Lalanne: la directora de Design Miami / Basel elige sus aspectos más destacados.
La feria puede ser más pequeña de lo habitual este año, pero Jennifer Roberts dice que nunca había visto que el mercado del diseño coleccionable estuviera en tan mala salud.

"No creo que haya visto nunca que el mercado del diseño tenga este tipo de éxito independiente en mi carrera", dice Jennifer Roberts, directora ejecutiva de Design Miami / Basel con sede en Estados Unidos. El cliché de que pasar tanto tiempo mirando las mismas cuatro paredes durante la pandemia nos ha hecho a todos más conscientes del diseño de interiores suena cierto, dice Roberts. Nuestra trampa y un mercado inmobiliario premium en auge a nivel mundial han sido una bendición para el mundo del diseño de alta gama.
“En Miami, recibo una llamada casi todas las semanas de alguien que busca amueblar una casa que acaba de comprar. Preguntando ¿dónde puedo encontrar esto? ¿Quién puede diseñar el espacio que también funciona con diseño coleccionable? ”, Dice Roberts. "Hay un montón de proyectos que han comenzado en los últimos dos años para los que la gente está buscando material y creo que las subastas de diseño en marzo fueron el mayor indicador de esta fortaleza porque muchas de las piezas obtuvieron el doble de la estimación alta".
Por lo tanto, el mercado es fuerte pero, inevitablemente, organizar una feria ha sido difícil. "Estaría mintiendo si no dijera que ha sido un desafío debido a todas las consecuencias de Covid en todo el mundo, pero se está juntando muy bien", dice Roberts unas semanas antes de que Design Miami / Basel abra en Messeplatz. a Art Basel del 21 al 26 de septiembre. La feria cuenta con 26 expositores en la sección principal (frente a 43 en 2019), incluyendo Carpenters Workshop Gallery, Laffanour-Galerie Downtown, Hemmerle y Friedman Benda, mientras que 14 participan en la sección Curios y cinco en la exposición Design At Large.
Se pronostica ampliamente que habrá muchos menos visitantes internacionales (particularmente coleccionistas estadounidenses) a las ferias de Basilea este año debido a las restricciones de viaje y la molestia general de las vacunas. Pero a Roberts eso no le preocupa demasiado: “Tradicionalmente, Basilea siempre ha sido una feria eurocéntrica. Recibimos muchos visitantes de Francia, Alemania y Suiza, y varios coleccionistas me han dicho que vienen de Estados Unidos. Siempre hemos dependido un poco de ese mercado local y este año, hay cinco ferias en la Messeplatz, por lo que será un gran atractivo para el público local ”.
Roberts ha realizado algunos cambios en el diseño este año, sobre todo moviendo la exposición Design at Large arriba y reemplazandola con la instalación inmersiva de Superblue por DRIFT, también conocido como el dúo de artistas holandeses Lonneke Gordijn y Ralph Nauta, en la enorme sala de la planta baja. Titulado Shy Synchrony, el trabajo multisensorial presenta esculturas que se despliegan y se cierran, imitando cómo las flores se abren y cierran en respuesta a la luz (un fenómeno llamado nyctinasty). "Va a ser muy relajante, en cierto modo", dice Roberts. "Así que tienes este momento para respirar y experimentarlo antes de entrar a la feria".
Antes de la feria, Roberts selecciona cinco aspectos destacados del Design Miami / Basel de este año.
Estamos muy contentos de que Superblue se una a nosotros en Basilea este año, esta instalación definitivamente será un punto culminante para cualquiera que visite la feria. El trabajo de DRIFT es siempre muy atractivo y esta será la presentación a mayor escala de la serie Shylights jamás mostrada, ¡que sin duda será una que no debe perderse!
Este año tenemos dos nuevas presentaciones de joyería en la feria que me entusiasman: el debut de Carpenters Workshop Jewellery que incluye nuevos trabajos de diseñadores como Aldo Bakker y Caroline van Hoek y Hemmerle, quienes expondrán con nosotros por primera vez. Estoy asombrado por la dedicación de Hemmerle a la artesanía, sus piezas realmente cuentan una historia, como estos aretes inspirados en la tierra agrietada del desierto y los paisajes secos, pero aún así están diseñados para ser completamente portátiles.

