Exposición temporal de la colección de arte dominicano de la Dirección General de Aduanas en el Marco del Latin American Fashion Summit.
La Presencia de una importante selección de 31 obras de la Colección de Aduanas en la Ciudad Colonial, se conforma en un hito, ya que es la primera vez que se presentan en Santo Domingo y fuera del inmueble que las conserva, resguarda y difunde. Por primera vez podrán observarse y disfrutarse en la Capilla de los Remedios, museográfica y curatorialmente desplegadas, dialogando directamente con el público en una maravillosa capilla del siglo XVI.

Lo que nos motiva y sumerge a reflexionar con relación a la historia, el arte y el coleccionismo.
El hombre ha hecho del arte una de las manifestaciones más universales de la cultura. El arte es uno de los fenómenos culturales de mayor universalidad, porque se encuentra en todos los pueblos, quiere decir que obedece a una exigencia profunda del espíritu.
El arte es el testigo fiel del hombre sobre la tierra, dibujamos y pintamos antes de saber escribir o de conocer las matemáticas. Hay una necesidad inherente de rodearnos de la belleza, y pienso que es la estética lo que nos conecta con lo sublime, con lo etéreo, con la espiritualidad, lo que nos hace inmortales o eternos.
Han existido pueblos sin escritura, con poca aptitud filosófica, pero no se ha dado ningún pueblo ajeno al arte. Según cada época, el quehacer artístico ha dejado testimonios a través del tiempo, de la presencia de la humanidad, del devenir de la historia, como testigo fiel del pasado, de lo que acontece en el presente y de lo que podremos interpretar que será el futuro.
La Cultura de un individuo que ignora el arte, o que posea solo conocimientos imprecisos e insuficientes de él, además de poseer una cultura fraccionada, da como resultado que el individuo carezca de las oportunidades que el arte da a la expansión del espíritu. Y estoy segura de que Don Miguel Cocco dimensionaba y conocía el poder del arte para una sociedad transformadora, educada y en conexión con la trascendencia del espíritu.
La Colección de la Dirección General de Aduanas nace con la finalidad de crear una memoria histórica, pausada, pensada, curatorialmente seleccionada, exquisita, fluida, categórica, contundente, valiosa, representada, no tan solo por los mejores artistas plásticos de la República Dominicana, sino de sus mejores obras.
Las colecciones se conforman por el placer de poseer, de disfrutar, de invertir, sin embargo, en el caso de la Colección de Aduanas, atesora el patrimonio dominicano, la historia desde muchas perspectivas, estilos y técnicas, desde la etapa republicana hasta el siglo XXI, a través de una labor curatorial consciente, especializada, de conocimiento profundo de la historia del arte dominicano por la Fundación del Patrimonio Cultural de Aduanas, creada en el año 2007, conformando una colección prácticamente sin ausencias y rica en obras interesantes y valiosas desde todos los puntos de vista, convirtiéndose en una de las colecciones más importantes del país, por lo que la fundación asume la responsabilidad de esta colección; de hecho, hay una larga lista de responsabilidades: la de protegerlas y conservarlas, catalogarlas, interpretarlas, difundirlas, y crear espacios adecuados para producir conocimiento dentro de un contexto cultural más amplio.
En este contexto que se desarrolla “Presencia”, la exposición que asume grandes retos, ya que debe representar magníficamente la Colección de la Dirección General de Aduanas conformada por 600 obras de arte, en tan sólo 31 obras curatorialmente seleccionadas. Reto que se cumple cabalmente, ya que “Presencia” muestra la importancia del patrimonio cultural custodiado por Aduanas, presentando una línea de tiempo de la historia del arte de nuestro país, de mano de los maestros de la plástica dominicana y obras de arte que representan cada período, iniciando con los maestros Yoryi Morel y Jaime Colson, y los cuales, en un momento tan temprano como 1932, están creando las bases de lo que será el arte dominicano.
La creación de la Escuela de Bellas Artes en 1939, la cual se desarrolla con los artistas europeos que formaban parte de la migración europea que tanto aportaron a nuestro país, y los cuales escapan de la Guerra Civil española y de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Son ellos los que impulsan el movimiento artístico dominicano, siendo los primeros maestros y directores de la Escuela de Bellas Artes, como fueron José Gausachs, José Vela Zanetti, George Hausdorf, entre otros.
La plástica de características dominicanas nace con el primer grupo de artistas formados en la Escuela de Bellas Artes y se conforman en un grupo que denuncia las atrocidades y el dolor del pueblo dominicano durante la dictadura trujillista y posteriormente la lucha y el derrocamiento de la misma, conformados en la Generación del 60, de este grupo podremos conocer las obras de Paul Gudicelli, Gilberto Hernández Ortega , Gaspar Mario Cruz , Iván Tovar, José Rincón Mora, Asdrúbal Domínguez, Luichi Martínez Richiez , Clara Ledesma, Domingo Liz, Ramón Oviedo, y muchos más que podremos conocer en esta exhibición.
La década de los 70s se caracteriza por un deseo no tanto político, ni social, ni antropológico sino de estética, de investigación, de insertarse en el mercado del arte, de manifestaciones artísticas de múltiples posibilidades, donde la libertad de la democracia se explora y se vive, y los artistas representados en esta muestra son Alberto Ulloa y Manuel Montilla.
Los 80s y los 90s son una explosión de creatividad en todos los ámbitos y sobre todo el de las artes plásticas, el neoliberalismo y la globalización, la fusión de tendencias mundiales con las raíces y características de la cultura dominicana, logran colocar a nuestros artistas en la escena mundial, volviéndose a los orígenes del arte dominicano de luchar y abogar por causas que en estas décadas resultan ser de temática no sólo dominicana sino mundial, como en la obra de Julio Valdez, se refleja los convulso de finales del siglo XX y la obra de Radhamés Mejía que se desdobla en mitos ancestrales y cósmicos, en personajes que vinculan el pasado y el presente del Caribe.
El siglo XXI irrumpe en artistas que dominan el ámbito internacional de manera tal que se reconocen como caribeños, antillanos, pero con un lenguaje universal, no necesitan traductores visuales ni intelectuales, ya que, a través de códigos, se presenta la más cruda realidad de la sociedad actual, injusta, sexualizada, superficial y de violencia social. En “Presencia” Jorge Pineda y Sherezade García, presentan realidades de la sociedad dominicana que se traspolan a realidades universales como la enajenación, el abuso infantil y la migración.
Exhortamos a que sea, la exposición colectiva “Presencia”, la primera de muchas exposiciones de la Colección de la Dirección General de Aduanas en la República Dominicana y que estas aporten la experiencia real, matérica, sensorial y lúdica, a la estética, la sensibilidad, la espiritualidad de nuestro pueblo, de nuestro país y de nuestra identidad.

