En 2015, la Fundación Diario Libre convocó un concurso de Arte Contemporáneo para abrir una nueva vía a los jóvenes artistas para darse a conocer. El Concurso tiene, además, un ingrediente con doble intención: los finalistas ven sus obras expuestas en una de las mejores galerías de Santo Domingo, Arte Berri, y las que no obtienen algún premio en metálico están a la venta. Invertir en Arte no es fácil, pero hacer una pequeña colección, poco a poco, es apasionante. Estas obras están ya “avaladas” por un jurado de expertos y serán una muestra de lo que los jóvenes artistas dominicanos están trabajando.
Podríamos pasar horas, días, meses discutiendo aspectos filosóficos y conceptuales sobre Arte, Contemporáneo, sobre arte joven...Es lo bueno y divertido del Arte. Lo importante es que los jóvenes encuentren espacios en los que dar a conocer su obra, medios que los pongan en contacto con galeristas y coleccionistas, formas de hacer su primera (o segunda o tercera) exposición, situaciones en las que trascender su círculo, ventanas por las que mostrar su creatividad.
Algunas épocas han exigido compromiso intelectual al artista, otras lo han protegido con mecenazgos históricos, regímenes políticos los han utilizado, silenciado o domesticado. Hoy, el mercado y una sociedad en transición los mira con intereses encontrados. Este espacio que la Fundación Diario Libre abrió es una invitación a entender, ver, tocar, preguntar a los jóvenes artistas qué les inspira y cómo lo están expresando.
Ser artista joven no es fácil en ningún país. Aquí tampoco. Los espacios dedicados a la cultura no se arriesgan fácilmente y los grandes nombres, los consagrados, tienen siempre prioridad. Este concurso nació para abrir las puertas a una primera exposición y que el espíritu de innovación de un periódico joven como Diario Libre fuera el vehículo para mostrarse.
En la 4ta. Edición del premio en 2019, más de 115 jóvenes que se presentaron, han concursado con técnicas muy diferentes, temas hasta contradictorios y se identifican con artistas muy disímiles. Pero todos tienen en común la seriedad con que abordan su vocación, las ganas de que su llamado no sea transitorio, los deseos de aprender y evolucionar. Todos quieren vivir del Arte porque viven para el Arte.
En este tiempo en que es fácil dejarse arrastrar por un mundo incierto, en el que desde el atasco de la mañana hasta la situación política nos crispa, el Arte es un refugio para el espíritu.
De los 115 artistas que se pres entaron fueron seleccionados 34 ganadores y tres premiados. Podría resumirse así la culminación de la cuarta edición del Premio Diario Libre de Arte Contemporáneo.
Los 34 ganadores habían presentado 37 obras que ya han tomado por asalto las salas de la galería Arte Berri y que son la muestra y la prueba de que los jóvenes artistas dominicanos están trabajando mucho y bien.
El Jurado
Esa es la primera impresión que se llevan consigo Véronique Chagnon Burke y Melanie Reim. Jurados internacionales del DLAC. Véronique forma parte de la división de Educación de la casa de subastas Christie’s, y Melanie es la Decana Asociada de la Escuela de Arte y Diseño en el Fashion Institute of Technology en Nueva York. Ambas cuentan con una trayectoria profesional imposible de resumir en estas cortas líneas y que se puede consultar en la página web del premio DLAC.
La ganadora
La obra ganadora, de la autoría de Anabelle Lucas, es un esfuerzo que la artista ha hecho para reclamar que las mujeres asesinadas no sean una fría estadística en las páginas policiales de los medios de comunicación o las redes sociales. Todos, parece decir la autora, tenemos cerca, en nuestra intimidad una víctima o una potencial víctima.
El tema de la violencia, hacia las mujeres o hacia los niños, está presente en varias de las obras finalistas. Tras el cristal, de Enmanuel Peguero, fue una de las más comentadas entre el público y es un referente también a una niñez robada y lejana.
Nominaciones
Las dos nominaciones, premiadas con 50,000 pesos cayeron esta edición también del lado femenino. Yocelin Ramírez con su Espacio paleolítico y Yamilé Suero, con una obra intitulada reflexionan sobre la soledad y la mujer, sobre el pensamiento y la nostalgia, con dos piezas de gran plasticidad y ágil empleo de los materiales.
