El poeta y profesor de arte tenía 71 años, en el 2016 fue diagnosticado con cáncer

(Archivo/GFR) El artista puertorriqueño y ex prisionero político Elizam Escobar falleció hoy a los 71 años, tras complicaciones de salud, según publicaciones de amigos y colegas en las redes sociales. El amigo del artista Ernesto Akaba compartió la noticia en las redes sociales. De igual forma en su página de Facebook se muestran mensajes de condolencias para la familia y en honor a su destacada vida de obra y sacrificios. La Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño de Puerto Rico confirmó a su vez la muerte del artista. La performera Michelle O. R. compartió una reflexión sobre la partida física del artista plástico.
“Durante este perforpoema del 2010 conocí a Don Elizam Escobar. En el momento que bajo al público, intercambiamos palabras brevemente y de ahí en adelante continuamos nuestra conversación por 11 años. Es y será Elizam un gran ejemplo de valentía, compromiso, resistencia... un artista con un talento feroz, un poeta de escala intergaláctica y mi suerte es que pude decírselo muchas veces en persona, brindar en hnos. Rivera con él por una colonia que ambos sabíamos que va a caer. Seremos tan libres como tú Elizam, aquí seguimos en pie de lucha. Descansa en poder”, escribió en la página de Escobar en Facebook. A principios del 2016 a Escobar le diagnosticaron un cáncer en el área paranasal y en la cavidad nasal, del que fue operado. Escobar se destacó en el campo del arte como pintor, poeta y profesor de arte. En el ámbito político fue un defensor incansable en busca de la independencia de Puerto Rico. Su vida fue una lucha constante a través de reclamos de justicia para la sociedad. Fue miembro de un movimiento clandestino puertorriqueño que luchaba por la independencia de Puerto Rico, Escobar fue sentenciado a prisión en 1980 por el gobierno de Estados Unidos, acusado por conspiración sediciosa. Estuvo preso por 19 años, siendo excarcelado en 1999.
En una entrevista publicada en El Nuevo Día en el 2016 reiteró que nunca se arrepintió de luchar por la independencia del país. “No, no me arrepiento. Al contrario, lo haría mejor. Pero obviamente cada momento histórico tiene su demanda. En algún otro foro me preguntaron si yo lo haría de nuevo y lo que dije es que yo creo que cada época histórica tiene sus contradicciones y sus demandas. En la época en la que yo participé de la lucha armada clandestina, eso era para mí importante, significativo y necesario porque había un movimiento de derecha que estaba asesinando independentistas, obreros, quemando periódicos… Y aquí siempre hemos mantenido una lucha armada, desde los indios hasta ahora. Pero, por ejemplo, en el momento en que llegué a Puerto Rico (en 1999) la lucha principal era contra la Marina en "Vieques" y la lucha era resistencia pacífica. Y nosotros respetábamos y defendíamos ese tipo de lucha. Pero en cualquier momento, cuando haya una necesidad distinta, pues uno tiene que ser creativo”, sentenció en aquel entonces.
La sexta edición de La "Campechada" en el 2016 fue dedicada a su trayectoria artística.
El artista nació en Ponce y obtuvo su bachillerato en artes en la Universidad de Puerto Rico en 1973. Continuó estudios en la Universidad de la Ciudad de Nueva York, según se desprende de la biografía del artista, publicada por el Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR).
Luego de estar confinado regresó a Puerto Rico y comenzó a trabajar como profesor de la Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño de Puerto Rico, en el Viejo San Juan, siendo maestro de una generación de artistas. Según los datos que se desprenden de la biografía del MAPR, la obra de Escobar plantea asuntos de la comunicación humana, el fenómeno del pintor como observador (o no) de la realidad y la marginalidad y el aislamiento contemporáneo.
En la entrevista del 2016 con este medio, el artista compartió además su visión de la muerte.
“La muerte… Bueno, pues la muerte en vida, no. Pero la muerte ya física, biológica, yo creo que es una etapa de la vida. Nadie se quiere morir físicamente, a menos que tengas una enfermedad bien fuerte que tú quieras irte, como Kafka que creo que tenía tuberculosis y le dijo al médico, mira mátame, si tú no me matas eres un asesino. Así que hay que decir que hay un momento en el que tú ya quieres dejar este mundo porque no puedes más. Yo creo que el arte es una respuesta a la muerte porque es la forma de mantener vivo todas las pasiones, las contradicciones, los logros de la humanidad, el aprecio por todo, por la naturaleza, por el mar, por el universo. Hay mucha gente que hace arte efímero, que está chévere, pero mano pa’ qué vamos a ser más efímeros de lo que ya somos, tú sabes. Creo que el arte es lo que le da seguimiento, continuidad, a toda la problemática humana, al misterio de estar vivo, porque estar vivo es un misterio bien fuerte”, sostuvo Escobar ante la pregunta de la periodista Mariela Fullana.

I think art is what it gives follow-up, continuity, to all the human problems, to the mystery of being alive, because being alive is a very strong mystery, ”Escobar said when asked by journalist Mariela Fullana.
