Vivencias imborrables

Creemos haber conocido a Juan José Bellapart, hace casi medio siglo...

Juan José Bellapart, good man, museum man, art man

Por: Marianne de Tolentino

The departure of Juan José Bellapart has left us deep in grief. In the field of art and culture, growing humanism, altruistic vocation, concern to integrate young people, they have earned a special distinction in our hearts, our thoughts, our awareness of true talents. He was known to be in fragile health, but still full of courage, he had not stopped coming to his office and finding out about the artistic sanctuary, located on the fifth floor.

They loved Juan José Bellapart, they respected him, they valued the leadership of his museum. He was the patron who, believing in art for all, had put within his reach his magnificent collection of Dominican artists, by birth or by adoption. His demanding entrepreneurial temperament entrusted the leadership and executive responsibilities to women specialists, capable of managing, organizing and disseminating an exceptional collection, assembled at the edge of five decades.

Juan José Bellapart was also a model for his family who has accompanied him in activities and ideals. His wife Milagros, sadly out of time, was a diligent investigator; their daughters Maribel and Maripily have joined the heritage mission, turning monitoring into close participation.

The Bellapart Museum, a private, initially personal institution, is an example and pride for the Dominican Republic.

Indelible experiences

We believe we have known Juan José Bellapart, almost half a century ago ... It seems to us that it was in the post-first exhibition by Jaime Colson, historical by its date -1973-, its location - the Atarazana -, its director - the wife of Tony Prats -Ventós-: the Rosa María art room, friendship commitment and appointment of the great exhibitions.

The "Mr. Bellapart", fascinated by painting from his youth, soon did not have enough to look at pictures, he decided to acquire them at the cost of sacrifices ... He "declared" a collector, and no one would have prevented him from owning works by Jaime Colson, friend and teacher emblematic dominican.

The passion had been born, and soon, the entrepreneur in his young maturity would possess not only the largest “colsonian” representation in terms of quantity, but, fully identified with the artist, proud that the Dominican Republic had a brilliant and unmistakable creator , took part of the treasured collection to various countries in Europe -of course to Spain, the second homeland of the Puerto Rican master-, and further to Tokyo.

We consider it a memory duty, since Colson's wife Toyo Kurimoto was Japanese. To mention this exposition means to refer to the sensitivity of Juan José Bellapart. finally as emotional as it is rational and enterprising, that he never separated his love for art from the interiors of artists, until he became her confidant ...

The mutual trust was immense. We remember how his voice became broken when he spoke of art, of certain paintings, of his museum. A timbre, somewhat tremulous and serious, that we continue to hear ...

Very close people will know when and how the idea of the Museum was born. But, undoubtedly, those who visited the offices of Juán José Bellapart, in front of the current building and before the “elevated”, were fascinated by the accumulated, piled-up, supportive cadres, who leaned against each other!

All of us, we were eager to talk with "don Juan José", always very busy, who naturally imposed respect despite his bonhomie, and obviously took pleasure in talking showing the latest revelations between masterpieces and musty frames ...

Not all collectors are alike: if most maintain courtesy, they often lock themselves in with their "private passion." Juan José Bellapart was different, he loved to discover, share, listen. An open and oblative attitude governed his manners, in accordance with the deep joy that art procures, with the humanism that must accompany it.

The next step - an example in Dominican society - "was underway." Until the beginning of the Bellapart Museum it sounds both real and symbolic: the 20th century still, but turned towards the third millennium: 1,999.

What is, what is left

“The Foundation and the Juan José Bellapart Museum have the vocation of gathering, conserving and disseminating works of Dominican art. It is a deep satisfaction for us to have heard that, without a visit to the Bellapart Museum, the roots of Dominican art cannot be appreciated. He made this home of Dominican art in two stages, to expand the permanent exhibition space and, from its funds, present temporary events. The architect was Leopoldo Franco.

An observation is necessary. The Bellapart Museum is within the global construction of the Bella Agency and the Honda building -of much-celebrated design-, in the style of Japanese museums, housed in buildings of its business and industrial firm. A coincidence? We do not know ... However -and above all-, this location allowed Juan José Bellapart to always keep the museum in mind and, with his works, strengthen the spirit for daily work ...

We will now dispense with a comment on a model of institution, justly celebrated, analyzed, praised, reiterating that, thanks to an art lover and special personality, our capital city enjoys a small, wonderful-real oasis.

Juan José Bellapart was kept awake in his museum, in his second home. Countless were those who paid tribute, moving and sincere. In the artistic sphere, it was the last public act before the closure due to the pandemic. Once the nightmare is erased, who will return to the museum without thinking about don Juan José, and that, thanks to him, there, life is still beautiful?

The Bellapart Museum

The Bellapart Museum, incomparable in Dominican art, is already history and unique from its origins, for its initiatives and achievements.

The Bellapart Foundation and Museum in process had organized and presented in major cities in America, Europe and Asia, an anthology by Jaime Colson with 72 paintings and drawings - coming from the same Bellapart collection -, whose museography, adapted to each place, became an exhibition different, varying according to the institutions with texts translated into the local language. The museum had not yet opened! It is an exceptional case, being the international stage, when there is one, after the opening.

Management and installation model in its category, it presents a vast permanent collection, today considered the best to know and value the history of modern Dominican art until 1965. Internationally disseminated, an anthology of Dominican painting has revealed its figures and works teachers, traveling in Europe.

Then, its exceptional museography is periodically reviewed, and excellent temporary exhibitions are presented, accompanied by high-level publications, but without ostentation ... as it should be.

The flow of management and direction, also unique in Santo Domingo, is almost a miracle ... since the permanent team is tiny! It should be noted that, due to this same characteristic, Management plays an essential role. The three directors, who succeeded each other, Luisa Auffant, Paula Gómez, Myrna Guerrero, have assumed their functions as a mission and in a different way, according to their respective personalities.

The current director, Myrna Guerrero, who has a long career in the professorship, curatorship and art criticism, is adding to the Bellapart Museum a plural animation - gatherings, workshops, guided tours, conferences -, Oriented to education and assistance active, used by audiences, increasingly motivated and numerous,

… Hopefully soon we can reach this admirable seat and dedicate our excited thoughts to its author and ideologist, Juan José Bellapart.
