El arte dominicano viaja por el mundo. El estilo de los nuevos creadores ha captado la atención de importantes galerías y centros culturales.
Uno de ellos es Engel Leonardo, un artista integral que deja su sello. Una de sus piezas ha sido adquirida para la colección permanente del prestigioso Museo Reina Sofía, en España, así como el Museo Guggenheim de Nueva York.
Nacido en Baní, al sur del país en 1977, y egresado de la Facultad de Artes de la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), ha vivido en Santo Domingo y desde aquí sus obras han paseado por importantes espacios a nivel internacional desde el año 2014.
Fue en Teorética, Costa Rica, que empezó el periplo y luego fue invitado por primera vez a ARCOMadrid meses después, lo que lo ayudó a la proyección de su trabajo y “a ir construyendo una saludable red de amistad y trabajo de la cual estoy muy orgulloso y agradecido”, expresa a Diario Libre el artista de 44 años.
La pieza “Pisos”, 2018, fue seleccionada durante la feria de arte contemporáneo ARCO Madrid por el director del Museo, Manuel Borja-Villel, la jefa de exhibiciones, Teresa Velázquez, y la jefa de colecciones, Rosario Peiró.
“Lo que compone esta creación son figuras basadas en el estudio de símbolos taínos. Yo prefiero llamarlo pueblos originarios porque no eran solo taínos. Mi obra está relacionada con la transmisión del conocimiento africano e indígena a través del arte contemporáneo”, precisa.
Además de la colección del Museo Reina Sofía, su arte está en el Museo Guggenheim (Nueva York), con la pieza “Antillas” (2013).
Se ha presentado también en el Museo de Arte Moderno de Santo Domingo, el Centro Nacional de Artes Plásticas (París) y Fundación Kadist (París-San Francisco).
Lo más reciente han sido exhibiciones individuales en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo MAC Niteroi (Río de Janeiro) y en Kunsthalle Lissabon (Lisboa).
¿Cómo Engel Leonardo logró llegar ahí? En una entrevista con Diario Libre lo explica. “Este conjunto de exhibiciones y logros se van sumando para que finalmente este trabajo consiga entrar a la (prestigiosa) selección, pero también tiene que ver el hecho de que desde el 2014, en que mi trabajo empieza a verse fuera de República Dominicana, comienzan a generarse otras adquisiciones”, comenta el artista banilejo.
Leonardo dice con orgullo que su trabajo visual comenzó a llamar la atención de inmediato, pues ya en el año 2017 tuvo su primera individual en Madrid.
“Pienso que tiene que ver con la pertinencia y vigencia de los discursos que desarrollo a partir de mis trabajos e investigaciones y cómo estos se relacionan con las conversaciones y discusiones actuales sobre estética y arte contemporáneo en la región y en el mundo”, refiere a DL sobre las muestras en esos países.
La actividad creativa la define como “las relaciones entre lo humano y la historia; la arquitectura y la cultura material son algunos de mis intereses centrales”, dice. Su producción suele basarse en investigaciones sobre arquitectura moderna tropical, historias reprimidas por la modernidad, y la transmisión del conocimiento indígena y africano a través de objetos generalmente vistos como artesanales, folclóricos o etnográficos.
Consideraciones de los expertos
Según detalla Engel Leonardo, la obra “Pisos” hace un viaje por los pueblos originarios de las Antillas y las Américas y fue seleccionada por sus implicaciones críticas sobre colonialismo, modernidad y el reconocimiento de los pueblos originarios de América y de las Antillas. Así como por el interés del Museo en ampliar el acervo de arte latinoamericano y la inclusión de nuevas generaciones de artistas. “Cuestiona las celebraciones relacionadas con la figura de Colón, el Faro a Colón y las celebraciones de las ideas coloniales...”, señala. Las tres obras que componen “Pisos” serán presentadas en futuras exhibiciones de la colección permanente en las salas del Museo en Madrid.
Asimismo, la obra adquirida por el Museo Guggenheim, que lleva por nombre “Antillas” 2013, fue seleccionada por el curador Pablo León de la Barra durante sus visitas a la República Dominicana por sus discursos implícitos sobre modernidad, estéticas afro-caribeñas y el estudio de la flora endémica y nativa del archipiélago.