La decisión, como bien señaló Melanie Reim, fue muy difícil y las discusiones del jurado se tomaron bastante más horas que en otras ediciones. Lo completaban, además de las dos profesionales antes citadas, Rosángela Pellerano, de la Fundación Diario Libre, Bingene Armenteros, de Arte Berri, y Fernando Casanova, autor del blog Arte Libre de Diario Libre.
Ganadores
Como bien expresó Bingene Armenteros al tomar la palabra, todos los artistas finalistas son ya ganadores: para algunos, esta es su primera exposición, varios ya han vendido su pieza a coleccionistas privados y todos han sido evaluados por un jurado de reconocido nivel nacional e internacional.
Este, al de poner en contacto a los artistas jóvenes con los actores del mercado del arte (críticos, galeristas, compradores, público en general) es uno de los objetivos principales que se marcó la Fundación Diario Libre cuando se planteó este certamen. Superar esas barreras iniciales, a veces reservadas solo a los artistas consagrados y poner los medios de comunicación del grupo, al servicio de su promoción.

In 2015, the Diario Libre Foundation convened a contest of Contemporary Art to open a new way for young artists to make themselves known. The Contest also has an ingredient with a double intention: the finalists see their works exhibited in one of the best galleries in Santo Domingo, Arte Berri, and those that do not obtain any cash prize are for sale. Investing in Art is not easy, but making a small collection, little by little, is exciting. These works are already “endorsed” by a jury of experts and will be a sample of what young Dominican artists are working on.
We could spend hours, days, months discussing philosophical and conceptual aspects about Art, Contemporary, about young art ... It's the good and fun of Art. The important thing is that young people find spaces in which to publicize their work, means that put them in contact with gallery owners and collectors, ways of making their first (or second or third) exhibition, situations in which to transcend their circle, windows Why show your creativity.
Some times have demanded intellectual commitment to the artist, others have protected him with historical patronage, political regimes have used them, silenced or domesticated. Today, the market and a society in transition look at them with mixed interests. This space that the Diario Libre Foundation opened is an invitation to understand, see, touch, ask young artists what inspires them and how they are expressing it.
Being a young artist is not easy in any country. Here neither. The spaces dedicated to the culture do not risk easily and the great names, the consecrated ones, always have priority. This contest was born to open the doors to a first exhibition and that the spirit of innovation of a young newspaper like Diario Libre was the vehicle to be displayed.
In the 4th. Edition of the award in 2019, more than 115 young people who presented themselves, have competed with very different techniques, even contradictory themes and identify with very different artists. But all have in common the seriousness with which they address their vocation, the desire that their call is not transitory, the desire to learn and evolve. Of the 115 artists who appeared, 34 winners and three winners were selected. The culmination of the fourth edition of the Free Daily Contemporary Art Award could be summarized.
The 34 winners had presented 37 works that have already taken by assault the rooms of the Arte Berri gallery and that are the show and proof that young Dominican artists are working hard and well.
The judge
That is the first impression that Véronique Chagnon Burke and Melanie Reim take with them. International juries of the DLAC. Véronique is part of the Education division of the Christie’s auction house, and Melanie is the Associate Dean of the School of Art and Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Both have a career that is impossible to summarize in these short lines and can be found on the DLAC award website.
The winner
The winning work, authored by Anabelle Lucas, is an effort that the artist has made to claim that the murdered women are not a cold statistic in the police pages of the media or social networks. All, the author seems to say, we have a victim or a potential victim in our privacy.
The issue of violence, towards women or towards children, is present in several of the finalist works. After the crystal, by Enmanuel Peguero, it was one of the most commented among the public and is also a reference to a stolen and distant childhood.
Nominations

Winners
As Bingene Armenteros said when taking the floor, all the finalist artists are already winners: for some, this is their first exhibition, several have already sold their piece to private collectors and all have been evaluated by a jury of recognized national and international level .
This, to put young artists in contact with the actors of the art market (critics, gallery owners, buyers, public in general) is one of the main objectives that the Free Daily Foundation was marked when this event was raised. Overcome these initial barriers, sometimes reserved only for consecrated artists and put the group's media at the service of their promotion.
