Hace un tiempo utilizando el metro de Londres para cruzar la ciudad de un extremo al otro y al coincidir con la hora pico hice la trayectoria entre un mundo de gente. Me llamó la atención especialmente un señor que iba agarrando con sus manos el tubo superior de apoyo pues en el dorso de las mismas llevaba una variedad de tatuajes. Por estos y por su postura corporal, con su cabeza entre los brazos, como ensimismado en una lucha interna, hubiera dado cualquier cosa por saber más de su vida o haber podido interpretar el significado de sus tatuajes.
Desde ese momento más que fascinada, quedé intrigada por el arte del tatuaje y para entenderlo mejor decidí hablar con algunas personas tatuadas abiertas al diálogo también leí mucho sobre el tema y así fui entendiendo mejor el motivo de los mismos.
Los tatuajes son un símbolo de expresión propia y de libertad los cuales buscan su fuente en ideales, tributos, añoranzas, anhelos, motivaciones, admiración o amor por alguien o por algo. También existen muchas personas que simplemente lo llevan porque están de moda.
Cada tatuaje narra una historia muy personal y cada uno contiene un significado y un simbolismo más allá de lo que uno ve a simple vista. Las emociones son la principal fuente de los tatuajes.
No importa el oficio, la edad o la costumbre religiosa de cada persona, todos sienten un profundo orgullo de sus tatuajes. Es algo que nadie les puede arrancar de sus vidas.
El uso del tatuaje data desde hace miles de años entre diversos grupos, culturas y civilizaciones. La palabra tatuaje viene de tatúa, idioma que se habla en la Polinesia y lugar donde desde muy pequeños tatuaban a los niños y a medida que crecían llegaban a tatuar todo su cuerpo función que servía para asustar a los enemigos. Los marineros que llegaron a la Polinesia extendieron esta costumbre por todo el mundo.
Con esta compilación de imágenes que presento en esta ocasión rompo con todo el contexto de mi trayectoria fotográfica durante más de 30 años durante los cuales dediqué mucho tiempo a los temas relacionados con la niñez, el carnaval dominicano, la cultura y tradiciones de varios países así mismo como a la fotografía figurativa en blanco y negro, siendo estas copias realizadas por mi misma en el cuarto oscuro. Es una nueva etapa en mi carrera artística; es mi nueva pasión.

Some time ago I used the London Underground to cross the city from one end to the other and when it coincided with rush hour I made the journey through a world of people. I was especially struck by a man who was holding the upper support tube with his hands because on the back of them he had a variety of tattoos. For these and for his body posture, with his head in his arms, as if absorbed in an internal struggle, he would have given anything to know more about his life or have been able to interpret the meaning of his tattoos.
From that moment, more than fascinated, I was intrigued by the art of tattooing and to understand it better I decided to speak with some tattooed people open to dialogue, I also read a lot about the subject and thus I understood better the reason for them.
Tattoos are a symbol of self-expression and freedom which seek their source in ideals, tributes, longings, longings, motivations, admiration or love for someone or something. There are also many people who simply wear it because they are fashionable.
Each tattoo tells a very personal story and each contains a meaning and symbolism beyond what one sees with the naked eye. Emotions are the main source of tattoos.
No matter the trade, age or religious custom of each person, everyone takes deep pride in their tattoos. It is something that no one can rip out of their lives.

The word tattoo comes from tattoo, a language spoken in Polynesia and a place where children were tattooed from a very young age and as they grew up they got to tattoo their entire body, a function that served to scare enemies. With this compilation of images that I present on this occasion, I break with the entire context of my photographic career for more than 30 years during which I dedicated a lot of time to issues related to childhood, the Dominican carnival, the culture and traditions of various countries as well. same as figurative photography in black and white, these copies being made by myself in the dark room. It is a new stage in my artistic career; is my new passion.

