Un retrato de Fátima, una yemení madre de nueve hijos, completamente velada en un hijab mientras arroja una red de pesca a las aguas, le ha valido al fotoperiodista argentino Pablo Tosco el primer premio en la categoría de temas contemporáneos de los World Press Photo Awards, que fueron anunciados hoy.
La imagen fue tomada el 12 de febrero de 2020 a bordo del pequeño barco de Fátima y en medio del conflicto en curso entre los rebeldes musulmanes chiítas hutíes y una coalición árabe sunita liderada por Arabia Saudita, que Unicef ha calificado de la mayor crisis humanitaria del mundo.
NayanTara Gurung Kakshapati, presidente del jurado del Concurso de fotografía 2021 y cofundador y director de photo.circle, calificó la imagen ganadora de Tosco como "una imagen poderosa de agencia y resistencia".
El segundo premio en la categoría de temas contemporáneos fue el retrato de Jérémy Lempin de Marion, una mujer francesa de 24 años que tiene cáncer metastásico, mientras abraza a su hijo Ethan de siete años. En el abrazo también participa Peyo, un caballo.
La imagen ganadora de Lempin proviene de un proyecto más amplio que explora la nueva práctica de la terapia asistida por animales, una forma pionera de cuidados paliativos que se puso a prueba en la Unidad de Cuidados Paliativos Séléne del Centre Hospitalier de Calais, Francia. La imagen fue tomada el 30 de noviembre de 2020. Peyo atiende a unos 20 pacientes cada mes, y los científicos ahora están estudiando su capacidad instintiva para detectar cánceres y tumores.
En tercer lugar está una imagen titulada Soldado en reposo del fotógrafo armenio Vaghinak Ghazaryan. Tomada el 31 de octubre de 2020, la imagen muestra a un soldado dormido en una trinchera, protegido de los elementos con una cubierta de plástico, en el lado noreste de Syunik durante los peores combates entre las fuerzas étnicas armenias y Azerbaiyán por el territorio en disputa de Nerkin Khndzoresk. desde la Primera Guerra de Nagorno-Karabaj a principios de la década de 1990. La imagen fue tomada en una película ambientada en las profundidades de Sakha, una república en el extremo noreste de la Federación de Rusia, conocida por sus condiciones climáticas extremas: las temperaturas pueden descender hasta menos 50 grados centígrados en invierno. El cine ha florecido en la región desde la década de 1990. Se filman alrededor de diez largometrajes al año, lo que le otorga a la industria el nombre de Sakhawood. The image was taken on 12 February 2020 aboard Fatima’s tiny boat and amidst the ongoing conflict between Houthi Shia Muslim rebels and a Sunni Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia which Unicef has termed the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. NayanTara Gurung Kakshapati, the 2021 Photo Contest jury chair and co-founder and director of photo.circle, called Tosco’s winning picture “a powerful image of agency and resilience.” Second prize in the contemporary issues category was Jérémy Lempin's portrait of Marion, a 24-year-old French woman who has metastatic cancer, as she embraces her seven-year-old son Ethan. Also involved in the embrace is Peyo, a horse. Lempin's winning image came from a wider project exploring the new practice of animal-assisted therapy, a pioneering form of palliative care piloted in the Séléne Palliative Care Unit at the Centre Hospitalier de Calais, France. Taken on on 31 October 2020, the image shows a soldier lying asleep in a trench, shielding from the elements with a plastic cover, on the northeastern side of Syunik during the worst fighting between ethnic Armenian forces and Azerbaijan over the disputed territory of Nerkin Khndzoresk since the First Nagorno-Karabakh War in the early 1990s. While it is a current image, one made of an ongoing conflict on the edges of the European continent, there is a classicism to the portrait, consciously echoing the historic portraits of trend warfare from the First World War and before. The image was taken on a film set in the depths of Sakha, a republic in the far northeast of the Russian Federation, one known for its extreme weather conditions: temperatures can drop as low as minus 50 celsius in winter. Cinema has flourished in the region since the 1990s. Around ten feature films are shot a year, affording the industry the name Sakhawood. In recent years, Sakha cinema has been represented in film festivals in Finland and South Korea, with the films picking up more and more awards. In total, 45 photographers from 28 countries were awarded by the Amsterdam-based World Press Photo.
