¿Qué si hacemos del lienzo un pulmón a través del cual podemos respirar? Un lugar donde la memoria pueda curar más allá de las imágenes conmemorativas y devocionales. Un lugar donde una lágrima se paga con una lágrima y cada pena con pena. El trabajo que he hecho en años recientes es acerca de esto. Para comenzar, propongo mi propia historia. No para sanar mi dolor, sino para entender la “pintura como un mecanismo” que me hará flotar por encima de mi propio naufragio.

El proceso de creación entendido como una experiencia purificadora del espíritu, como un acto trascendental que, al igual que el pulmón -como órgano fundamental- nos permite continuar viviendo en el acto vital de la respiración; y la obra de arte entendida como el resultado final de la liberación de los sentidos, de la entrega desmedida, del deseo de expresar, de la necesidad de comunicar… todo esto queda patente en las OBRAS RECIENTES de Arnaldo Roche-Rabell. En sus creaciones, de exquisita plasticidad y de gran carga expresiva, el artista es protagonista, narrador y testigo de su propia historia. Sus propuestas devienen en obras de tal capacidad comunicativa que captamos con certeza los mensajes, implícitos y explícitos, que encierran cada una de sus obras; fruto, acaso, del dolor generado por su drama personal y por la tragedia colectiva. La locura, la desolación causada por el último Tsunami o la muerte, son algunos de los temas que explora sin pesimismo y con gran lucidez, pues la condición humana, la realidad y lo que al ser humano le afecta y acontece, son parte del discurso, que, como hilo conductor, se convierte en el leit-motiv de los relatos y meta-relatos de su más reciente producción. Un proceso de creación que cobra sentido y culmina con la mirada y las múltiples lecturas e interpretaciones del espectador, que en ese acto de apreciación estética aporta indudablemente a las sugerencias emotivas de Arnaldo, quien al compartir con nosotros su visión del cosmos, nos hace partícipes de su manera de ser y estar en el mundo, ofreciéndonos con ello la posibilidad de “salvarnos”. Pues, en definitiva, todos –conscientes o no- somos supervivientes, en un mundo que, como actores o como espectadores, desde siempre y para siempre, usando palabras del artista, tendremos el arte para flotar por encima de nuestro propio naufragio. Por ese motivo, a propósito de su exposición en el MAM a finales del 2005 y de su valioso y vasto legado, de décadas de entrega a lo que fuera su pasión y su modo de entender la realidad, desde el lado de quien mira y de quien admira, le agradecimos por compartir con nosotros su visión; y por permitirnos, a nosotros también, entender el arte como un mecanismo, como una vía “para salvarnos”. ARNALDO ROCHE-RABELL (1955-2018): IN MEMORIAM
(Text recovered and modified with regard to the exhibition of his recent works in the MAM)
What if we make the canvas a lung through which we can breathe? A place where memory can heal beyond commemorative and devotional images. A place where a tear is paid with a tear and each penalty with pain. The work that I have done in recent years is about this. To begin, I propose my own story. Not to heal my pain, but to understand the "painting as a mechanism" that will make me float above my own shipwreck.

The process of creation understood as a purifying experience of the spirit, as a transcendental act that, like the lung -as a fundamental organ- allows us to continue living in the vital act of breathing; and the work of art understood as the final result of the liberation of the senses, the excessive devotion, the desire to express, the need to communicate ... all this is clear in the recent works of Arnaldo Roche-Rabell. In his creations, of exquisite plasticity and of great expressive load, the artist is protagonist, narrator and witness of his own history. His proposals become works of such communicative capacity that we grasp with certainty the messages, implicit and explicit, that enclose each one of his works; fruit, perhaps, of the pain generated by his personal drama and collective tragedy. The madness, the desolation caused by the last Tsunami or death, are some of the issues he explores without pessimism and with great lucidity, because the human condition, reality and what affects human beings and happens, are part of the speech , which, as a common thread, becomes the leit-motiv of the stories and meta-stories of his most recent production. A process of creation that acquires meaning and culminates with the view and the multiple readings and interpretations of the viewer, which in that act of aesthetic appreciation undoubtedly contributes to the emotional suggestions of Arnaldo, who, by sharing his vision of the cosmos with us, makes us sharers of his way of being and being in the world, offering us the possibility of "saving ourselves". Well, all in all, conscious or not, we are survivors, in a world that, as actors or as spectators, always and forever, using the words of the artist, we will have the art to float over our own shipwreck. For that reason, on the subject of his exhibition at the MAM at the end of 2005 and his valuable and vast legacy, from decades of dedication to what was his passion and his way of understanding reality, from the side of the person who looks and who admires, we thank you for sharing your vision with us; and for allowing us, too, to understand art as a mechanism, as a way "to save us".
