MONTEVIDEO (Sputnik) — Murió el reconocido pintor, dibujante y escultor colombiano Fernando Botero a los 91 años a causa de complicaciones derivadas de una neumonía, informó primero la prensa local y luego confirmó el presidente, Gustavo Petro.
"Ha muerto Fernando Botero, el pintor de nuestras tradiciones y defectos, el pintor de nuestras virtudes. El pintor de nuestra violencia y de la paz. De la paloma mil veces desechada y mil veces puesta en su trono", escribió el presidente en su cuenta de la red social X, antes Twitter.
La local W radio informó que Botero falleció en su casa del principado de Mónaco tras estar internado por una neumonía, tratamiento que decidió continuar en su casa.
La hija del artista, Lina Botero, confirmó la muerte de su padre en esta radio y detalló que su padre "estuvo los últimos seis días muy delicado de salud porque había desarrollado una pulmonía y a los 91 años es difícil que se pueda recuperar de esto, pero afortunadamente los médicos estuvieron muy pendientes de él" y ella pudo acompañarlo de forma permanente.
"Se fue en paz, murió tranquilamente. Estábamos mi hija y yo con él, agarrados de la mano, y dio su último suspiro y se fue en paz. Tuvo una vida tan extraordinaria, se fue con Sofía, con el amor de su vida, quien murió también este año (...) pudo trabajar hasta el último día y pintaba en su casa. Estoy viendo los últimos dibujos que hizo hasta hace cinco días, tuvo una suerte increíble", añadió su hija.
Botero nació en Medellín (noroeste) el 19 de abril de 1932 y su trayectoria se forjó a lo largo de 75 años. En 1962 comenzó a ser reconocido de forma internacional, cuando hizo su primera exposición en el Milwaukee Art Center en Wisconsin, EEUU, recibida positivamente por los críticos del sector en la época.
Su hija contó a W Radio que pese a llevar varios años con párkinson, Botero pintaba todos los días cuatro horas en su estudio y que "la creatividad lo acompañó hasta el último día de su vida".
En sus inicios, Botero realizó ilustraciones para el diario local El Colombiano (Antioquia). En 1951 viajó a Bogotá y en la capital despegó su carrera al realizar las dos primeras exposiciones individuales de sus obras.
Años después viajó a Europa, donde su primera parada fue en Barcelona, España, y luego se radicó en Madrid, ciudad en la que ingresó a la Real Academia de Arte de San Fernando. Posteriormente, recorrió París, Francia; y Florencia, Italia; donde se inscribió a la Academia de San Marcos para continuar sus estudios.
Tras su fama y reconocimiento internacional por sus reconocidas obras, pinturas, esculturas y dibujos de figuras voluminosas, para muchos, Botero es el artista colombiano más grande en la historia del país.

MONTEVIDEO (Sputnik) - The renowned Colombian painter, draftsman and sculptor Fernando Botero died at the age of 91 due to complications derived from pneumonia, the local press first reported and then the president, Gustavo Petro, confirmed.
"Fernando Botero has died, the painter of our traditions and defects, the painter of our virtues. The painter of our violence and peace. Of the dove a thousand times discarded and a thousand times placed on its throne," the president wrote in his social network account X, formerly Twitter.
Local W radio reported that Botero died at his home in the principality of Monaco after being hospitalized for pneumonia, a treatment that he decided to continue at his home.
The artist's daughter, Lina Botero, confirmed her father's death on this radio and explained that her father "was in very poor health for the last six days because he had developed pneumonia and at 91 years old it is difficult for him to recover from this. but fortunately the doctors were very attentive to him" and she was able to accompany him permanently.
"He left in peace, he died peacefully. My daughter and I were with him, holding hands, and he took his last breath and left in peace. He had such an extraordinary life, he left with Sofía, with the love of his life , who also died this year (...) was able to work until the last day and painted at home. I'm looking at the last drawings he made until five days ago, he was incredibly lucky," added his daughter.
Botero was born in Medellín (northwest) on April 19, 1932 and his career was forged over 75 years. In 1962 he began to be recognized internationally, when he had his first exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Center in Wisconsin, USA, received positively by critics in the sector at the time.
His daughter told W Radio that despite having suffered from Parkinson's for several years, Botero painted for four hours every day in his studio and that "creativity accompanied him until the last day of his life."
At the beginning, Botero made illustrations for the local newspaper El Colombiano (Antioquia). In 1951 he traveled to Bogotá and in the capital his career took off by holding the first two individual exhibitions of his works.
Years later he traveled to Europe, where his first stop was in Barcelona, Spain, and then he settled in Madrid, the city where he entered the Royal Academy of Art of San Fernando. Later, he toured Paris, France; and Florence, Italy; where he enrolled at the Academy of San Marcos to continue his studies.
After his fame and international recognition for his renowned works, paintings, sculptures and drawings of voluminous figures, for many, Botero is the greatest Colombian artist in the history of the country.
