A través de sus 76 años de historia, el Instituto Cultural Dominico Americano, como pionero, ha mantenido su misión de estimular, afirmar y sostener la cultura. Es la promesa de la actual gestión ofrecer a la colectividad, un espacio reservado para el disfrute de manifestaciones de artistas nacionales e internacionales y que facilite oportunidades a los propios de revelar sus más exquisitas creaciones. Perpetuamos esta promesa iniciando una serie de exposiciones artísticas, materializándola con la apertura de la muestra “Momentous” de la mano del virtuoso artista Alejandro Asencio, con piezas de lenguaje crítico y efusivo, de gran concepto y que mantienen su anchura estética, celosamente curadas por la magnífica visión de la Sra.

Alejandro Asencio: la presencia del paisaje
en el discurso estético

Hace algunos años, cuando presenté la exposición Percepciones, la muestra inicial de Alejandro Asencio (2003) ─egresados de la promoción de los noventa de la ENAV─, me pregunté si el arte dominicano se encaminaba hacia una definición determinante; o si acaso se encontraba en ese cruce de caminos donde se pierde la visión del discurso y los conceptos se vuelcan hacia búsquedas anárquicas. Mi pregunta, soterrada, sospechosa, me la formulé sin esperar respuestas en virtud de que la cronología orgánica de nuestro arte rondaba las obras de los escasos maestros que, aún, se encontraban en etapas productivas (Cándido Bidó (1936-2011), Ramón Oviedo (1924-2015), Guillo Pérez(1926-2014), Domingo Liz (1931-2013), Fernando ─Papo─ Peña Defilló (1926-2016), Jorge Severino (1935-2020), Ada Balcácer (1930-), etc.), sin otearse en el horizonte plástico del país asomos de asombros y sorpresas, salvo las promesas vislumbradas en los egresados de la ENAV en los ochenta. Sin embargo, encontré cierto alivio frente a mi interrogante al detenerme frente a las realizaciones de Asencio, porque leí en aquellas pinturas una real preocupación por integrar a nuestro arte la noción de un lenguaje expansivo, crítico y reflexivo. Trece años después (2016), Alejandro Asencio expuso una quincena de obras que bautizó con el nombre de «Al otro lado del jardín», donde, en una hibridación que idealiza, provoca y subvierte el paisaje del mediano sur dominicano, deconstruye a través de un «land art» con una visión muy particular del paisaje, una flora visionada desde la asfixia agónica de la ecología, devolviendonos el disfrute de su permanencia.
Ahora, Asensio, en 18 trabajos realizados en acrílica sobre tela ─agrupados bajo el nombre de Momentous─ prosigue el discurso (un maravilloso «continuum») del concepto visual emprendido en el 2016, pero enlazándolo a una dimensión estética donde confluyen lo cognitivo del paisaje, por un lado, con el goce de un lenguaje pictórico donde lo figurativo supervive en eso que Ludwig Wittgenstein llama un «sistema de referencia» (1921).

Throughout its 76-year history, the Dominican American Cultural Institute, as a pioneer, has maintained its mission to stimulate, affirm, and sustain culture. It is the promise of the current management to offer the community a space reserved for the enjoyment of manifestations of national and international artists and to provide opportunities for their own to reveal their most exquisite creations. We perpetuate this promise by initiating a series of artistic exhibitions, materializing it with the opening of the exhibition "Momentous" by the virtuous artist Alejandro Asencio, with pieces of critical and effusive language, of great concept and that maintain their aesthetic breadth, jealously curated by the magnificent vision of Mrs.

Alejandro Asencio: the presence of the landscape
in aesthetic discourse

A few years ago, when I presented the exhibition Perceptions, the initial show by Alejandro Asencio (2003) ─graduates from the ENAV class of the 1990s─, I wondered if Dominican art was heading towards a decisive definition; or if perhaps he was at that crossroads where the vision of the discourse is lost and the concepts turn towards anarchic searches. My hidden, suspicious question was formulated to myself without waiting for answers because the organic chronology of our art revolved around the works of the few masters who were still in their productive stages (Cándido Bidó (1936-2011), Ramón Oviedo (1924-2015), Guillo Pérez (1926-2014), Domingo Liz (1931-2013), Fernando ─Papo─ Peña Defilló (1926-2016), Jorge Severino (1935-2020), Ada Balcácer (1930-), etc. .), without peeking into the plastic horizon of the country hints of astonishment and surprises, except for the promises glimpsed in the ENAV graduates in the eighties. However, I found some relief from my question when I stopped in front of Asencio's works, because I read in those paintings a real concern to integrate into our art the notion of an expansive, critical and reflective language. Thirteen years later (2016), Alejandro Asencio exhibited fifteen works that he named "Al otro lado del jardín", where, in a hybridization that idealizes, provokes and subverts the landscape of the Dominican mid-south, he deconstructs through a «land art» with a very particular vision of the landscape, a flora viewed from the agonizing suffocation of ecology, giving us back the enjoyment of its permanence.
Now, Asensio, in 18 works made in acrylic on canvas ─grouped under the name Momentous─ continues the discourse (a wonderful "continuum") of the visual concept undertaken in 2016, but linking it to an aesthetic dimension where the cognitive of the landscape converge. On the one hand, with the enjoyment of a pictorial language where the figurative survives in what Ludwig Wittgenstein calls a "reference system" (1921).
