La Galería de Arte Arawak se siente honrada de poder presentar una selecta exhibición de dibujos del internacionalmente reconocido artista Vicente Pimentel, una de las figuras trascendentales de la historia del arte moderno y contemporáneo de República Dominicana.
La muestra consta de once dibujos realizados en diversos formatos y técnicas y provenientes de una importante colección privada donde han permanecidos hasta el momento y por primera vez serán exhibidos y ofrecidos a la venta al público.
Mildred Canahuate, directora de la Galería de Arte Arawak, expreso el placer de poder compartir con el público dominicano estas obras de este extraordinario artista. “Es un verdadero privilegio tener la oportunidad de apreciar estos dibujos de Vicente de su etapa figurativa, donde el artista construyó una expresiva poética a partir del estudio anatómico del espíritu humano”.
TRAYECTORIA Y PREMIOS
De una laureada trayectoria, Vicente Pimentel nació en Santo Domingo en 1947 y realizó sus estudios en la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes en Santo Domingo entre 1963 y 1968, siendo un alumno aventajado del maestro Jaime Colson, luego se trasladó a Marsella, Francia en 1972 para iniciar estudios en la Ecole d’Art et Architecture.
En 1974 regresa a Santo Domingo y dedica gran parte de su tiempo como profesor de la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes y de la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo; en 1976 se traslada de nuevo a París, Francia donde reside desde entonces.
Su trabajo ha sido expuesto en diversas capitales del mundo: París, Estocolmo, Santo Domingo, Madrid, Islas Canarias, Londres, La Habana, Rijeka (Yugoslavia), Niza, Copenhague, así como en importantes ferias de arte, entre ellas, FIAC, Feria Internacional de Arte de París y Feria Internacional de Arte de Estocolmo.
Ha sido premiado en cuatro ocasiones en el Concurso de Arte Eduardo León Jimenes, 1966, 1968, 1969 y 1970; en 1981 ganó Premio en Dibujo en la XV Bienal de Artes Plásticas en Santo Domingo y en 1982 el Premio "Ville de Vírtry" en Francia.
En el año 2020 fue reconocido, junto con otros tres notables artistas dominicanos, con el PREMIO NACIONAL A LAS ARTES VISUALES, el reconocimiento más alto que otorga el Estado dominicano a los aportes de un artista nacional de la plástica por su talento creativo y originalidad.
OBRA
Vicente Pimentel es un artista de gran madurez que ha dedicado gran parte de su ejercicio plástico al dibujo obteniendo la excelencia artística en este importante medio. La producción del periodo comprendido en la década de los ’60 y ’70 presentada en esta exposición, se caracteriza por un dibujo espontáneo de carácter monocromático donde prevalece la figura humana: desnudos, retratos, mulatas y parejas, entre otras, ejecutados magistralmente con gran fuerza gestual y dinamismo de la línea; transparencias y manchas son ejecutadas con gran maestría, utilizando diversos medios mixtos, tinta y carboncillo sobre soporte de papel que reflejan las angustias y tormentos del ser humano.

The Arawak Art Gallery is honored to present a select exhibition of drawings by internationally renowned artist Vicente Pimentel, one of the transcendental figures in the history of modern and contemporary art in the Dominican Republic.
The sample consists of eleven drawings made in various formats and techniques and from an important private collection where they have remained until now and for the first time will be exhibited and offered for sale to the public.
Mildred Canahuate, director of the Arawak Art Gallery, expressed the pleasure of being able to share with the Dominican public these works of this extraordinary artist. TRACK AND AWARDS
From an award-winning career, Vicente Pimentel was born in Santo Domingo in 1947 and studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Santo Domingo between 1963 and 1968, being an outstanding student of the teacher Jaime Colson, then he moved to Marseille, France in 1972 to start studies at the Ecole d'Art et Architecture.
In 1974 he returned to Santo Domingo and dedicated a large part of his time as a professor at the National School of Fine Arts and the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo; in 1976 he moved back to Paris, France where he has resided ever since.
His work has been exhibited in various capitals of the world: Paris, Stockholm, Santo Domingo, Madrid, Canary Islands, London, Havana, Rijeka (Yugoslavia), Nice, Copenhagen, as well as in important art fairs, among them, FIAC, Paris International Art Fair and Stockholm International Art Fair.
He has been awarded four times in the Eduardo León Jimenes Art Contest, 1966, 1968, 1969 and 1970; in 1981 he won the Prize in Drawing at the XV Biennial of Plastic Arts in Santo Domingo and in 1982 the "Ville de Vírtry" Prize in France.
In 2020 he was recognized, along with three other notable Dominican artists, with the NATIONAL PRIZE FOR VISUAL ARTS, the highest recognition granted by the Dominican State to the contributions of a national plastic artist for his creative talent and originality.
CONSTRUCTION SITE
Vicente Pimentel is an artist of great maturity who has devoted much of his artistic practice to drawing, obtaining artistic excellence in this important medium. The production of the period comprised in the '60s and' 70s presented in this exhibition is characterized by a spontaneous monochrome drawing where the human figure prevails: nudes, portraits, mulatto women and couples, among others, masterfully executed with great gestural strength and dynamism of the line; Transparencies and stains are executed with great skill, using various mixed media, ink and charcoal on paper that reflect the anguish and torment of the human being.