Esta adquisición forma parte del programa USB Map Global Art Initiative que complementa la colección del museo con nuevas obras de Latinoamérica y otras regiones del mundo. Este conjunto escultórico será presentado en las distintas sedes del Guggenheim, Nueva York, Bilbao, entre otras.
El artista afirma que se puede vivir del arte y a los nuevos artistas los invita a mantener su esencia y promover su trabajo. “Entrar a formar parte de estas colecciones a mis 40 años me provoca una gran emoción, por el hecho de poner mi trabajo en diálogo con otros artistas de la región y del mundo, tanto contemporáneos como históricos, así como por la posibilidad de abrir puertas para que el trabajo de los artistas dominicanos sea reconocido internacionalmente”, concluye Engel Leonardo.

Dominican art travels the world. The style of the new creators has captured the attention of important galleries and cultural centers.
One of them is Engel Leonardo, an integral artist who leaves his mark on him. One of his pieces has been acquired for the permanent collection of the prestigious Reina Sofía Museum in Spain, as well as the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
Born in Baní, in the south of the country in 1977, and graduated from the Faculty of Arts of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), he has lived in Santo Domingo and from here his works have toured important international spaces since the year 2014.
It was in Teorética, Costa Rica, that the journey began and then he was invited for the first time to ARCO Madrid months later, which helped him to project his work and “to build a healthy network of friendship and work of which I am very proud and grateful, ”the 44-year-old artist told Diario Libre.
The piece “Pisos”, 2018, was selected during the ARCO Madrid contemporary art fair by the director of the Museum, Manuel Borja-Villel, the head of exhibitions, Teresa Velázquez, and the head of collections, Rosario Peiró.

It has also been presented at the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo, the National Center for Plastic Arts (Paris) and the Kadist Foundation (Paris-San Francisco).
The most recent have been individual exhibitions at the MAC Niteroi Museum of Contemporary Art (Rio de Janeiro) and at Kunsthalle Lissabon (Lisbon).
How did Engel Leonardo get there? In an interview with Diario Libre he explains it. “This set of exhibitions and achievements are added so that finally this work gets to enter the (prestigious) selection, but it also has to do with the fact that since 2014, when my work began to be seen outside the Dominican Republic, to generate other acquisitions ”, comments the Banilejo artist.
Leonardo proudly says that his visual work began to attract attention immediately, since already in 2017 he had his first individual in Madrid.
"I think it has to do with the relevance and validity of the discourses that I develop based on my work and research and how these relate to current conversations and discussions about aesthetics and contemporary art in the region and in the world", he refers to DL about the samples in those countries.
He defines creative activity as “the relationships between the human and history; architecture and material culture are some of my central interests ”, he says. His production is usually based on research on modern tropical architecture, stories repressed by modernity, and the transmission of indigenous and African knowledge through objects generally seen as handmade, folkloric or ethnographic.
Expert considerations
According to Engel Leonardo, the work "Pisos" makes a journey through the original peoples of the Antilles and the Americas and was selected for its critical implications on colonialism, modernity and the recognition of the original peoples of America and the Antilles. As well as the interest of the Museum in expanding the collection of Latin American art and the inclusion of new generations of artists. "He questions the celebrations related to the figure of Columbus, the Columbus Lighthouse and the celebrations of colonial ideas ...", he points out. The three works that make up “Pisos” will be presented in future exhibitions of the permanent collection in the rooms of the Museum in Madrid.
Likewise, the work acquired by the Guggenheim Museum, which is called "Antillas" 2013, was selected by the curator Pablo León de la Barra during his visits to the Dominican Republic for his implicit discourses on modernity, Afro-Caribbean aesthetics and the study of the endemic and native flora of the archipelago.
This acquisition is part of the USB Map Global Art Initiative program that complements the museum's collection with new works from Latin America and other regions of the world. This sculptural ensemble will be presented at the different venues of the Guggenheim, New York, Bilbao, among others.
The artist affirms that art can be made a living and new artists are invited to maintain their essence and promote their work. “Joining these collections at the age of 40 causes me great emotion, due to the fact that I put my work in dialogue with other artists from the region and the world, both contemporary and historical, as well as the possibility of opening doors for the work of Dominican artists to be recognized internationally ”, concludes Engel Leonardo.
