24 obras, 24 artistas. Una colectiva de arte República Dominicana en Oriente Medio

Presentar una exposición de arte con maestros incuestionables como pintores dominicanos cimeros e innovadores, otorga a la República Dominicana una brillante imagen de su arte nacional moderno, su identidad y su calidad. La gestión y realización de este acontecimiento se debe a la embajada dominicana en Catar.
Su contenido ha sido muy estudiado por un núcleo de comisarios, y se ha hecho una estricta selección de creadores y de obras. Conformar la exposición y llevarla a Doha ha pedido muchos esfuerzos, iniciativas y trabajo, colaborando también el Ministerio de Cultura, el Museo de Arte Moderno, el Museo Bellapart, y coleccionistas privados completando el conjunto. Es probablemente la más exhaustiva muestra de maestros nuestros que se haya llevado al exterior, y sin duda la primera al Estado de Catar y al Oriente Medio.
Catar, cultura e intercambios. Catar es uno de los países árabes con mayor desarrollo, con una política de educación y cultura particularmente activa, de más fuerte impulso aun en el siglo XXI. Doha, capital del Catar, cuenta con museos e instituciones artísticas de primer orden –citaremos el Museo de Arte Islámico, el Museo de Arte Moderno – el “Mathaf-“, el Centro de Artes Visuales, la Aldea Cultural Katara, la Bienal de Caligrafía-, no solo renombrados en la región, sino ya destacados por la prensa internacional especializada en arte.
Y debemos mencionar el Mundial de Fútbol a celebrarse allí en 2022, no solamente una hazaña en cuanto a los estadios e instalaciones deportivas –únicos-, sino que al florecimiento cultural se le ha dado casi una importancia paralela, uniendo el deporte y el arte como actividades sobresalientes de la humanidad.
Por otra parte, esta exposición de arte dominicano en Doha tiene –casualmente- un carácter de reciprocidad, ya que en 2011- se presentó en Bellas Artes una pléyade de artistas de Catar, hombres y mujeres, de distintas generaciones.
La espléndida y exitosa exposición se intituló “Punto de Encuentro”, impresionante muestra y primicia en Santo Domingo.
Hubo otros proyectos e intercambios –incluyendo concurso de fotografía y calendario- en los dos años siguientes.
Una exposición peculiar. Ejemplo entre las misiones diplomáticas, la embajada dominicana en Londres organizaba una Semana de la República Dominicana, económica y cultural con arte siempre.
El embajador Federico Cuello Camilo prosiguió la iniciativa en Catar, y programó, para su celebración en noviembre de 2020, la exposición de pintura, “República del Color”. ¿De dónde viene ese nombre? Recordamos todos el documental de arte –casi un largometraje- del joven cineasta Héctor Valdez, y que se le asoció Danilo de los Santos en un libro.
De la “República del Color” y la selección de artistas que hizo el inolvidable amigo e historiador, nació esta exposición de maestros, siendo por cierto Danilo su curador inicial.
Ahora bien, nos preguntaremos cómo se puede presentar, en tiempos de crisis aguda y en Catar, obras maestras de museos, hasta una –la de Chassériau- del Museo del Louvre. ¡Y es justamente por el período dramático atravesado, que se puede lograr!
“República del Color” será una exposición virtual – como todas las muestras en el mundo a partir del mes de marzo-, disponible en portal electrónico, pero las obras estarán impresas en tela a alta resolución, y así se expondrán cual una hermosa ilusión… La museografía jugará un papel fundamental, categoría asegurada, conociendo la altura de los medios cataríes y la exigencia del embajador Cuello.
No se plantean los casi incosteables gastos de transporte, seguro y embalaje. Sin embargo, habrá un catálogo, con reproducciones y textos, en español, inglés y árabe, verdadera lección de arte dominicano –autoría de Danilo de Santos para el texto central-.
Definición de la muestra. En el siglo XX – con excepción de Chassériau y Desangles-, los expositores pasaron de promesas seguras a la madurez y la maestría reconocidas. Todavía, ellos mantienen su dominio, una definición estilística abierta, un lenguaje cromático-formal diversificado, en su mayoría sin escisión entre figuración y abstracción.
El virtuosismo del dibujo se transmite en pinturas emblemáticas de la historia del arte: notamos el canto del color, la energía de la pincelada, la “tesitura” de la pasta. El vigor, la espiritualidad, la fluidez conjugadas seducen permanentemente, y el interés se renueva ante cada cuadro.
Tanto los maestros dominicanos por nacimiento como los inmigrantes “dominicanizados”, sin descartar las características académicas universales nos refieren a naturaleza y mestizaje, tradiciones e identidades nacionales, junto a elementos y mitologías personales, o sea una propuesta plural, de la técnica a la metáfora pictórica.
Si indagan más denominadores comunes, los maestros seleccionados evolucionaron de un realismo tropical a lineamientos del expresionismo, emoción y vehemencia. Tampoco el surrealismo criollo evade esa impronta, tan orgánica como constructiva.
Lugar de la exposición. “República del Color” se presentará en un sitio privilegiado y único, la Aldea Cultural Katara, igualmente llamada Aldea de la Cultura y la Creación.
Este centro, muy activo y de alta reputación, pequeña ciudad dentro de la ciudad, en parte concebido para el Mundial de 2022, combina museos, galerías, talleres, casas recién construidas –hay una Casa de la Opera-, entre vías estrechas y espacios abiertos, además de una Mezquita y un Anfiteatro espectaculares.

