21c Museum Hotels adquiere obra de Amy Hussein en Untitled Art
La artista dominico-libanesa recibe Premio de Adquisición en el marco
de su participación en esta feria internacional de arte.

Casa Quién, el proyecto de producción artística y de pensamiento contemporáneo gestionado por artistas, presentó a la artista dominico-libanesa Amy Hussein en la 12va. edición de Untitled: la principal feria de arte independiente celebrada cada año y desde hace más de una década en las arenas de Miami Beach (Florida, Estados Unidos). En esta ocasión, el tema central de la feria giró en torno a la inclusión y la accesibilidad, dirigiendo su mirada hacia la igualdad de género en las artes y la curaduría en la era digital.
La artista multidisciplinaria presentó la muestra individual “Softly Feral”, en la que incorporó nuevas técnicas de diseño y tejido, así como impresión 3D. En palabras de Dulcina Abreu, curadora afiliada a The Latinx Project, de New York University: “Amy orquesta con ojos antropológicos un proyecto de recuperación histórica, haciendo énfasis en el liderazgo femenino”. Sostiene además que, a través de esta serie realza a las matriarcas de su familia y el rol de las tradiciones orales dentro de metodologías de resistencia decolonial.
A propósito de su participación en la feria, una de sus obras en exhibición, titulada “L’Hallali (après Hondius)”, obtuvo un Premio de Adquisición otorgado por 21c Museum Hotels, uno de los museos de arte contemporáneo más grandes de los Estados Unidos y el único museo de América del Norte cuya colección es dedicada exclusivamente al arte del siglo XXI. Con este hecho, su trabajo ingresa formalmente a dicha colección.
La citada obra es un tapiz elaborado a partir de nuevos métodos de tejido que combinan lo manual y tecnológico. En ella, Hussein retoma el tradicional tema de la cacería y lo conecta con la historia contemporánea, dejando en evidencia la realidad de la violencia de género en la República Dominicana.
La selección estuvo guiada por el equipo curatorial de la feria, mientras que la decisión final recayó en los fundadores, filántropos y coleccionistas de la institución, Laura Lee Brown y Steve Wilson, y la curadora en jefe de 21c Museum, Alice Gray.
“Softly Feral” formó parte del segmento de la feria denominado “Nest”, que nace en 2021 con el objetivo de proporcionar a un grupo emergente de galerías, colectivos y organizaciones sin fines de lucro un nuevo sistema que busca eliminar las barreras tradicionalmente asociadas a la compleja estructura de las ferias de arte y los costos que suponen.
Sobre la artista. Amy Hussein (1989) es una artista visual dominico-libanesa, cuyo trabajo se enfoca en la resignificación, recodificación y yuxtaposición de imágenes de la cultura contemporánea. Hussein configura un imaginario personal que lidia con las complejidades de la diáspora y la reimaginación de su contexto. Asistió a la Escuela de Diseño de Altos de Chavón (2014) y al Programa de Estudios Intensivos de Parsons The New School (2013). Además, participó en Curando Caribe (2016), un programa de formación curatorial organizado por el Centro León y el Centro Cultural de España en Santo Domingo. Su obra forma parte de la colección del Centro de la Imagen y de varias colecciones privadas en República Dominicana y el Caribe.

Casa Who, the artistic production and contemporary thought project managed by artists, presented the Dominican-Lebanese artist Amy Hussein at the 12th. edition of Untitled: the main independent art fair held every year and for more than a decade on the sands of Miami Beach (Florida, United States). On this occasion, the central theme of the fair revolved around inclusion and accessibility, directing its gaze towards gender equality in the arts and curating in the digital age.
The multidisciplinary artist presented the solo exhibition “Softly Feral”, in which she incorporated new design and weaving techniques, as well as 3D printing. In the words of Dulcina Abreu, curator affiliated with The Latinx Project, at New York University: “Amy orchestrates with anthropological eyes a project of historical recovery, emphasizing female leadership.” She further argues that, through this series she highlights the matriarchs of her family and the role of oral traditions within methodologies of decolonial resistance.
Regarding his participation in the fair, one of his works on display, titled “L'Hallali (après Hondius)”, obtained an Acquisition Prize awarded by 21c Museum Hotels, one of the largest contemporary art museums in the United States. United States and the only museum in North America whose collection is dedicated exclusively to 21st century art. With this fact, her work formally enters said collection.
The aforementioned work is a tapestry made from new weaving methods that combine manual and technological. In it, Hussein takes up the traditional theme of hunting and connects it with contemporary history, revealing the reality of gender violence in the Dominican Republic.
The selection was guided by the fair's curatorial team, while the final decision rested with the institution's founders, philanthropists and collectors, Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, and 21c Museum's chief curator, Alice Gray.
“Softly Feral” was part of the segment of the fair called “Nest”, which was born in 2021 with the aim of providing an emerging group of galleries, collectives and non-profit organizations with a new system that seeks to eliminate the barriers traditionally associated with the complex structure of art fairs and the costs they entail.
About the artist. Amy Hussein (1989) is a Dominican-Lebanese visual artist, whose work focuses on the resignification, recodification and juxtaposition of images of contemporary culture. Hussein configures a personal imaginary that grapples with the complexities of the diaspora and the reimagining of its context. She attended Altos de Chavón School of Design (2014) and Parsons The New School Intensive Studies Program (2013). Additionally, she participated in Curando Caribe (2016), a curatorial training program organized by the León Center and the Cultural Center of Spain in Santo Domingo. Her work is part of the collection of the Image Center and several private collections in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean.
