El tiempo de todavía. Apuntes desde las artes visuales en el Caribe. 1984–2003 toma su título de las referencias con relación a la percepción, el transcurrir y tangibilidad del tiempo en la región del Caribe que describe el autor dominicano Marcio Veloz Maggiolo en su novela La mosca soldado (Madrid, Siruela, 2004).

Esta latencia del tiempo que Veloz Maggiolo inscribe en la categoría de “todavía” sirve de asidero para profundizar en el dinámico y fructífero paisaje artístico del Caribe que se desarrolló en el período comprendido entre 1984 y 2003. Durante ese lapso, la región enfrentó una crisis por la deuda externa y el aumento del nivel de pobreza y desigualdad en las sociedades. Catástrofes naturales, huracanes, terremotos y erupciones volcánicas afectaron el espacio geográfico colocado en su mismo trayecto. Intervenciones militares, conflictos civiles, sucesiones de gobiernos más o menos corruptos, junto a intenciones de establecer comunidades, esfuerzos de paz e independencias recientes, conviven en este mismo meridiano.
Dos sucesos culturales enmarcan la selección temporal, la primera Bienal de La Habana en 1984, y la quinta y última Bienal del Caribe de 2003, en Santo Domingo. Estos eventos determinaron un rango temporal crucial durante el cual la producción de arte contemporáneo, arraigada desde el Caribe y sus diásporas, se desarrolló, amplió y tejió redes en medio de las complejidades del contexto cultural. Paralelamente, el espacio marcado por estas dos celebraciones también define un estado de cosas, una manera de interrelacionarse y un funcionamiento del sistema del arte que modificó definitivamente el panorama, en tanto exhibió e instauró otras maneras y espacios del accionar. Desde ahí proliferaron las estrategias que buscaban dar visibilidad, proyección y generar espacios de comunidad en la región del Caribe desde las artes visuales.
Esta exposición busca iluminar los temas, las técnicas y las narrativas sociopolíticas en evolución que surgieron durante esta era cardinal. De esta manera, presenta un acercamiento a los artistas y sus obras desde sus circunstancias más inmediatas, lo que permite explorar las diversas influencias, inspiraciones y diálogos interculturales que dieron forma al arte de la región en ese tiempo y que sirvieron de preámbulo para la producción de inicios del Siglo XXI.
El tiempo de todavía sirve como telón de fondo cronológico y cultural, brindando un marco contextual que otorga distintos significados a la trayectoria de la producción artística desde el Caribe hoy.
Still time. Notes from the visual arts in the Caribbean. 1984–2003

This latency of time that Veloz Maggiolo inscribes in the category of “still” serves as a basis for delving into the dynamic and fruitful artistic landscape of the Caribbean that developed in the period between 1984 and 2003. During that period, the region faced a crisis due to external debt and the increase in the level of poverty and inequality in societies. Natural catastrophes, hurricanes, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions affected the geographical space located on its same path. Military interventions, civil conflicts, successions of more or less corrupt governments, along with intentions to establish communities, peace efforts and recent independence, coexist on this same meridian.
Two cultural events frame the temporary selection, the first Havana Biennial in 1984, and the fifth and last Caribbean Biennial in 2003, in Santo Domingo. These events determined a crucial temporal range during which contemporary art production, rooted in the Caribbean and its diasporas, developed, expanded and wove networks amidst the complexities of the cultural context. At the same time, the space marked by these two celebrations also defines a state of things, a way of interrelating and a functioning of the art system that definitively modified the panorama, as it exhibited and established other ways and spaces of action. From there, strategies proliferated that sought to give visibility, projection and generate community spaces in the Caribbean region through the visual arts.
This exhibition seeks to illuminate the evolving sociopolitical themes, techniques, and narratives that emerged during this cardinal era. In this way, it presents an approach to the artists and their works from their most immediate circumstances, which allows us to explore the various influences, inspirations and intercultural dialogues that shaped the art of the region at that time and that served as a preamble for the production. from the beginning of the 21st century.
The time of still serves as a chronological and cultural backdrop, providing a contextual framework that gives different meanings to the trajectory of artistic production from the Caribbean today.
