Julio Valdez nació en Santo Domingo, República Dominicana, en 1969. Actualmente, vive y trabaja en la ciudad de Nueva York, desde 1993.
Valdez es un pintor que trabaja en medios acrílicos y al óleo, un maestro grabador y artista de instalaciones. También es un artista docente y mentor de artistas emergentes. Su obra está incluida en colecciones privadas e institucionales a nivel nacional e internacional. En 2019, Valdez representó a República Dominicana en la 58a Bienal de Venecia con obras de la misma serie.
Las exposiciones recientes de 2021 incluyeron: Inside - Outside, Upside Down, en The Phillips Collection y I Can’t Breate, una instalación de arte público en Harlem. También se incluirá una reseña de su trabajo en el Museo de Arte de las Américas de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA), Washington, DC. en 2022.
La primera exposición museística de Valdez fue en el Museo Omar Rayo de Colombia en 1988. Desde entonces ha tenido 32 exposiciones individuales en galerías e instituciones a nivel nacional e internacional y ha participado en más de 100 exposiciones colectivas.
Valdez es un artista premiado cuya obra recibió premios en grabado en las bienales nacionales 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996 y 1998 en el Museo de Arte Moderno de Santo Domingo. También recibió premios internacionales, entre ellos la Paleta de Plata de Pintura en el XXX Festival Internacional de Pintura, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Francia en 1998, y el Gran Premio en la XVII Bienal E. León Jiménez en República Dominicana en 2000.
Las becas incluyen Artista en Residencia en The Studio Museum en Harlem, 1997-98,
Programa Artistas en el mercado, Museo de las Artes del Bronx, Beca de la Fundación para las Artes de Nueva York 2003, Beca de la Academia Nacional de Artes, Nueva York, para Estudios Avanzados en Arte Público.
En 2013, abrió una galería alternativa y un taller de grabado, JVS Project Space en su estudio para orientar a artistas subrepresentados y brindar oportunidades de exhibición. La galería se trasladó a un espacio a nivel de la calle en East Harlem a principios de este año.
Durante más de 20 años, Valdez ha organizado talleres y seminarios en la ciudad de Nueva York, Washington DC y Puerto Rico.
Su formación en bellas artes comenzó en República Dominicana 1984-1986 en la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, Santo Domingo y 1986-1988 en la Escuela de Diseño Altos de Chavόn, La Romana. Posteriormente estudió grabado en la ciudad de Nueva York con Robert Blackburn y Kathy Caraccio.

Julio Valdez was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1969. Currently, he lives and works in New York City, since 1993.
Valdez is a painter who works in acrylic and oil media, a master printmaker, and an installation artist. He is also a teaching artist and mentor to emerging artists. His work is included in private and institutional collections nationally and internationally. In 2019, Valdez represented the Dominican Republic at the 58th Venice Biennale with works from the same series.
Recent 2021 exhibitions included: Inside - Outside, Upside Down, at The Phillips Collection and I Can’t Breate, a public art installation in Harlem. A review of his work will also be included in the Art Museum of the Americas of the Organization of American States (OAS), Washington, DC. in 2022.
Valdez's first museum exhibition was at the Omar Rayo Museum in Colombia in 1988. Since then he has had 32 solo exhibitions in galleries and institutions nationally and internationally and has participated in more than 100 group exhibitions.
Valdez is an award-winning artist whose work received awards in printmaking at the 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996, and 1998 national biennials at the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo. He also received international awards, including the Silver Painting Palette at the XXX International Painting Festival, Cagnes-sur-Mer, France in 1998, and the Grand Prize at the XVII E. León Jiménez Biennial in the Dominican Republic in 2000.
Scholarships include Artist in Residence at The Studio Museum in Harlem, 1997-98,
Artists in the Market Program, Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts Scholarship 2003, National Academy of Arts Scholarship, New York, for Advanced Study in Public Art.
In 2013, he opened an alternative gallery and print shop, JVS Project Space in his studio to target underrepresented artists and provide exhibition opportunities. The gallery moved to a street-level space in East Harlem earlier this year.
For more than 20 years, Valdez has organized workshops and seminars in New York City, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico.

David Richard Gallery is pleased to present Julio Valdez, Water Paintings, in his first solo show with the Gallery. The presentation includes a selection of 15 paintings created from 2012 to 2019 and a previous painting from 2008 when the artist initially embarked on this ambitious and extensive body of work. The sizes of the paintings range from 12 x 10.5 inches to 54 x 76 inches. Some of the larger paintings were prepared and included in the 58th Venice Biennale, where Valdez represented the Dominican Republic.
