En las seis décadas de trabajo dedicado al arte, Antoni Tàpies, ahora universalmente reconocido como uno de los artistas más importantes de la segunda mitad del siglo XX, mostró siempre su preocupación por los problemas y los conflictos de la humanidad. Su pintura, de factura a menudo austera y al mismo tiempo llena de fuerza y expresividad, trata de dar con su personal iconografía, respuesta a las preguntas fundamentales del ser humano y de mostrar que la belleza y la trascendencia pueden encontrarse a menudo en los objetos más humildes.

Antoni Tàpies nace en Barcelona el 1923 en el seno de una familia de la burguesía catalana, culta y con tradición política y librera, que le transmite su amor por los libros, la lectura y la cultura en general.
Vive los desastres de la Guerra Civil española en plena adolescencia, hecho que lo marcará para siempre, y después de esta, siendo aún muy joven y afectado por una enfermedad pulmonar se ve obligado a realizar un largo periodo de reposo en un sanatorio. Tàpies aprovecha este momento para leer, reflexionar y realizar sus primeros dibujos. Entre sus lecturas se encuentra El libro del té que lo inicia en la cultura y la filosofía oriental que lo influyen y estarán siempre más presentes en su obra artística. Una vez restablecido inicia la carrera de derecho en Barcelona, pero abandona la carrera en el último curso para dedicarse plenamente a la pintura.
Sus primeras exploraciones pictóricas , marcadas aún por el Surrealismo, en la segunda mitad de los años 40 y principios de los 50, le sirven como base para la investigación de la naturaleza física de los objetos y de su materialidad. Muy pronto su trabajo se decanta por una búsqueda de nuevos parámetros expresivos donde la textura tiene un papel primordial. Pronto aparecen obras con relieves, fragmentos arrancados, laceraciones, grietas, etc. que nos remiten a los horrores de la Guerra Civil y a la vez entroncan con el arte informalista y el expresionismo abstracto americano. Más tarde, la incorporación de formas de puertas, ventanas, del cuerpo humano y de la utilización del collage y el assemblage lo llevarán a un trabajo personalísimo que le da un reconocimiento internacional.
La obra de Tàpies, hoy, se incluye en numerosas colecciones públicas y privadas como la Tate Gallery en el Reino Unido, el MOMA en New York, la Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna en Roma, el Musée de Arte Moderno y el Centro Georges Pompidou en Paris, el Stedelijk Museum de Amsterdam, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Los Ángeles, entre otros. Ha participado en la Documenta y en la Biennale de Venecia en varias ocasiones. En la última, en 1993, instaló su obra Rin-Zen en el Pabellón Español obra con la que obtuvo el León de Oro. Ha realizado numerosas exposiciones individuales en museos internacionales, en particular con retrospectivas en el Museo Guggenheim de New York (1962 y 1995), en el Musée de Arte Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1973), en la Nationals galerie en Berlin (1974), en el Luisiana Museum of Art, Dinamarca (1974) en la Hayward Gallery, Londres (1974), en el Seibu Museum of Art de Tokyo (1976) en la Albright-Knox Art Gallery de Buffalo, que más tarde viajó al Museum of Contemporary Art de Chicago, a Marion Koogler McNay Arte Institute de San Antonio (Texas), al Des Moines Art Center (Iowa), y al Museo de Arte Moderne de Montréal, Quebec, Canadá (1977), así como al Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía en Madrid (1990), entre otros.
Antoni Tàpies ha recibido numerosos honores y premios a lo largo de su vida como el Premium Imperiale que le entregó el Emperador del Japón (1990). En 1992 es nombrado Miembro Honorario de la Royal Academy of Art en Londres y de la American Academy of Art and Sciences en Cambridge, Massachusetts. El 2003 el Presidente Francés lo nombró Comandante de la Orden de la Legión de Honor Francesa.
El 1990 se inaugura la Fundació Antoni Tàpies con sede en Barcelona. Antoni Tàpies murió el 6 de febrero de 2012 a los 88 años.

In the six decades of work dedicated to art, Antoni Tàpies, now universally recognized as one of the most important artists of the second half of the 20th century, always showed his concern for the problems and conflicts of humanity. His painting, often austere and at the same time full of force and expressiveness, tries to find his personal iconography, an answer to the fundamental questions of the human being and to show that beauty and transcendence can often be found in the humblest objects.
Antoni Tàpies was born in Barcelona in 1923 into a family of the Catalan bourgeoisie, cultured and with a political and bookstore tradition, which transmitted to him their love for books, reading and culture in general.
He lived through the disasters of the Spanish Civil War in full adolescence, a fact that will mark him forever, and after this, while still very young and affected by a lung disease, he is forced to take a long period of rest in a sanatorium. Tàpies takes advantage of this moment to read, reflect and make the first drawings of him. Among his readings is The Tea Book that introduces him to the oriental culture and philosophy that influence him and will always be more present in his artistic work. Once restored, he began his law degree in Barcelona, but dropped out in his last year to dedicate himself fully to painting.
His first pictorial explorations, still marked by Surrealism, in the second half of the 1940s and early 1950s, serve as a basis for the investigation of the physical nature of objects and their materiality. Very soon his work opted for a search for new expressive parameters where texture plays a primary role. Works with reliefs, torn fragments, lacerations, cracks, etc. soon appear. that refer us to the horrors of the Civil War and at the same time connect with Informalist art and American abstract expressionism. Later, the incorporation of forms of doors, windows, the human body and the use of collage and assemblage will lead him to a highly personal work that gives him international recognition.
Today Tàpies' work is included in numerous public and private collections such as the Tate Gallery in the United Kingdom, the MOMA in New York, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, the Musée de Arte Moderno and the Georges Pompidou Center. in Paris, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.
