la Ciudad de Nueva York desde el 18 de marzo de 2022. Anteriormente, ocupó el cargo de Líder Mayoritario del Concejo Municipal de la Ciudad de Nueva York desde el 11 de enero de 2018 hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2021.
Cumbo también fue miembro del Concejo Municipal de la Ciudad de Nueva York por el Distrito 35 desde el 1 de enero de 2014 hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2021. Durante su mandato político, estuvo involucrada en diversas controversias y desempeñó un papel importante en el gobierno local de la ciudad.
Además de su carrera política, Cumbo ha estado activa en el ámbito cultural y ha trabajado para promover y apoyar las artes y la cultura en la ciudad de Nueva York. Su nombramiento como Comisionada del Departamento de Asuntos Culturales refleja su compromiso con este campo.
Laurie Cumbo ha dejado una marca significativa en la política de la ciudad de Nueva York y continúa siendo una figura influyente en la esfera cultural.
Laurie Cumbo es licenciada en Estudios Africanos y de la Diáspora por la Universidad de Cornell. Además, obtuvo una maestría en Arte Africano y Afroamericano en la Universidad de la Ciudad de Nueva York.
En cuanto a su trayectoria, además de su trabajo como concejala de la ciudad de Nueva York, Laurie Cumbo ha estado involucrada en diversas actividades y roles. Antes de ingresar a la política, trabajó como directora ejecutiva del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Brooklyn (MoCADA, por sus siglas en inglés), donde se dedicó a promover el arte y la cultura africana y afroamericana.
Cumbo también ha sido profesora adjunta en el Departamento de Estudios Africano-Americanos de la Universidad de Brooklyn y ha participado en varias organizaciones y comités comunitarios en Brooklyn.
Jay Levenson
Jay Levenson se ha desempeñado como Director del Programa Internacional desde 1996 en el MoMA, gestionando una variedad de iniciativas, incluyendo Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives (C-MAP), el proyecto de investigación global del museo. Antes de eso, fue Subdirector de Administración de Programas en el Museo Solomon R. Guggenheim, en Nueva York. Ha sido curador invitado para importantes exposiciones en la Galería Nacional de Arte y el Museo Nacional de Arte Asiático de la Institución Smithsonian. Graduado del Colegio Yale y de la Facultad de Derecho Yale, y con un doctorado en historia del arte otorgado por el Instituto de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Nueva York, ha ocupado cargos tanto como curador y administrador de museos, así como abogado.

Culture is a fundamental factor in society, since it allows us to know, understand and value the artistic expressions of different societies. Bringing together art officials such as Ms. Laurie Cumbo, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and Mr. Jay Levenson, Director of the International Program since 1996 at MoMA, is a unique cultural opportunity for the Republic Dominican for enriching our creative-cultural heritage, while adding to the project "Iván Tovar, Retrospective". With the auspices of the Iván Tovar Foundation and the official representation of the Ministry of Culture in the presence of the Vice Minister of Cultural Heritage, Mr. Gamal Michelén, Vice Minister of Cultural Heritage, and with the decisive management of the arts patron Héctor José Rizek Sued, Yuri Ruiz Villalona and Daniela Tovar, President of this art foundation.
The idea of organizing a meeting in the Cappuccino restaurant in our city to collaborate with these two cultures is very interesting in its intention and culturally noble in its purposes. The arts is a universal language that can unite people, international entities, regardless of their origin or nationality. Furthermore, the fact of having these distinguished representatives of American culture at this luncheon would promote a brilliant cultural exchange –because of its light– for a future that would add much significance to our cultural policies.

Laurie Cumbo
She is an American politician who is currently serving as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs since March 18, 2022. Previously, she served as Majority Leader of the New York City City Council since March 11, 2022. January 2018 until December 31, 2021.
Cumbo was also a member of the New York City Council for the 35th District from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2021. During her political tenure, she was involved in various controversies and played an important role in the local city government.
In addition to her political career, Ella Cumbo has been active in the cultural arena and has worked to promote and support arts and culture in New York City. Her appointment as Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs reflects her commitment to this field.
Laurie Cumbo has left a significant mark on New York City politics and continues to be an influential figure in the cultural sphere.
Laurie Cumbo has a BA in African and Diaspora Studies from Cornell University. In addition, she earned a master's degree in African and African American Art from the City University of New York.
Regarding her trajectory, in addition to her work as a New York City Councilor, Laurie Cumbo has been involved in various activities and roles. Before entering politics, she worked as executive director of the Brooklyn Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCADA), where she was dedicated to promoting African and African-American art and culture.
Ella cumbo has also been an adjunct professor in the Department of African American Studies at Brooklyn University and has been involved in various organizations and community committees in Brooklyn.
Jay Levenson
Jay Levenson has served as Director of the International Program at MoMA since 1996, managing a variety of initiatives, including Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives (C-MAP), the museum's global research project. Prior to that, he was Assistant Director for Program Management at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. He has been a guest curator for major exhibitions at the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Asian Art. A graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School, with a Ph.D. in art history from New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, he has held positions as both a museum curator and administrator, as well as a lawyer.
