Esta exposición presenta su producción artística más reciente. El término epifanía ha servido como metáfora de su experiencia creativa, ya que significa aparición o manifestación y se usa a menudo en un contexto religioso para representar visiones divinas. Para él, el arte, como fenómeno social, tiene una esencia mística; documenta la experiencia humana en niveles profundos, revelando ideas, pensamientos, emociones y sentimientos que incluso escapan a la razón del artista que los crea.

Lo que fascina al artista es el viaje desde su inmersión –durante horas, días y meses–en la intimidad de su estudio, en un constante soliloquio plasmado en las superficies del lienzo, el papel o cualquier otro medio con el que trabaje, hasta la interacción con el público. Una vez terminada, la obra cobra vida propia y comienza a interactuar con los espectadores, quienes, independientemente de su edad, origen o procedencia, se identifican con ella, dando lugar a las conversaciones más diversas e inesperadas.
Estas obras han surgido de visiones: cada una es una historia, una reflexión cargada de recuerdos y pensamientos que reflejan lo que ella experimentaba en ese momento. Así, por ejemplo, la primera obra que creó para este proyecto, «La Sintonizadora de Rutas para Almas Errantes», está impregnada del espíritu y las impresiones de un reciente viaje a Bali, Indonesia, donde experimentó una afinidad espiritual, filosófica y, sobre todo, humana con sus raíces cubanas. Allí descubrió conexiones geográficas y un sincretismo cultural y religioso expresado de diversas maneras. La imagen de esta obra está inspirada en muñecas de paja que representan a Dewi Sri, la diosa del arroz y la fertilidad, con un profundo poder evocador y simbólico. En su pintura, Estévez quiso representar la maquinaria del destino como un carrusel que mueve criaturas semejantes a peces que transportan planetas, y en el centro, una figura femenina las organiza, como una especie de planetario en miniatura donde se despliega la trama de la existencia: el microcosmos humano.
Para el artista, la creación artística es pasión y obsesión, una especie de condición crónica que le da vida y energía, a la vez que lo consume. Su estudio es una nave espacial que lo transporta a otra dimensión, y a través de este viaje, explora y contempla su experiencia humana para compartirla con los demás, expandiéndose. Es un viaje continuo a través del cual se contemplan sus obras; cada pieza es un espacio metafísico infinito que, al interactuar con el espectador, se abre a múltiples e interminables interpretaciones. Para Estévez, cada pintura es una puerta a nuevos caminos. Así surgió y se desarrolló este proyecto: de visión en visión, como una
historia sin fin. Si este proyecto fuera un libro, sería una recopilación de reflexiones que abordan diversos temas sobre la existencia: la fe, los sueños, la identidad, las ciudades, etc. De forma poética, sus impresiones de la vida se traducen en imágenes. Por ejemplo, la obra Epifanía se inspira en recuerdos de la infancia y en su relación con la iconografía religiosa: aquellas figuras que poblaron nuestros hogares durante la niñez y a las que rendimos tanta reverencia, generando a su alrededor un aura de misterio y sacralidad.
Su mundo infantil nació en Cuba, en La Habana Vieja, un barrio repleto de palacios y fortalezas militares, parques con farolas y fuentes, iglesias y monasterios con esculturas y vidrieras que alimentaban sus fantasías. La condición insular, con su dinámica sociocultural inherente, el lento paso del tiempo —que nos anima a soñar como medio de salvación—, las relaciones humanas extrovertidas y entusiastas típicas del Caribe, y las condiciones sociopolíticas de Cuba, marcadas por las dificultades económicas y la represión política, moldearon su cosmovisión. La necesidad se convirtió en el motor de la invención.
Cuando Carlos Estévez emigró de Cuba, quedó cautivado por la diversidad humana: cada lugar, con su propia identidad única, le reveló los tesoros del patrimonio humano, y viajar se convirtió en una pasión. Explorar el mundo y su diversidad ha sido, desde entonces, su mayor inspiración. Vive un viaje paralelo entre el mundo y el arte, y estas obras son sus testimonios más recientes de esos viajes.

Lucy García Gallery presents “Epiphanies,” a solo exhibition by our internationally
renowned Cuban artist Carlos Estévez.
This exhibition features his most recent artistic production. The term epiphany has
served as a metaphor for his creative experience, as it means apparition or
manifestation and is often used in a religious context to represent divine visions. For
him, art, as a social phenomenon, has a mystical essence; it documents the human experience at profound levels, revealing ideas, thoughts, emotions, and feelings that even escape the reason of the artist who creates them.
What fascinates the artist is the journey from his immersion—for hours, days, and months—in the intimacy of his studio, in a constant soliloquy recorded on the surfaces of the canvas, paper, or whatever medium he works with, to the interaction with the public. Once finished, the work takes on a life of its own and begins to interact with the viewers, who, regardless of their age, background, or origin, identify with it, giving rise to the most diverse and unexpected conversations.
These works have emerged from visions: each one is a story, a reflection laden with memories and thoughts that reflect what she was experiencing at that moment. Thus, for example, the first work she created for this project, The Tuner of Routes for Wandering Souls, is imbued with the spirit and impressions of a recent trip to Bali, Indonesia, where she experienced a spiritual, philosophical, and above all, human affinity with her Cuban roots. There she discovered geographical connections and
a cultural and religious syncretism expressed in different ways. The image of this work is inspired by straw dolls representing Dewi Sri, the goddess of rice and fertility, with profound evocative and symbolic power. In her painting, Estévez wanted to represent the machinery of destiny as a carousel that moves creatures resembling fish carrying planets, and in the center, a female figure
organizes them, like a kind of miniature planetarium where the plot of existence unfolds: the human microcosm.
For the artist, artistic creation is passion and obsession, a kind of chronic condition that gives him life and energy, while simultaneously consuming him. His studio is a spaceship that transports him to another dimension, and through this journey, he explores and contemplates his human experience in order to share it with others, expanding it. It is a continuous journey through which his works are viewed; each piece is an infinite metaphysical space that, by interacting with the viewer, opens itself to multiple, never-ending interpretations. For Estévez, each painting is a
doorway to new paths. This is how this project arose and developed: from vision to vision, like an endless story. If this project were a book, it would be a compilation of thoughts that address different themes about existence—faith, dreams, identity, cities, and so on. In a poetic way, his impressions of life are translated into images. For example, the work Epiphany is inspired by childhood memories and his relationship with religious iconography: those figures that inhabited our homes as children and
to whom we paid such reverence, generating around them an aura of mystery and sacredness.
His childhood world was born in Cuba, in Old Havana, a neighborhood full of palaces and military fortresses, parks with lampposts and fountains, churches and monasteries with sculptures and stained-glass windows that fueled his fantasies. The island condition, with its inherent sociocultural dynamics, the slow passage of time—which encourages us to dream as a means of salvation—the extroverted and enthusiastic human relationships typical of the Caribbean, and the sociopolitical conditions of Cuba, marked by economic hardship and political repression, shaped his worldview. Necessity became the driving force of invention.
When Carlos Estévez emigrated from Cuba, he was captivated by human diversity: each place, with its own unique identity, shared with him the treasures of human heritage, and travel became a passion. Exploring the world and its diversity has been, ever since, his greatest inspiration. He lives a parallel journey between the world and art, and these works are his most recent testaments to those travels.
