(FUENTE EXTERNA)El destacado artista y escultor colombiano Gustavo Vélez ha venido a la República Dominicana trayendo consigo esculturas gigantes que estarán distribuidas en varios espacios de la ciudad de Santo Domingo y Casa de Campo, en La Romana. Vélez, reconocido por el Congreso de su país como uno de los artistas destacados del siglo XXI, dará apertura la muestra “Formas y ritmos de la dimensión geométrica”. De forma itinerante el creador recorre distintas ciudades del mundo y durante más de tres meses sitios emblemáticos de Santo Domingo serán los anfitriones de 40 esculturas en una muestra representativa. “Mi obra busca una armonía contundente entre cada una de las líneas que la forman, dándole significado, valor y lógica a los sueños. El desafío es lograr que la dureza y la pesadez de los materiales tengan un toque de delicadeza y transparencia, que la escultura se vuelve ligera y que la geometría flote en el espacio como una provocación del infinito, como energía cósmica”, destaca Gustavo Vélez sobre su escultura contemporánea que impacta en Latinoamérica. Diario Libre entrevistó a Gustavo Vélez, quien se encuentra en el país a propósito de la inauguración de la muestra, la noche de este jueves 13 de octubre en el MAM.
Diario Libre: ¿Qué motiva a titular su muestra Formas y ritmos de la dimensión geométrica? Gustavo Vélez: El título Formas y Ritmos en la Dimensión Geométrica es el resultado de un proceso que inició desde la selección del elenco de esculturas que participan en esta exposición junto con la Galería Luz Botero hasta el texto curatorial de Amable López Meléndez, crítico y asesor del Museo de Arte Moderno de República Dominicana. Son formas que reflejan ritmos que logran dimensionarse en la geometría, son esculturas que dan forma a las dimensiones geométricas que crea mi mente. DL: Es la primera vez que trae sus esculturas a Santo Domingo. ¿Alguna escultura la seleccionó pensando en esta tierra? GV: Si, me siento honrado de poder compartir 40 de mis creaciones con los locales y visitantes de República Dominicana por primera vez. No hay una obra en particular que haya seleccionado pensando en el lugar… Considero que cada una de las esculturas, en su conjunto, pretenden engalanar y honrar el espacio donde será exhibidas. Santo Domingo, con su Centro Histórico, el Museo de Arte Moderno y Altos de Chavón en La Romana las acogerán y deseo que complementen el entorno donde son instaladas y sean una oportunidad para el disfrute, la reflexión…La idea es que sean una pausa en el camino para quienes las observen. DL: ¿Qué elementos de lo latinoamericano y más aún, lo colombiano, tienen sus esculturas? GV: La naturaleza es una gran fuente de inspiración. Por eso mi geometría es intuitiva y orgánica. La intuición como reflejo de mi raza latina, colombiana y lo orgánico que proviene de las montañas que me vieron nacer. DL: Al reflexionar sobre su carrera, ¿qué sentimiento le produce que sus piezas estén en distintos puntos del mundo, como "Flying", una escultura de colección en Corea del Sur? El arte une, acorta distancias, relaciona culturas y hace visible el sentir, el latir de una sociedad. Poder tener la oportunidad de llevar mis esculturas a diferentes latitudes me llena de felicidad y me reta a seguir mostrando mi país a través ante el mundo a través del arte. DL: ¿Cómo describe su obra? GV: Mi obra es un reflejo de lo que soy. Mis esculturas en mármol, bronce y acero son mis palabras, son el medio por el cual mejor puedo expresar mis sentimientos. Pretendo que lo que llegue al alma de quienes las observen sean sentimientos de paz y armonía. Que la fluidez de las líneas orgánicas de lo que interpreto como geometría sea canales de tranquilidad. DL: ¿Cuál ha sido la escultura más desafiante? GV: La próxima…la que está por ser creada, por develar. Sobre las instalaciones Algunas esculturas pueden llegar a pesar cinco toneladas. (FUENTE EXTERNA)Las esculturas miden hasta 6 metros de altura, cómo es el caso de “Visiones”, un obra en mármol blanco de carrara instalada en la plazoleta central del Museo de Arte Moderno. Sostiene que muchas de las monumentales que se exhibirán en llegan a pesar hasta 5 toneladas. Los materiales de las obras que componen la exposición son mármol blanco carrara, mármol negro marquina, bronce, stainless y corten steel. Recientemente instaló una escultura de 4 metros de altura en el nuevo complejo de oficinas de la empresa de tecnología Apple ubicada en San Diego, California. Ha recibido los reconocimientos ‘Orden de la Democracia Simón Bolívar’, ‘Orden al Gran Caballero’ y ‘Estrella de Oro de la Cultura de Antioquia’, impuestos por el Congreso de la República de Colombia y la gobernación del departamento de Antioquia. Las piezas estarán instaladas hasta el 29 de enero de 2023 dentro y en las afueras del Museo de Arte Moderno (MAM), en la Plaza de la Cultura, así como en la Ciudad Colonial de Santo Domingo y en Altos de Chavón, en La Romana. (EXTERNAL SOURCE) The outstanding Colombian artist and sculptor Gustavo Vélez has come to the Dominican Republic bringing with him giant sculptures that will be distributed in various spaces in the city of Santo Domingo and Casa de Campo, in La Romana.
