Rafael Díaz Niese, adalid del arte y la cultura

El 19 de julio se cumplieron ochenta años de la Ley Número 311, que, promulgaba la creación de la Dirección General de Bellas Artes. No hay una mejor fecha para recordar a Rafael Díaz Niese. El fue el primer e inigualado Director General de Bellas Artes, durante diez años, hasta su muerte en 1950.
Intelectual pluridisciplinario y sobresaliente entre sus pares, su aporte al desarrollo de las artes en la República Dominicana no ha tenido comparación, aunando gestión cultural como jamás se ejerció, y escritura sublime entre análisis literario e investigaciones en ciencias humanas. Y más que todo, erigió al máximo nivel la historia y crítica del arte, erudita, profunda, apasionada, orientadora, por una renovación del estilo y la temática pero en pos de un arte auténticamente dominicano.
En todas las manifestaciones creadoras, él anunció y recomendó la modernidad.. Defendía el arte de avanzada, hasta en sus expresiones radicales, siempre que los autores tengan una preparación, arraigada en la estética secular. ¡Ese gran conocedor se caracterizaba por una exigencia sin concesiones, y los artistas se la aceptaban: así sucedió con José Vela Zanetti.
Evocar a Rafael Díaz Niese no se puede hacer prescindiendo de referencias a sus excelentes escritos: conservan la misma actualidad en redacción, conceptos, mensajes,pareciendo algo increíble en aquella época de tiranía. Su medio privilegiado de comunicación fue los Cuadernos Dominicanos de Cultura, siendo él uno de sus editores. ¡Ojalá tengamos una publicación comparable!
Presentamos una simple introducción a Díaz Niese, anhelando que se celebre hasta un seminario sobre su obra, compromiso y temperamento, y que tan brillante personalidad recupere su sitial en nuestras memorias. No son pocos los que ignoran hasta su nombre: de una generación a otra(s), el olvido es implacable.
Una vida breve e intensa
Rafael Díaz Niese nació en Puerto Plata el 1ero de mayo 1897, de madre alemana y padre dominicano. La familia se trasladó pronto a Santiago donde él cursó su escolaridad. Adolescente aun, viajó a Europa donde se desarrollarían dotes y formación, luego crecerían su dinamismo, su curiosidad, su producción.
Llegando primero a España, parece que él se iba a dedicar a la pintura, estudiando en Barcelona y Madrid: sin embargo a la práctica artística, prefirió la teoría. No obstante, fue en Francia y en la Universidad de París, donde se volvería un profesional de alto vuelo, con un Doctorado en Medicina y especialidad en Psiquiatría, otro Doctorado en Filosofía. Llegan a mencionar aún un tercero en Arte…
Pero, no fueron solamente estudios exitosos y extensos. La sed de conocer abarcaba los viajes, a Bélgica, a Alemania, a Italia… Afirmaba el historiador Emilio Rodríguez Demorizi: “Es el doctor Rafael Díaz Niese, él que viaja con más detenimiento, con la más acusada atención de artista, por los campos del arte antiguo, hasta el grado de recorrer a pie casi toda Italia”.
Simultáneamente, tertuliaba, investigaba, escribía y preparaba su regreso a Santo Domingo. Por cierto, Rodríguez Demorizi enfatizó “el retorno de dos dominicanos que acendraban y maduraban su retorno de Europa, Jaime Colson, maestro de la pintura, Rafael Díaz Niese, maestro en la crítica de arte”.
Inmensa labor en Bellas Artes
Al año siguiente, Rafael Díaz Niese , que de inmediato causó revuelo entre intelectuales, inició su gestión de Director General de Bellas Artes. Ese gran trabajador, igualmente catedrático emérito,. aunó creación, organización y animación.
Fue el creador de instituciones fundamentales, todavía vigentes, así Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, Conservatorio Nacional de Música. Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional, Escuelas elementales de música en todo el país, Bienales Nacionales, Galería Nacional de Bellas Artes.
Otras de sus iniciativas formidables han desaparecido lamentablemente: exposiciones itinerantes por el territorio nacional, becas a los estudiantes, galardones, compra de obras, ayuda(s) a los artistas en general… Aparentemente , gracias a un mentor genial, el mundo del arte gozaba de mejor consideración a mediados del siglo pasado.
La última morada
Escribió Rafael Díaz Niese: “Hay minúsculos apartados rincones que dejan en la memoria más venturosos recuerdos que las grandes urbes o que los sitios reputados universalmente por su belleza y su valor histórico y artístico”. Esa evocación toma su sentido en el lugar que él escogió para su última morada.
