La nueva fundación cultural Kulturstiftung Basel H.Geiger (KBH.G) abre su espacio de exposición permanente en Basilea, Suiza, con esta muestra colectiva comisariada por Gina Jiménez Suriel y Pablo Guardiola en coordinación con la Iniciativa de Arte del Caribe .
Esta primera exposición en KBH.G presenta a 11 artistas de todo el Caribe y su diáspora cultural, y ha sido coproducida con Caribbean Art Initiative (CAI), una organización sin fines de lucro con sede en Basilea que promueve el arte y la cultura caribeña en todo el mundo. El equipo curatorial de esta exposición fue seleccionado en un proceso de convocatoria abierta. La participación se limitó a curadores nacidos o residentes en el Caribe que trabajan activamente con artistas caribeños. La exposición, la primera de su tipo en Suiza, les permite compartir su visión de la región con un público más amplio y presentar este complejo y rico paisaje artístico a una nueva audiencia.
Jiménez Suriel y Guardiola utilizaron el Tratado de Basilea de 1795 como punto de partida para la exposición y enfatizaron la conexión histórica entre la ciudad de Basilea y el Caribe. El Tratado de Basilea de 1795 marcó el final formal de la guerra de dos años entre la Primera República francesa y la monarquía española. Define la redistribución de diferentes regiones y se firmó en el territorio neutral de Basilea. Es uno de los numerosos ejemplos de redistribución del territorio colonial caribeño que no tuvieron en cuenta los pueblos involucrados y directamente afectados. A partir de Édouard Glissant y Kamau Brathwaite, que utilizaron el término Créolité, Jiménez Suriel y Guardiola reúnen a artistas que rompen con las expectativas culturales impuestas. Estos artistas exploran ideas de una identidad caribeña compartida en un contexto histórico de tratados internacionales, división política y transferencias de poder. Las obras de la exposición responden a los desafíos políticos y geográficos contemporáneos del Caribe y a las realidades personales de los artistas. From August 27 to November 15, 2020. The new cultural foundation Kulturstiftung Basel H.Geiger (KBH.G) opens its permanent exhibition space in Basel, Switzerland, with this collective exhibition curated by Gina Jiménez Suriel and Pablo Guardiola in coordination with the Caribbean Art Initiative.
This first exhibition at KBH.G features 11 artists from across the Caribbean and its cultural diaspora, and has been co-produced with the Caribbean Art Initiative (CAI), a Basel-based non-profit organization promoting Caribbean art and culture. Worldwide.
The curatorial team for this exhibition was selected in an open call process. Participation was limited to Caribbean-born or resident curators who actively work with Caribbean artists. The exhibition, the first of its kind in Switzerland, allows them to share their vision of the region with a wider audience and present this complex and rich artistic landscape to a new audience.
Jiménez Suriel and Guardiola used the 1795 Treaty of Basel as a starting point for the exhibition and emphasized the historical connection between the city of Basel and the Caribbean. The 1795 Treaty of Basel marked the formal end of the two-year war between the First French Republic and the Spanish monarchy. It defines the redistribution of different regions and was signed in the neutral territory of Basel. It is one of the numerous examples of the redistribution of the Caribbean colonial territory that the peoples involved and directly affected did not take into account. Starting with Édouard Glissant and Kamau Brathwaite, who used the term Créolité, Jiménez Suriel and Guardiola bring together artists who break with imposed cultural expectations.
These artists explore ideas of a shared Caribbean identity in a historical context of international treaties, political division, and transfers of power. The works in the exhibition respond to the contemporary political and geographical challenges of the Caribbean and the personal realities of the artists.
