Como parte de una acción de mecenazgo cultural, la familia Báez-Tavárez, en las personas de los esposos coleccionistas de arte Fernando Báez Guerrero y Nancy Tavárez de Báez, el Museo de Arte Moderno, con el apoyo del Ministerio de Cultura y la Dirección General de Museos, presentará el jueves 16 de febrero del año en curso a las 7:30 de la noche, la exposición Almas Latentes/Artistas del exilio español y europeo en República Dominicana, integrada por connotados grabadores, dibujantes, pintores y escultores inmigrantes españoles y de otras naciones de Europa que se establecieron en el país desde el año 1939, en calidad de refugiados.

La comisión organizadora destacó que la expo-colectiva de artistas internacionales será presentada para conmemorar el 83 aniversario de la llegada al país de un selecto grupo de filósofos, periodistas, músicos, intelectuales y artistas plásticos con especialidades técnicas tan diversas, como pintura, escultura, muralismo, dibujo, cerámica, grabado y fotografía.
La familia Báez-Tavárez informó, junto a la Comisaría y el Curador de la exposición, que la presentación de esta exposición está dedicada al empresario, coleccionista y mecenas de origen español Don Juan José Bellapart (1930-2020), fundador del Museo Bellapart junto a su esposa doña Milagros Álvarez de Bellapart, reconociendo en él a un custodio protector del arte nacional, que le permitieron crear una institución museística de gran prestigio en el centro metropolitano de Santo Domingo, desde la que ha contribuido a la preservación del patrimonio cultural de República Dominicana. Labor continuada a la memoria de su padre por sus hijas Maribel y Maripily Bellapart Álvarez.
En la recepción de apertura, y hasta el mes de abril, tanto el público de Santo Domingo como el de otras ciudades del país, y los turistas que se interesan por la oferta cultural de República Dominicana, podrán disfrutar de la trayectoria, dominio técnicos, destrezas y profesionalidad de estos artistas, quienes consagraron sus vidas y oficios para servirle al sistema cultural dominicano, haciendo valiosos aportes a la formación del pensamiento estético y a la educación artística del país, incluyendo la creación de la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes en 1942; cuyo primer director fue el escultor español Manolo Pascual.
Esta exposición la integran decenas de obras atesoradas por la familia Báez-Tavárez durante décadas, en su generalidad adquiridas en subastas y gestiones internacionales, además de las compradas en el país; destacándose el cuerpo de piezas de trece artistas: Ángel Botello Barros (Pontevedra, España), George Hausdorf (Breslau, Alemania), Joan Junyer (Barcelona, España), Manolo Pascual (Bilbao, España), Alfonso Vila “Shum” (Lleida, España), Antonio Prats-Ventós (Barcelona, España), Ramón Prats-Ventós (Barcelona, España), José Gausachs Armengol (Barcelona, España), José Vela Zanetti (Burgos, España), Ernst Lothar (Müller, Viena), Joseph Fulop (Hungría, ), Eugenio Fernández Granell (La Coruña, España) y Mounia L. André (seudónimo artístico)/ Margot Loewe (Berlín, Alemania).
La muestra es coordinada y comisariada por la destacada galerista y gestora cultural Mildred Canahuate, con guión curatorial del crítico de arte Abil Peralta Agüero, enfatizando en la revelación de nuevas obras en la escena de la historia del arte dominicano.
La exposición, igual tiene como propósito el conocimiento y análisis de las obras a cargo de académicos, críticos de arte y curadores; haciendo hincapié en el libre acceso de estudiantes y profesores de academias especializadas y escuelas públicas y privadas; por lo que la muestra será museográfica con sentido educativo, siguiendo una línea de tiempo sustentada en documentos, textos y fotografías de apoyo museográfico con sentido histórico, estético, conceptual y dato gráfico.
La colección estará integrada por unas 130 obras de variados formatos, técnicas, fechas y estilos creados en el país y el exterior, destacándose, como parte del contenido de las mismas, la influencia que ejerció sobre el proceso creador de estos artistas la atmósfera tropicalista, energía y color del paisaje y tradiciones culturales de República Dominicana.
Fernando Báez Guerrero, reconocido mecenas y destacado coleccionista de numismática y filatelia, además de coleccionista de arte, expresó su satisfacción, la de su esposa, hijos y nietos, que el Museo de Arte Moderno acoge esta colección de obras de arte que su familia ha atesorado con pasión, valoración, respeto y amor por el arte nacional y los distintos períodos que conforman su rica historia. Báez Guerrero proviene de una reconocida familia de artistas, intelectuales y personalidades directamente vinculados al arte, la literatura y la cultura dominicana. Es nieto del pintor Tuto Báez (1895-1960), de amplio reconocimiento en la historia del arte nacional.
Mildred Canahuate, Comisaria del proyecto expositivo, anunció que como parte del propósito educativo de la exposición, el cual contempla un programa de apoyo a este nuevo encuentro con una auténtica expresión artística con raíces en la historia cultural del país, se presentará un panel y conferencias de alto perfil para el análisis de temas relacionados con la inmigración de artistas e intelectuales europeos en República Dominicana como consecuencia de la Guerra Civil Española y la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

The exhibition is coordinated and curated by the prominent gallery owner and cultural manager Mildred Canahuate, with a curatorial script by the art critic Abil Peralta Agüero, emphasizing the revelation of new works on the Dominican art history scene.

Fernando Báez Guerrero, renowned patron and prominent collector of numismatics and philately, as well as an art collector, expressed his satisfaction, that of his wife, children and grandchildren, that the Museum of Modern Art is hosting this collection of works of art that his family has treasured with passion, appreciation, respect and love for national art and the different periods that make up its rich history. Báez Guerrero comes from a renowned family of artists, intellectuals, and personalities directly linked to Dominican art, literature, and culture. He is the grandson of the painter Tuto Báez (1895-1960), widely recognized in the history of national art.
Mildred Canahuate, Commissioner of the exhibition project, announced that as part of the educational purpose of the exhibition, which includes a support program for this new encounter with an authentic artistic expression rooted in the country's cultural history, a panel and high-profile conferences will be presented for the analysis of issues related to the immigration of European artists and intellectuals in the Dominican Republic as a consequence of the Spanish Civil War and World War II.