Con motivo de una exposición ambulatoria, Díaz Niese visitó Loma de Cabrera y quedó flechado. Decidió que allí reposaría para siempre. Era el año 1945.
¿Había empezado a sentir el mal que se lo iba a llevar un lustro más tarde? En 1950, falleció de cáncer en un hospital de Nueva York, y lo enterraron en el cementerio de Loma de Cabrera, “ frente a arbustos y erizados pinares del Cerro Chacuey” (Sergio Reyes). En la misma localidad, feliz agradecimiento, hay una escuela Rafael Díaz Niese, y, hasta el plantel, una calle con el mismo nombre.
Se impone acondicionar su modesto sepulcro… pero con la misma discreción y cuidado estético que corresponden a un hombre del arte.

On July 19, eighty years of Law Number 311 was completed, which promulgated the creation of the General Directorate of Fine Arts. There is no better date to remember Rafael Díaz Niese. He was the first and unequaled General Director of Fine Arts, for ten years, until his death in 1950.
A multidisciplinary intellectual and outstanding among his peers, his contribution to the development of the arts in the Dominican Republic has been unmatched, combining cultural management like never before, and sublime writing between literary analysis and research in the human sciences. And above all, he erected the history and criticism of art at the highest level, erudite, deep, passionate, guiding, for a renewal of style and theme but in pursuit of a truly Dominican art.
In all creative manifestations, he announced and recommended modernity. He defended advanced art, even in its radical expressions, provided that the authors have a preparation, rooted in secular aesthetics. That great connoisseur was characterized by an uncompromising demand, and the artists accepted it: this was the case with José Vela Zanetti.
Evoke Rafael Díaz Niese can not be done without reference to his excellent writings: they keep the same news in writing, concepts, messages, looking incredible in that time of tyranny. His privileged means of communication was the Dominican Notebooks of Culture, being one of its editors. Hopefully we have a comparable post!
We present a simple introduction to Díaz Niese, longing for a seminar to be held on his work, commitment and temperament, and for such a brilliant personality to regain its place in our memories. Not a few people ignore even its name: from one generation to another (s), forgetfulness is unrelenting.
A short and intense life
Rafael Díaz Niese was born in Puerto Plata on May 1, 1897, to a German mother and a Dominican father. The family soon moved to Santiago where he attended school. Still a teenager, he traveled to Europe where skills and training would develop, then his dynamism, his curiosity, his production would grow.
Arriving first in Spain, it seems that he was going to dedicate himself to painting, studying in Barcelona and Madrid: however, in artistic practice, he preferred the theory. However, it was in France and at the University of Paris, where he would become a high-flying professional, with a Doctorate in Medicine and a specialty in Psychiatry, another Doctorate in Philosophy. They even mention a third in Art ...
But, it was not only successful and extensive studies. The thirst for knowledge included travel, to Belgium, to Germany, to Italy… The historian Emilio Rodríguez Demorizi affirmed: “It is Dr. Rafael Díaz Niese, he who travels more carefully, with the most marked attention of the artist, through the fields of ancient art, to the extent of walking almost all of Italy on foot ”.
Simultaneously, he chatted, investigated, wrote and prepared his return to Santo Domingo. By the way, Rodríguez Demorizi emphasized "the return of two Dominicans who were embracing and maturing their return from Europe, Jaime Colson, master of painting, Rafael Díaz Niese, master of art criticism."
Immense work in Fine Arts
The following year, Rafael Díaz Niese, who immediately caused a stir among intellectuals, began his tenure as Director General of Fine Arts. That great worker, also professor emeritus ,. He combined creation, organization and animation.
He was the creator of fundamental institutions, still in force, such as the National School of Fine Arts, the National Conservatory of Music. National Symphony Orchestra, Elementary Music Schools across the country, National Biennials, National Gallery of Fine Arts.
Other of his formidable initiatives have unfortunately disappeared: traveling exhibitions throughout the national territory, scholarships for students, awards, purchase of works, aid (s) to artists in general ... Apparently, thanks to a great mentor, the art world enjoyed of best consideration in the middle of the last century.
The last dwelling
Rafael Díaz Niese wrote: "There are tiny secluded corners that leave more fortunate memories in memory than the big cities or the places universally renowned for their beauty and historical and artistic value." That evocation takes its meaning in the place that he chose for his last abode.
On the occasion of an ambulatory exhibition, Díaz Niese visited Loma de Cabrera and was shot. He decided that he would rest there forever. It was the year 1945.
Had he begun to feel the evil that was going to take him five years later? In 1950, he died of cancer in a New York hospital, and he was buried in the Loma de Cabrera cemetery, "in front of bushes and bristling pine forests of Cerro Chacuey" (Sergio Reyes).