Con más de tres décadas de carrera artística internacional, Clara Martínez-Thédy presenta su nueva exposición individual Imágenes robadas en la Galería Logis d’azur, en Mandelieu.
Dio sus primeros pasos en el mundo del arte en la República Dominicana, lugar donde residió por muchos años, y en el que aún conserva casa y familia. Precisamente en el 2019 recibió el Primer Premio en el Salón Bienal de Fotografía y Video que organiza el Centro de la Imagen de Santo Domingo, y que fue exhibido en la Galería Nacional de Bellas Artes. Su trabajo galardonado pertenece a la serie titulada Emociones en la piel, que ha estado desarrollando en el último lustro y que ahora presenta a la consideración del público francés de la región de Provenza, en la Costa Azul del Mediterráneo.
La exploración que hace Clara Martínez-Thédy de esta temática vinculada a la pigmentación de los cuerpos, representa una ruptura con todos los trabajos antes realizados. Es importante señalar que en torno al tatuaje existe una cultura milenaria alrededor del mundo. Todavía se conservan herramientas utilizadas en el antiguo Jerusalén para marcar a los peregrinos.
En esta muestra podemos apreciar, tanto fotografías en blanco y negro como a color, con toda una variedad de diseños de tatuajes, muchos ejecutados con plantillas y otros a mano alzada, para lo cual se necesita una mayor destreza y precisión para impregnar los pigmentos. Desarrolla este trabajo desde el punto de vista artístico, jugando con distintos elementos compositivos en sus atrevidos encuadres, en los que nos muestra todo tipo de cuerpos receptores de los tatuajes. Estas composiciones fragmentadas, en ocasiones con enfoques de medio campo, contienen historias de vida y anécdotas a través de las imágenes tatuadas en estos seres humanos, como una especie de marca de nacimiento, que no quisiéramos nunca olvidar.
Estas imágenes ilustran el renovado, diverso y estimulante panorama actual de patrones dibujados y grabados en la piel, muchos de los cuales convierten al cuerpo en un una especie de lienzo humano, receptor de verdaderas obras de arte sobre la piel.

With more than three decades of international artistic career, Clara Martínez-Thédy presents her new solo exhibition Stolen Images at the Logis d ’azur Gallery, in Mandelieu.
She took her first steps in the art world in the Dominican Republic, where she lived for many years, and where she still has a home and family. Precisely in 2019 she received the First Prize in the Biennial Exhibition of Photography and Video organized by the Centro de la Imagen de Santo Domingo, and which was exhibited at the National Gallery of Fine Arts. Her award-winning work belongs to the series entitled Emotions on the skin, which she has been developing in the last five years and which she now presents for the consideration of the French public in the Provence region, on the Mediterranean Côte d'Azur.
Clara Martínez-Thédy's exploration of this theme linked to the pigmentation of bodies represents a break with all her previous works. It is important to note that around the tattoo there is an ancient culture around the world. Tools used in ancient Jerusalem to mark pilgrims are still preserved.
In this sample we can see both black and white and color photographs, with a variety of tattoo designs, many executed with stencils and others freehand, for which greater skill and precision is needed to impregnate the pigments. She develops this work from an artistic point of view, playing with different compositional elements in her daring frames, in which she shows us all kinds of bodies receiving tattoos. These fragmented compositions, sometimes with midfield approaches, contain life stories and anecdotes through the images tattooed on these human beings, like a kind of birthmark, that we would never want to forget.
These images illustrate the renewed, diverse and stimulating current panorama of patterns drawn and engraved on the skin, many of which turn the body into a kind of human canvas, the recipient of true works of art on the skin.

Clara Martínez Thedy de nacionalidad dominicana es una reconocida artista del lente cuyo trabajo data desde el año 1987 y ha sido ampliamente expuesto en todo el mundo, desde exposiciones individuales en Londres, Miami, París, Abu Dhabi y República Dominicana hasta muestras colectivas en Asia, América del Sur y Europa. Sus fotografías se han publicado en una variedad de libros y revistas, y forman parte de importantes colecciones de arte privado.
Estudió en el Centro Internacional de Fotografía de Nueva York y siguió su formación en París junto a George Fevre, impresor de renombre mundial que trabajó para iconos como Henri Cartier-Bresson y Josef Koudelka.
Clara ha consagrado gran parte de su tiempo a temas relacionados con la infancia, la cultura y tradición popular de diferentes países, al carnaval dominicano y procesiones religiosas. Durante más de una década, incurrió en la fotografía figurativa en blanco y negro realizando ella misma las impresiones fotográficas en el cuarto oscuro.
Actualmente su inspiración se basa en los tatuajes que capta en todo tipo de circunstancias.
Recientemente publicó su primer libro “África Serena 30 Años Después” y obtuvo el Primer Premio con su obra “Emociones en la Piel” en el Salón Bienal de Fotografía y Video que organiza el Centro de la Imagen de Santo Domingo, y que fue exhibido en la Galería Nacional de Bellas Artes.

Clara Martínez Thedy of Dominican nationality is a renowned lens artist whose work dates back to 1987 and has been widely exhibited throughout the world, from solo exhibitions in London, Miami, Paris, Abu Dhabi and the Dominican Republic to group shows in Asia, America. from the South and Europe. Her photographs have been published in a variety of books and magazines, and are part of important private art collections.
She studied at the International Center of Photography in New York and continued her training in Paris alongside George Fevre, a world-renowned printer who worked for icons such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Josef Koudelka.
Clara has devoted much of her time to issues related to childhood, culture and popular tradition of different countries, the Dominican carnival and religious processions. For more than a decade, she indulged in figurative black and white photography by making the photographic prints herself in the darkroom. Currently her inspiration is based on the tattoos that she captures in all kinds of circumstances.
