El show
Como artista latinoamericana contemporánea, el trabajo de Scherezade García se preocupa por la creación de narrativas que son esenciales para la comprensión de las Américas y su experiencias . Su trabajo tiene la intención de revelar los numerosos encuentros culturales en curso que continuamente dan forma y remodelan la forma en que vemos, percibimos y coloreamos las Américas. Su trabajo se centra en las políticas de inclusión. La historia juega un papel central en su práctica artística de decodificar y deconstruir narrativas visuales de poder. García se involucra en la historia y la etnografía histórica para prestar mucha atención a las tradiciones, los métodos y los puntos de vista sociales dominantes para hacer surgir visualmente otras voces. A través de la deconstrucción, la yuxtaposición de símbolos de las Américas construida, la nacionalidad y la libertad incrustadas en la esclavitud y la opresión, pretende presentar los signos más atroces de resistencia a través de la mezcla de razas, a través de un optimismo feroz.
La raza, la política del color (formal y conceptualmente) es esencial para su trabajo. La figura canela ha sido una constante en la trayectoria de García desde 1996. Mezclar todos los colores en una paleta es una acción inclusiva, el resultado de tal actividad es el color canela. La nueva raza, representada por su omnipresente figura canela, plantea la creación de una nueva estética. Esta estética única con nuevas reglas originada por el exuberante paisaje, el trasplante, apropiación y transformación de tradiciones. Además, la iconografía católica con mis ángeles / guerreros mestizos es una forma de colonizar a los colonizadores, apropiándose, transformando y creando nuevos iconos.
El Atlántico, este camino líquido azul y profundo obstáculo provoca la imaginación de García. El mar azul representa la salida y la frontera. Traza historias sobre la libertad, la esclavitud y la supervivencia, lleva nuestro ADN y es una fuente inagotable de historias que evolucionan continuamente y nos recuerdan la fluidez de nuestra identidad, nuestra memoria colectiva. A través de sus dibujos y pinturas de técnica mixta, Scherezade García da lugar a códigos visuales que me llevan a composiciones espontáneas de significados intrigantes. Cada obra de arte se crea como una pieza individual, unida por una amenaza de pensamiento, construido en proceso una narrativa. Estas narrativas alegóricas se crean apropiándose y transformando símbolos y objetos que han incluido chalecos salvavidas, cámaras de aire, carpas, recortes de periódicos e íconos religiosos.
El artista
Scherezade García es una pintora, grabadora y artista de instalaciones cuyo trabajo a menudo explora alegorías de la historia, la migración, la memoria colectiva y ancestral y la colonización cultural y la política. Cofundadora del Proyecto GRÁFICA de York Dominicana, tiene Diploma de la Escuela de Diseño de Altos de Chavón, un BFA de la Escuela de Diseño de Parsons | The New School y un MFA de The City College of New York, CUNY.

Praxis is pleased to present Stories of Wonder: When the Sea is my Land, a solo exhibition by Scherezade Garcia (b. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic). The exhibition will be open from September 16th until November 13th 2021. We are open to the public Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm at 501 W 20th Street, New York, NY, 10011.
The Show
As a Latinx contemporary artist, Scherezade Garcia’s work is concerned with the creation of narratives that are essential to the understanding of America and the American experience. Her work intends to unveil the many ongoing cultural encounters that continuously shape and reshape how we view, perceive, and color America. Her work is centered on the politics of inclusion. History plays a central role in her artistic practice of decoding and deconstructing visual narratives of power. Garcia engages history and historical ethnography to pay close attention to traditions, methods, and dominant societal points of view to visually bring forth other voices. Through the deconstruction, the juxtaposition of symbols of constructed Americanness, nationhood and freedom embedded in slavery and oppression, she aims to present the most outrageous signs of resistance through the mixing of race, through a fierce Optimism.
Race, the politics of color (formally and conceptually) is essential to her work. The cinnamon figure has been a constant in Garcia’s trajectory since 1996. Mixing all the colors in a palette is an inclusive action, the outcome of such activity is cinnamon color. The new race, represented by her ever-present cinnamon figure, states the creation of a new aesthetic. This unique aesthetic with new rules originated by the lush landscape, the transplantation, appropriation, and transformation of traditions. Also, the catholic iconography with my mixed- race warrior/angels is a way of colonizing the colonizers, by appropriating, transforming and creating new icons.
The Atlantic, this blue liquid road and profound obstacle provokes Garcia’s imagination. The blue sea represents the way out and the frontier. It maps stories about freedom, slavery, and survival, it carries our DNA, and it’s an endless source of stories, evolving continuously, reminding us the fluidity of our identity, our collective memory. with its inclusivity of spirit, Garcia navigates between tragedy, beauty, carnaval, and traces of divinity.
Through her drawings and mixed media paintings, Scherezade Garcia gives rise to visual codes which lead me to spontaneous compositions of intriguing meanings. Each artwork is created as an individual piece, united by a threat of thought, building in the process a narrative. These allegorical narratives are created by appropriating and transforming symbols and objects that have included life jackets, inner tubes, tents, newspaper clippings and religious icons.
The Artist
Scherezade García is a painter, printmaker, and installation artist whose work often explores allegories of history, migration, collective and ancestral memory, and cultural colonization and politics. A co-founder of the Dominican York Proyecto GRÁFICA, she holds an AAS from Altos de Chavón School of Design, a BFA from Parsons School of Design | The New School, and an MFA from The City College of New York, CUNY.
García has been featured in solo and duo exhibitions at the Art Museum of the Americas, Clifford Art Gallery at Colgate University, Miller Theater at Columbia University, Lehman College Art Gallery, Crossroads Gallery at the University of Notre Dame, Museo de Arte de Santo Domingo and others. She has participated in the Havana Biennial, the International Biennial of Paintings at Haute de Cagnes, the IV Caribbean Biennial, Trienal Poli/Gráfica de San Juan, Latin American Biennial, BRIC Biennial, Venice Autonomous Biennial, and international fairs. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Art Museum of the Americas, El Museo del Barrio, The Housatonic Museum of Art, El Museo de Arte Moderno in Santo Domingo, and others. García is the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant (2015) and the Colene Brown Art Prize (2020). An edited monograph on her work ‘Scherezade García: From This Side of the Atlantic’, was published in 2020 by the Art Museum of the Americas. She is a member of the Artist Advisory Council of Arts Connection and No Longer Empty. She sits on the Board of Directors of the College Art Association (2020-2024).
García is represented by Praxis Art Gallery in New York. Garcia is an Assistant Professor at The University of Texas @ Austin.