Vélez, recognized by the Congress of his country as one of the outstanding artists of the 21st century, will open the exhibition “Forms and rhythms of the geometric dimension”.
In an itinerant way, the creator visits different cities of the world and for more than three months emblematic places of Santo Domingo will host 40 sculptures in a representative sample.
“My work seeks a forceful harmony between each of the lines that form it, giving meaning, value and logic to dreams. The challenge is to ensure that the hardness and heaviness of the materials have a touch of delicacy and transparency, that the sculpture becomes light and that the geometry floats in space like a provocation of infinity, like cosmic energy”, highlights Gustavo Vélez about his contemporary sculpture that impacts Latin America.

Diario Libre interviewed Gustavo Vélez, who is in the country for the opening of the exhibition, this Thursday night, October 13 at the MAM.
Diario Libre: What motivates you to title your exhibition Forms and rhythms of the geometric dimension?
Gustavo Vélez: The title Forms and Rhythms in the Geometric Dimension is the result of a process that began with the selection of the cast of sculptures that participate in this exhibition together with the Luz Botero Gallery, up to the curatorial text by Amable López Meléndez, critic and advisor of the Museum of Modern Art of the Dominican Republic.
They are forms that reflect rhythms that manage to dimension themselves in geometry, they are sculptures that give shape to the geometric dimensions that my mind creates.
DL: It is the first time that you bring his sculptures to Santo Domingo. Did any sculpture select it with this land in mind?
GV: Yes, I am honored to be able to share 40 of my creations with locals and visitors to the Dominican Republic for the first time. There is no particular work that I have selected with the place in mind… I consider that each of the sculptures, as a whole, intend to adorn and honor the space where they will be exhibited.
Santo Domingo, with its Historic Center, the Museum of Modern Art and Altos de Chavón in La Romana will welcome them and I hope that they complement the environment where they are installed and are an opportunity for enjoyment, reflection... The idea is that they are a pause in the way for those who observe them.
DL: What elements of the Latin American and even more so, the Colombian, do your sculptures have?
GV: Nature is a great source of inspiration. That's why my geometry is intuitive and organic. Intuition as a reflection of my Latin, Colombian race and the organic that comes from the mountains where I was born.
DL: Reflecting on his career, what feeling does it give you that his pieces are in different parts of the world, such as "Flying", a collectible sculpture in South Korea?
Art unites, shortens distances, relates cultures and makes visible the feeling, the heartbeat of a society. Being able to have the opportunity to take my sculptures to different latitudes fills me with happiness and challenges me to continue showing my country to the world through art.
DL: How do you describe your work?
GV: My work is a reflection of who I am. My sculptures in marble, bronze and steel are my words, they are the means by which I can best express my feelings. I intend that what reaches the soul of those who observe them are feelings of peace and harmony. May the fluidity of the organic lines of what I interpret as geometry be channels of tranquility.
DL: What has been the most challenging sculpture?
GV: The next one…the one that is yet to be created, to be unveiled.
About the facilities
Some sculptures can weigh up to five tons. (EXTERNAL SOURCE) The sculptures measure up to 6 meters high, as is the case of “Visiones”, a work in white Carrara marble installed in the central square of the Museum of Modern Art.

He recently installed a 13-foot-tall sculpture in the new office complex of the technology company Apple located in San Diego, California.
He has received the 'Simón Bolívar Order of Democracy', 'Great Knight Order' and 'Gold Star of the Culture of Antioquia' awards, imposed by the Congress of the Republic of Colombia and the government of the department of Antioquia.