Bailly Gallery es otra gran incorporación a nuestra feria de Basilea, y la galería suiza trae una colección excepcional de obras del siglo XX de maestros europeos como Picasso y Diego y Alberto Giacometti. La "Figura" Lampadaire modèle, de Alberto Giacometti es una pieza realmente hermosa pero funcional, tiene una forma tan delicada y una silueta elegante que es característica del trabajo del diseñador.

Claude Lalanne es una diseñadora tan icónica que siempre es un gran placer ver sus obras expuestas en nuestra feria. Este año en Basilea, la galería francesa Galerie Mitterand presentará la silla Fauteuil Bambiloba, que realmente personifica el enfoque de Lalanne para unir la escultura y el arte con objetos prácticos. Design Miami/Basel in 2019 Courtesy of Design Miami/Basel“I don't think I've ever seen the design market have this kind of standalone success in my career,” says Jennifer Roberts, the US-based chief executive of Design Miami/Basel. The cliché that spending so much time looking at the same four walls during the pandemic has made us all more interior design conscious rings true, Roberts says. Our entrapment and a globally booming premium property market have been a boon for the high-end design world. “In Miami, I get a call almost weekly now from somebody looking to furnish a home that they just purchased. Asking where can I find this? Who can design the space that also works with collectible design?”, Roberts says. “There are a ton of projects that have started in the past two years for which people are looking for material and I think the design auctions in March were the biggest indicator of this strength because many of the pieces went for twice the high estimate.” So, the market is strong but organising a fair has, inevitably, been difficult. “I'd be lying if I didn't say it's been challenging because of all of the fallout from Covid around the world, but it's coming together really nicely,” Roberts says a few weeks before Design Miami/Basel opens on the Messeplatz next to Art Basel from 21 to 26 September. The fair has 26 exhibitors in the main section (down from 43 in 2019), including Carpenters Workshop Gallery, Laffanour-Galerie Downtown, Hemmerle and Friedman Benda, while 14 take part in the Curios section and five in the Design At Large exhibition. There is widely predicted to be far fewer international visitors (particularly US collectors) to the Basel fairs this year due to travel restrictions and general vaccine hassle. But Roberts is not overly concerned by that: “Traditionally, Basel has always been a Eurocentric fair. We get a lot of visitors from France, Germany and Switzerland, and a number of collectors have told me that they're coming from the US. We've always been somewhat reliant on that local market and this year, there are five fairs on the Messeplatz, so that is going to be a big draw for the local audience.” Roberts has made a few changes to the layout this year, most notably moving the Design at Large exhibition upstairs and replacing it with Superblue’s immersive installation by DRIFT, aka the Dutch artist duo Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta, in the huge ground floor hall. Titled Shy Synchrony, the multi-sensory work features sculptures that unfurl and close up, mimicking how flowers open and close in response to light (a phenomenon called nyctinasty). “It’s going to be very calming, in a way,” Roberts says. “So you have this moment to breathe in and experience it before walking in to the fair.” Ahead of the fair, Roberts picks out five highlights from this year’s Design Miami/Basel. I am in awe of Hemmerle’s dedication to craftsmanship, their pieces really tell a story, like these earrings inspired by the cracked earth of desert and dry landscapes, but are still designed to be completely wearable. Inspired by Gaia, Greek goddess of earth, this collection is created with cashmere goat’s hair and looks to reflect the natural strength alongside the innate tenderness of the female spiritual profile. The Lampadaire modèle “Figure”, by Alberto Giacometti is a really beautiful yet functional piece, it has such a delicate form and elegant silhouette that is characteristic of the designer’s work. This year in Basel, the French gallery Galerie Mitterand will present the Fauteuil Bambiloba chair, which really epitomises Lalanne’s approach to bridging sculpture and art with practical objects. Inspired by nature, I love how Lalanne captures the delicate feel of the leaf, whilst creating a functional chair to relax into and enjoy.