Dominican teachers in Qatar
24 works, 24 artists. An art collective Dominican Republic in the Middle East

Presenting an art exhibition with unquestionable masters such as leading and innovative Dominican painters, gives the Dominican Republic a brilliant image of its modern national art, its identity and its quality. The management and implementation of this event is due to the Dominican embassy in Qatar.
Its content has been closely studied by a nucleus of curators, and a strict selection of creators and works has been made. Shaping the exhibition and taking it to Doha has required many efforts, initiatives and work, also collaborating with the Ministry of Culture, the Museum of Modern Art, the Bellapart Museum, and private collectors completing the set. It is probably the most exhaustive sample of our teachers that has been taken abroad, and without a doubt the first to the State of Qatar and the Middle East.
Qatar, culture and exchanges. Qatar is one of the most developed Arab countries, with a particularly active education and culture policy, with even stronger momentum in the 21st century. Doha, capital of Qatar, has museums and art institutions of the first order - we will mention the Museum of Islamic Art, the Museum of Modern Art - the "Mathaf-", the Center for Visual Arts, the Katara Cultural Village, the Calligraphy Biennial -, not only renowned in the region, but already highlighted by the international press specialized in art.
And we must mention the Soccer World Cup to be held there in 2022, not only a feat in terms of stadiums and sports facilities - unique - but the cultural flourishing has been given almost parallel importance, uniting sport and art as outstanding activities of mankind.
On the other hand, this exhibition of Dominican art in Doha has - coincidentally - a reciprocal nature, since in 2011 - a plethora of artists from Qatar, men and women, of different generations, was presented in Fine Arts.
The splendid and successful exhibition was entitled “Meeting Point”, an impressive exhibition and a first in Santo Domingo.
There were other projects and exchanges - including a photo contest and calendar - in the next two years.
A peculiar exhibition. An example among diplomatic missions, the Dominican embassy in London organized a Week of the Dominican Republic, economic and cultural with art always.
Ambassador Federico Cuello Camilo continued the initiative in Qatar, and scheduled, for its celebration in November 2020, the painting exhibition, “República del Color”.
Where does that name come from? We all remember the art documentary -almost a feature film- by the young filmmaker Héctor Valdez, and that Danilo de los Santos was associated with him in a book.
From the "Republic of Color" and the selection of artists made by the unforgettable friend and historian, this exhibition of masters was born, with Danilo being its initial curator.
Now, we will ask ourselves how, in times of acute crisis and in Qatar, museum masterpieces can be presented, even one - that of Chasséria - from the Louvre Museum. And it is precisely because of the dramatic period through which it can be achieved!
“República del Color” will be a virtual exhibition - like all the exhibitions in the world starting in March -, available on the electronic portal, but the works will be printed on high resolution fabric, and thus they will be exhibited like a beautiful illusion ... The museography will play a fundamental role, a guaranteed category, knowing the height of the Qatari media and the demands of Ambassador Cuello.
The almost unaffordable costs of transport, insurance and packaging are not raised. However, there will be a catalog, with reproductions and texts, in Spanish, English and Arabic, a true lesson in Dominican art –authorized by Danilo de Santos for the central text-.
Definition of the sample. In the 20th century - with the exception of Chassériau and Desangles - exhibitors moved from sure promise to recognized maturity and mastery.
Still, they maintain their dominance, an open stylistic definition, a diversified chromatic-formal language, mostly without a split between figuration and abstraction.
The virtuosity of drawing is transmitted in emblematic paintings of art history: we notice the song of color, the energy of the brushstroke, the "tessitura" of the paste. The vigor, the spirituality, the fluidity combined permanently seduce, and the interest is renewed before each painting.
Both the Dominican teachers by birth and the “Dominicanized” immigrants, without discarding the universal academic characteristics, refer us to nature and miscegenation, traditions and national identities, along with personal elements and mythologies, that is, a plural proposal, from technique to metaphor pictorial.
If you dig into more common denominators, the selected masters evolved from tropical realism to the lines of expressionism, emotion, and vehemence. Nor does Creole surrealism evade that imprint, as organic as it is constructive.
Place of the exhibition. "Republic of Color" will be presented in a privileged and unique place, the Katara Cultural Village, also called the Village of Culture and Creation.
This very active and highly reputable center, a small city within the city, partly conceived for the 2022 World Cup, combines museums, galleries, workshops, newly built houses - there is an Opera House -, between narrow streets and spaces open, plus a spectacular Mosque and Amphitheater.
