Con la apertura de la exhibición Un grito en la mano, del artista puertorriqueño Garvin Sierra. Un grito en la mano inaugura un calendario de actividades que incluye exhibiciones, un afiche conmemorativo y eventos especiales.
19 de octubre de 2022; San Juan, Puerto Rico – La celebración del trigésimo aniversario del Museo de Las Américas dará inicio mañana jueves, 20 de octubre, con la apertura de la exhibición Un grito en la mano, del artista puertorriqueño Garvin Sierra. Un grito en la mano inaugura un calendario de actividades que incluye exhibiciones, un afiche conmemorativo y eventos especiales.
“Queremos invitarles a acompañarnos en el inicio de la conmemoración de los treinta años del Museo de Las Américas con la apertura de la exhibición Un grito en la mano del artista Garvin Sierra que se llevará a cabo mañana (20 de octubre de 2022) desde las 6:00 p.m. En esta exhibición Sierra trata temas de actualidad con los que el público puede identificarse y, de cierto modo, conecta la historia que narran nuestras exhibiciones permanentes con lo que ha estado ocurriendo en Puerto Rico durante los últimos años. Les invitamos a acompañarnos y a unirse a las celebraciones que se estarán realizando a lo largo de un año”, comentó María Ángela López Vilella, directora ejecutiva del Museo de Las Américas.
Un grito en la mano de Garvin Sierra presentará sobre 200 carteles de su amplia producción artística, entre formato digital e impreso, que resume los temas de mayor discusión y debate en los medios de comunicación en los pasados años. El artista cuenta ya con una trayectoria como diseñador y escultor, grabador y en la exhibición se destaca por su labor como editor.
“En tiempos de avanzados manejos desde la tecnología virtual el arte de denuncia y protesta adquiere mayor capacidad de multiplicación desde las redes electrónicas. Su capacidad de despliegue es equivalente a una fuerza poderosa. La exhibición Un grito en la mano reconoce la clásica definición del cartel como un grito en la pared. En nuestros días la pared es la pantalla del móvil o de todo equipo que es receptor de la señal que emana desde un emisor conectado con el medio electrónico”, manifestó el curador Humberto Figueroa.
La exhibición también cuenta con escritos interpretativos del maestro Antonio Martorell y la escritora Ana Teresa Toro. Visitarla será una experiencia inmersiva dentro de la punzante creatividad del artista a través de instalaciones de pantallas y proyecciones que han sido posibles gracias al mecenazgo de la empresa puertorriqueña SunColors, proveedores especializados en impresiones y gráficas de gran formato. A la par con la exposición, estará transcurriendo una programación interpretativa que incluirá conversatorios, talleres y visitas guiadas.
Entre las actividades que se suman al calendario de celebraciones en el mes de octubre están la anticipada celebración de la Noche de Catrinas el 27 de octubre, desde las 6:00 p.m., con un altar de muertos titulado Amigos inolvidables del Museo y el Domingo Familiar “Un fiestón para Tufiño” que conmemora el centenario del Pintor del pueblo, el 30 de octubre desde las 11:00 a.m. con una programación que incluye taller creativo y recorrido con Garvin Sierra y Humberto Figueroa por la exhibición Un grito en la mano.
La programación pública del Trigésimo Aniversario del Museo de Las Américas es posible en parte gracias al apoyo de la Comisión Especial Conjunta de Donativos Legislativos para Impacto Comunitario, la Compañía de Turismo de Puerto Rico, el Fondo Flamboyán para las Artes, Joaquín y Olga Viso, el Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, la Fundación Ángel Ramos, la Fundación Puertorriqueña de las Humanidades, la National Endowment for theHumanities y el Municipio de San Juan.
El Museo de Las Américas opera en horario de miércoles a viernes de 9:00 a.m. a 12:00 p.m., y de 1:00 p.m. a 4:00 p.m., sábados y domingos de 11:00am a 4:00pm. El uso de mascarillas es obligatorio para todas las actividades. El costo de entrada es de $6.00 para adultos y de $4.00 para estudiantes, Seniors (con ID) y niños.

October 19, 2022; San Juan, Puerto Rico – The celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of the Museum of the Americas will begin tomorrow, Thursday, October 20, with the opening of the exhibition A cry in the hand, by Puerto Rican artist Garvin Sierra. A cry in the hand inaugurates a calendar of activities that includes exhibitions, a commemorative poster and special events.
“We want to invite you to join us at the beginning of the commemoration of the thirty years of the Museum of the Americas with the opening of the exhibition A cry in the hand of the artist Garvin Sierra that will take place tomorrow (October 20, 2022) from the 6:00 pm. In this exhibition, Sierra deals with current issues that the public can identify with and, in a way, connects the story told by our permanent exhibits with what has been happening in Puerto Rico in recent years. We invite you to join us and join the celebrations that will be taking place throughout the year,” said María Ángela López Vilella, executive director of the Museum of the Americas.
A cry in the hand of Garvin Sierra will present over 200 posters from his extensive artistic production, in digital and printed format, which summarizes the topics of greatest discussion and debate in the media in recent years. The artist already has a career as a designer and sculptor, engraver, and the exhibition stands out for his work as an editor.
“In times of advanced management from virtual technology, the art of denunciation and protest acquires a greater capacity for multiplication from electronic networks. Its deployment capacity is equivalent to a powerful force. The exhibition A scream in the hand recognizes the classic definition of the poster as a scream on the wall. Nowadays, the wall is the screen of the mobile phone or of any piece of equipment that is the receiver of the signal that emanates from a transmitter connected to the electronic medium”, said the curator Humberto Figueroa.
The exhibition also features interpretive writings by the teacher Antonio Martorell and the writer Ana Teresa Toro. Visiting it will be an immersive experience within the sharp creativity of the artist through installations of screens and projections that have been possible thanks to the patronage of the Puerto Rican company SunColors, suppliers specialized in large-format printing and graphics. Along with the exhibition, an interpretive program will be taking place that will include talks, workshops and guided tours.
Among the activities that are added to the calendar of celebrations in the month of October are the anticipated celebration of the Night of Catrinas on October 27, from 6:00 p.m., with an altar of the dead entitled Unforgettable Friends of the Museum and Family Sunday "A big party for Tufiño" that commemorates the centenary of the Painter of the town, on October 30 from 11:00 a.m. with a program that includes a creative workshop and a tour with Garvin Sierra and Humberto Figueroa through the exhibition A cry in the hand.
The public programming of the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Museum of the Americas is possible in part thanks to the support of the Special Joint Commission on Legislative Donations for Community Impact, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, the Flamboyán Fund for the Arts, Joaquín and Olga Viso, the Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, the Ángel Ramos Foundation, the Puerto Rican Foundation for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Municipality of San Juan.
The Museum of the Americas operates from Wednesday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m., and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The use of masks is mandatory for all activities. Admission is $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for students, Seniors (with ID) and children.
