La edición de la Bienal de Venecia de Arte de este año coincide con el aniversario de la fundación de la ciudad hace 1600 años y con la celebración de la quinta edición de MOVE Contemporáneo, una bienal organizada por la Fondazione Musei Civici para generar sinergias sobre las colecciones de arte contemporáneo de los centros que forman parte de la institución, entre ellos el Palacio Ducal.

Anselm Kiefer, uno de los artistas alemanes más relevantes de nuestro tiempo, presenta su trabajo en la «Sala dello Scrutinio» del mencionado Palacio. Nacido al final de la II Guerra Mundial, en marzo de 1945, fue junto a Georg Baselitz, Richter, Polke o Immendorff uno de los artífices del renacimiento de la pintura alemana en la década de los años setenta. Frente al contexto artístico dominante del momento, el neoexpresionismo, Kiefer hizo del pasado y de los mitos de su país su fuente de inspiración, zambulléndose en la antigüedad y el medievo como respuesta a la afirmación de Adorno de que toda cultura posterior a Auschwitz era basura y la reflexión sobre lo inmediato parecía insoportable, pesada e irrelevante. Entendió Kiefer que la historia se encuentra arraigada en las leyendas y que tiene su base en una ideología difusa derivada de mundos muy distantes en el espacio y en el tiempo: no se fiaba ni de registros ni de testigos, pero sí le atraía irremediablemente lo irracional. La capacidad de empatía le ha resultado esencial a la hora de examinar lo ancestral, que continúa muy presente en su producción. En Venecia expone el conjunto «Questi scritti, quando verranno bruciati, daranno finalmente un po’ di luce», título tomado de los escritos de un filósofo veneciano, Andrea Emo. El proyecto presentado es el resultado de un trabajo realizado entre 2020 y 2021: un conjunto de pinturas creadas para exponerse en el espacio de la Sala dello Scrutinio. Un espacio marcado por su riqueza ornamental e iconográfica, así como por los tres lienzos monumentales de su techo, donde la intervención de Kiefer pretende reconocer la capacidad del arte actual para promover la reflexión sobre asuntos universales y filosóficos, a partir de la historia de la villa italiana. La invitación a Kiefer para participar en esta bienal data de 2019 y se pretendía medir la capacidad de este lugar simbólico de la República Serenissima para continuar siendo un centro de cultura viva y no solo de memoria. Kiefer dialoga ahora aquí, en la sala donde los dogos eran elegidos, con quienes fueron llamados en su tiempo por el Senado de la República para representar en las paredes de esa Sala dello Scrutinio, tras el devastador incendio de 1577, la gloria marítima y terrena de Venecia, entre ellos Pietro Bellotti y Palma el Joven. Sus obras remiten asimismo a los designios inevitables del tiempo, a la anulación del pasado representada por las pinturas ocultas, a lo efímero y a un concepto ampliamente vivo en su trabajo: la unidad trágica e irresoluble de los opuestos. Venecia es el centro de esta propuesta del alemán, pero no se nos presenta como un objeto a celebrar, sino como una gran metáfora de los lazos culturales entre Oriente y Occidente, como pretexto para sacar a la luz mitos milenarios y también para desvelar la oscuridad que es propia de nuestro tiempo.
Anselm Kiefer nace en 1945 en Donaueschingen, Alemania. Después de estudiar derecho, comienza su educación artística en Karlsruhe y luego Düsseldorf, donde estudia extraoficialmente con Joseph Beuys. Su obra ha sido expuesta y recogida por los principales museos de todo el mundo. Algunas de sus exposiciones retrospectivas recientes son "Anselm Kiefer: Heaven and Earth", en el Modern Art Museum de Fort Worth, Tejas (2005) y "Anselm Kiefer", en el Museo Guggenheim de Bilbao (2007). También en 2007, Kiefer inaugura el programa "Monumenta" del Grand Palais de París, con una enorme instalación de esculturas y pinturas especialmente diseñada para el contenedor. En 2009, dirige y diseña los decorados de "Am Anfang" [En el Principio] en la Ópera Nacional de París. En el año 2013 se hace público una nueva rama de trabajo basada en el Plan Morgenthau con dos grandes exposiciones en Gagosian de París y galerías de Nueva York. Kiefer actualmente vive y trabaja en Francia.

This year's edition of the Venice Art Biennale coincides with the anniversary of the founding of the city 1,600 years ago and with the celebration of the fifth edition of MOVE Contemporary, a biennial organized by the Fondazione Musei Civici to generate synergies on the contemporary art collections from the centers that are part of the institution, including the Ducal Palace.

Anselm Kiefer, one of the most relevant German artists of our time, presents his work in the "Sala dello Scrutinio" of the aforementioned Palace.
Born at the end of World War II, in March 1945, he was, along with Georg Baselitz, Richter, Polke and Immendorff, one of the architects of the renaissance of German painting in the 1970s.
Facing the dominant artistic context of the moment, neo-expressionism, Kiefer made the past and the myths of his country his source of inspiration, plunging into antiquity and the Middle Ages in response to Adorno's assertion that all post-Auschwitz culture was rubbish. and the reflection on the immediate seemed unbearable, heavy and irrelevant.
Kiefer understood that history is rooted in legends and that it is based on a diffuse ideology derived from worlds very distant in space and time: he did not trust records or witnesses, but he was inevitably attracted to the irrational . His capacity for empathy has been essential when examining the ancestral, which continues to be very present in his production.
In Venice he exhibits the group "Questi scritti, quando verranno bruciati, daranno finally un po' di luce", a title taken from the writings of a Venetian philosopher, Andrea Emo. The project presented is the result of work carried out between 2020 and 2021: a set of paintings created to be exhibited in the Sala dello Scrutinio space. A space marked by its ornamental and iconographic richness, as well as by the three monumental canvases on its ceiling, where Kiefer's intervention seeks to recognize the capacity of current art to promote reflection on universal and philosophical issues, based on the history of Italian village.
The invitation to Kiefer to participate in this biennial dates back to 2019 and was intended to measure the capacity of this symbolic place of the Serenissima Republic to continue being a center of living culture and not just memory.
Kiefer now converses here, in the room where the doges were elected, with those who were called in their time by the Senate of the Republic to represent on the walls of that Sala dello Scrutinio, after the devastating fire of 1577, the maritime and terrestrial glory of Venice, including Pietro Bellotti and Palma the Younger. His works also refer to the inevitable designs of time, to the annulment of the past represented by hidden paintings, to the ephemeral and to a concept that is widely alive in his work: the tragic and irresolvable unity of opposites. Venice is the center of this proposal by the German, but it is not presented to us as an object to celebrate, but as a great metaphor for the cultural ties between East and West, as a pretext to bring to light ancient myths and also to reveal the darkness which is typical of our time.
ANSELM KIEFER
Anselm Kiefer was born in 1945 in Donaueschingen, Germany. After studying law, he begins his artistic education in Karlsruhe and then Düsseldorf, where he unofficially studies with Joseph Beuys. His work has been exhibited and collected by major museums around the world. Some of his recent retrospective exhibitions are "Anselm Kiefer: Heaven and Earth" at the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas (2005) and "Anselm Kiefer" at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (2007). Also in 2007, Kiefer inaugurates the "Monumenta" program at the Grand Palais in Paris, with a huge installation of sculptures and paintings specially designed for the container. In 2009, he directs and designs the sets for "Am Anfang" [In the Beginning] at the Opéra National de Paris. In 2013, a new branch of work based on the Morgenthau Plan was made public with two major exhibitions at Gagosian in Paris and galleries in New York.
Kiefer currently lives and works in France.
