Rudy F. Weisenberg y Rodman Primack hablan sobre la reciente apertura de su galería y espacio de trabajo, enfocado al diseño mexicano e internacional: AGO Proyect.
Probar suerte abriendo una nueva galería en un edificio llamado Karma puede significar dos cosas: estás tratando de compensar esta energía de alguna forma o como Rudy F. Weissenberg y Rodman Primack, crees en el diseño mexicano y en el talento de toda una regiòn.
Un elevador moderno nos conduce por las entrañas de un edificio más maduro hacia el piso 5. Al abrirse las puertas, se revela una luminosa galería conformada, esta vez, por una exposición de sillas diseñadas por el taller de arquitectura LANZA Atelier, la cual estará abierta al público hasta el 16 de noviembre.
Rudy y Rodman, cofundadores de AGO Projects, se acercan, se sientan en unas sillas de la exhibición y comienza la entrevista. Rodman tiene una amplia trayectoria en el mercado del arte y el diseño, pasando por Christie’s en el departamento de Latinoamérica, luego trabajando con el arquitecto Peter Marino, junto a marcas de lujo como Dior o Louis Vuitton, donde empezó a enfocarse en el diseño de interiores. “Más adelante me convertí en director de la casa de subastas Phillips en Londres y después me fui a la Galería Gagosian, una de las más importantes del mundo en términos de arte contemporáneo, y antes de dedicarme de lleno a AGO Projects, fui director de la feria de diseño Design Miami/”.
Rudy, por su parte, es financiero de formación y trabajó gran parte de su vida en medios, principalmente en televisión, pero hasta hace poco dio un giro significativo a su vocación e intereses. “Hace 3 años me fui a la escuela de diseño de Harvard, obteniendo un posgrado en Historia del Diseño. Mi gusto por el arte y el diseño siempre ha estado presente, sólo que se presentaba de forma paralela a mi vida profesional. Después de haber tomado esta desición, fue cuando me planteé formar parte de este proyecto y aquí estoy”.
México es un país que se destaca por sus constantes aportaciones a distintos ámbitos e industrias, incluyendo la del diseño. “Elegimos México como sede para la galería, en principio por el cariño que ambos le tenemos al país, y porque conocemos la calidad y el talento de muchos diseñadores nacionales y la conversación que se ha creado con otros contextos a nivel internacional. México tiene una historia en términos de diseño que inicia desde la época prehispánica y continúa hasta la contemporaneidad. Sin embargo, a diferencia de otros países como Francia y Alemania, por ejemplo, en los que hubo un nivel de industrialización que permitió el establecimiento de ciertas corrientes y escuelas, en México el diseño está construido a base de gestos de enorme calidad pero siempre aislados. Por esto queremos hacer nuestra aportación y mostrar el verdadero potencial del diseño mexicano desde un nivel más formal, cosa que ya sucede desde hace años pero a la que queremos contribuir desde nuestro espacio”, concluye Rodman.
Gracias al apoyo y al ímpetu que les contagió la arquitecta Tatiana Bilbao, quien también tiene un espacio en el edificio Karma, Rudy y Rodman, junto a Santiago Ortiz Monasterio, decidieron emprender este proyecto. “AGO Projects se compone de una galería de 10X10, un cuadrado perfecto; a un lado se encuentran nuestras oficinas, donde desarrollamos proyectos personales de manera paralela a los que se materializan en la galería. El objetivo es crear un proyecto interdisciplinario enfocado en el diseño y en lo hecho a mano, es decir, desde lo más avanzado en tecnología hasta de carácter más artesanal”, declara Rudy.
¿Qué cualidades debe tener un galerista? Rudy y Rodman coinciden en la respuesta: “la pasión es determinante para emprender cualquier proyecto. Sin embargo, el galerista siempre debe ir un poco más allá, pensar la relación que tienen las obras no sólo con las artistas sino con los espectadores, con los posibles compradores y dentro del ecosistema global del diseño. Socializar desde este enfoque es determinante para saber qué piezas reunir, qué exhibiciones llevar a cabo en el momento preciso y obtener así buenos resultados”.
La galería AGO Projects ya tiene calendarizadas diversas exhibiciones temporales de diseñadores y artistas nacionales e internacionales para lo que resta de este año y lo que sigue del próximo, las cuales estarán abiertas al público en un horario de 10am a 6pm en el quinto piso del edificio con el número 382 en la Avenida Paseo de la Reforma, en la CDMX.

A life without “Mexican” design would be a mistake
Rudy F. Weisenberg and Rodman Primack talk about the recent opening of their gallery and workspace, focused on Mexican and international design: AGO Proyect.
Trying luck by opening a new gallery in a building called Karma can mean two things: you are trying to compensate for this energy in some way or like Rudy F. Weissenberg and Rodman Primack, you believe in Mexican design and the talent of an entire region.
A modern elevator leads us through the bowels of a more mature building towards the 5th floor. When the doors open, a bright gallery is revealed, this time, by an exhibition of chairs designed by the LANZA Atelier architecture workshop, which will be open to the public until November 16.
Rudy and Rodman, co-founders of AGO Projects, approach, sit in chairs of the exhibition and begin the interview. Rodman has extensive experience in the art and design market, going through Christie's in the Latin American department, then working with the architect Peter Marino, along with luxury brands such as Dior or Louis Vuitton, where he began to focus on the design of interiors “Later I became director of the Phillips auction house in London and then I went to Gagosian Gallery, one of the most important in the world in terms of contemporary art, and before devoting myself fully to AGO Projects, I was director of Design Design Fair Miami / ”.
Rudy, on the other hand, is a training financier and worked a large part of his life in media, mainly in television, but until recently he took a significant turn to his vocation and interests. “3 years ago I went to Harvard design school, obtaining a postgraduate degree in Design History. My taste for art and design has always been present, only that it was presented in parallel to my professional life. Having made this decision, it was when I considered being part of this project and here I am. ”
Mexico is a country that stands out for its constant contributions to different fields and industries, including design. “We chose Mexico as the venue for the gallery, in principle because of the love we both have for the country, and because we know the quality and talent of many national designers and the conversation that has been created with other international contexts. Mexico has a history in terms of design that begins from pre-Hispanic times and continues until contemporary times. However, unlike other countries
like France and Germany, for example, in which there was a level of industrialization that allowed the establishment of certain currents and schools, in Mexico the design is built on gestures of enormous quality but always isolated. That is why we want to make our contribution and show the true potential of Mexican design from a more formal level, something that has been going on for years but to which we want to contribute from our space, ”Rodman concludes.
Thanks to the support and the impetus that the architect Tatiana Bilbao, who also has a space in the Karma building, Rudy and Rodman, together with Santiago Ortiz Monasterio, decided to undertake this project. “AGO Projects consists of a 10X10 gallery, a perfect square; On one side are our offices, where we develop personal projects in parallel to those that materialize in the gallery. The objective is to create an interdisciplinary project focused on design and handmade, that is, from the most advanced technology to a more artisanal character, ”says Rudy.
What qualities should a gallery owner have? Rudy and Rodman agree in the answer: “passion is decisive to undertake any project. However, the gallery owner must always go a little further, think about the relationship that works have not only with artists but with spectators, with potential buyers and within the global design ecosystem. Socializing from this approach is decisive to know what pieces to gather, what exhibitions to carry out at the right time and thus obtain good results ”.
The AGO Projects gallery already has several temporary exhibitions of national and international designers and artists scheduled for the remainder of this year and what follows next, which will be open to the public from 10am to 6pm on the fifth floor of the building with the number 382 in the Paseo de la Reforma Avenue, in the CDMX.