The Presence of an important selection of 31 works from the Customs Collection in the Colonial City, is a milestone, since it is the first time that they are presented in Santo Domingo and outside the building that preserves, protects and disseminates them. For the first time, they can be observed and enjoyed in the Chapel of Remedies, displayed museo graphically and curatorially, in direct dialogue with the public in a wonderful 16th-century chapel.

What motivates and submerges us to reflect in relation to history, art and collecting.
Man has made art one of the most universal manifestations of culture. Art is one of the most universal cultural phenomena, because it is found in all peoples, which means that it obeys a deep demand of the spirit.
Art is the faithful witness of man on earth, we draw and paint before knowing how to write or knowing mathematics. There is an inherent need to surround ourselves with beauty, and I think it is aesthetics that connects us with the sublime, with the ethereal, with spirituality, which makes us immortal or eternal.
There have been peoples without writing, with little philosophical aptitude, but there has not been any people outside of art. According to each era, artistic work has left testimonies over time, of the presence of humanity, of the evolution of history, as a faithful witness of the past, of what happens in the present and of what we can interpret as the future. future.
The Culture of an individual who ignores art, or who has only imprecise and insufficient knowledge of it, in addition to having a divided culture, results in the individual lacking the opportunities that art gives to the expansion of the spirit. And I am sure that Don Miguel Cocco dimensioned and knew the power of art for a transformative, educated society and in connection with the transcendence of the spirit.
The Collection of the General Directorate of Customs was born with the purpose of creating a historical memory, slow, thoughtful, curatorially selected, exquisite, fluid, categorical, forceful, valuable, represented, not only by the best plastic artists of the Dominican Republic, but of his best works.
The collections are made up of the pleasure of owning, enjoying, and investing; however, in the case of the Customs Collection, it treasures Dominican heritage, history from many perspectives, styles, and techniques, from the Republican period to the 19th century. XXI, through a conscious, specialized curatorial work, of deep knowledge of the history of Dominican art by the Customs Cultural Heritage Foundation, created in 2007, forming a collection practically without absences and rich in interesting and valuable works from all points of view, becoming one of the most important collections in the country, so the foundation assumes responsibility for this collection; in fact, there is a long list of responsibilities: that of protecting and conserving them, cataloging them, interpreting them, disseminating them, and creating adequate spaces to produce knowledge within a broader cultural context.
In this context that "Presence" is developed, the exhibition that assumes great challenges, since it must magnificently represent the Collection of the General Directorate of Customs made up of 600 works of art, in only 31 curatorially selected works. A challenge that is fully met, since "Presence" shows the importance of the cultural heritage guarded by Customs, presenting a timeline of the history of art in our country, hand in hand with the masters of Dominican plastic arts and works of art that they represent. each period, starting with the masters Yoryi Morel and Jaime Colson, and who, as early as 1932, are creating the foundations of what will be Dominican art.
The creation of the School of Fine Arts in 1939, which is developed with European artists who were part of the European migration that contributed so much to our country, and who escaped from the Spanish Civil War and World War II. They are the ones who drive the Dominican artistic movement, being the first teachers and directors of the School of Fine Arts, such as José Gausachs, José Vela Zanetti, George Hausdorf, among others.

The 80s and 90s are an explosion of creativity in all areas and especially that of the plastic arts, neoliberalism and globalization, the fusion of world trends with the roots and characteristics of Dominican culture, manage to place our artists in the world scene, returning to the origins of the Dominican art of fighting and advocating for causes that in these decades turn out to be not only Dominican but world-themed, as in the work of Julio Valdez, reflecting the convulsions of the late 20th century and the work of Rhadamés Mejía that unfolds in ancestral and cosmic myths, in characters that link the past and the present of the Caribbean.
The 21st century breaks into artists who dominate the international arena in such a way that they recognize themselves as Caribbean, Antillean, but with a universal language, they do not need visual or intellectual translators, since, through codes, the harshest reality of the current society, unfair, sexualized, superficial and of social violence. In "Presence" Jorge Pineda and Scheherazade García present realities of Dominican society that are transposed to universal realities such as alienation, child abuse, and migration.
We urge that the collective exhibition "Presencia" be the first of many exhibitions of the Collection of the General Directorate of Customs in the Dominican Republic and that these contribute the real, material, sensory and playful experience, to aesthetics, sensitivity , the spirituality of our people, our country and our identity.
