Patricia Castillo, desde temprana edad, está consciente de su inclinación hacia las artes por tener la dicha de nacer en una familia en la que el talento artístico fue siempre reconocido.
La publicidad era la única carrera más cercana al arte que encontró en sus años de formación académica. En la universidad, la publicidad fue solo el primer paso para llegar a lo que estaba buscando.
Consideramos que es de esa formación que naciera en ella su excepcional maestría del discurso visual y de la poética.
La destreza por despegar de los materiales, del objeto y de sus composiciones, una conectividad aguda, inmediata y eficiente con el público, la convierten en la artista conceptual dominicana que más se inclina por compartir con el público sus hallazgos estéticos y sus mensajes éticos que hemos podido destacar en sus primeras obras relacionadas con la salud física y mental.
Presentó su primera exposición individual “Sanidad”, en el Centro Cultural de España, suscitando un gran asombro e interés de los medios especializados, así como de la crítica y coleccionistas que vieron en ella un fenómeno renovador dentro del movimiento del arte conceptual dominicano, pues los referentes de composición de Patricia Castillo marcaron un nuevo diálogo con la sociedad y el arte, siendo una artista de soluciones sencillas y simples, tanto en la materia como en el concepto, sin dejar de lado la profundidad de una idea y de sus símbolos y metáforas, que permiten al público y a la ciudadanía un intercambio abierto y crítico, logrando y manifestando en otras exhibiciones
Como: “Apotheke”, “A dónde voy”, “Equilibrio elemental” y “Nylon y Madera”.
Los medios que le dan formas a sus obras son elementos de la vida cotidiana, como ropas, alimentos, medicinas, plásticos, bolsitas de agua potable, entre otros.
Con el nacimiento de su hija retomó un material que en su infancia fue una obsesión para ella; el hilo de nylon, el que a temprana edad trabajó crochet, estando muy interesada en realizar una obra en gran formato y poder comprar un hilo grande de nylon, material que se volvió un elemento clave en la creación de algunos de los diseños que estaba realizando.
Durante nuestro encuentro crítico, nos interesamos hondamente en su relación con el hilo y el nylon, por haber visitado en la Fondation Clément de Fort de France Martinica, una magnífica exposición de instalaciones en formato grande, que dejó impactado a los críticos e intelectuales de la isla francófona.
En Colombia, después de salir de una escuela tan conservadora como la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Arte, fue refrescante para esta artista tener la oportunidad de trabajar con los medios de su preferencia, contando con un tutor que realizaba la labor de guía en cada proyecto a realizar. También, tuvo la oportunidad de presentar sus primeras obras al público, y estar directamente involucrada con todo el proceso de organización y montaje de la exposición final.
Otra gran experiencia logró en Washington D. C. siendo crucial en su formación; allí, estuvo dos años experimentando por su cuenta con diferentes técnicas de pintura y participando en varias exposiciones.
Cuenta entre sus periplos, su reciente proceso en Berlín, capital europea donde fue recibida e invitada por la Fundación Davidoff. Estando muy clara con sus metas, pudo disfrutar de una seria praxis experimental en un taller donde logró manipular máquinas y herramientas que nunca antes tuvo la oportunidad de conocer.
Es a fuerza de trabajo y cuestionamientos que Patricia Castillo presenta y permite hoy día ser una de las mayores artistas conceptuales dominicanas presentes en el mundo, con el propósito de no dejarse limitar por las circunstancias del mercado del arte.
“Ahora estoy mejor posicionada en el mercado de arte, gracias al apoyo del equipo de la Galería de Lucy García”. “En lo económico, me ha tocado fajar, para hacer cada una de mis obras, pero la satisfacción de hacerlas y además exponerlas es todo para mí. Vender nunca fue mi prioridad, pero también reconozco lo saludable y gratificante que es para el proceso creativo y la producción de la misma obra, recibir incentivos a cambio de hacer lo que más me apasiona, nos confiesa con la seguridad, tranquilidad y discreción que la caracteriza”.
Durante nuestro reciente encuentro, compartimos con esta artista sobre el arte conceptual en Dominicana, con evocaciones desde los años 90, y, Patricia Castillo con serena y generosa observación, nos confesó…”Mis dos referentes son artistas dominicanos: La primera, Quisqueya Henríquez, que fue mi profesora en la Escuela de Altos de Chavón, a quien siempre le voy a agradecer que me encendió las chispas de expresar el arte, no solo a través de los medios convencionales, como los son: la pintura y el dibujo, sino a “no tener límites” a la hora de elegir los materiales adecuados para llevar a cabo el discurso. Otro artista importante en mi carrera es Raúl Recio, quien desde mi primera exposición siempre ha sido amigo y uno de los primeros artista en recibirme con los brazos abiertos, en el ambiente artístico nacional."
Por otro parte, aplaudimos que la obra de Patricia Castillo está en constante crecimiento, y ella define su inspiración que a su vez le permite poder estudiar y continuar todos sus procesos.
Estas palabras vinieron a sellar nuestra apreciación razonada sobre el potencial creativo de una artista que lleva su obra con prudencia y muchos cuestionamientos críticos pero, también, con una implicación reflexiva y meditativa envueltas en muchas etapas, tanto emocionales como físicas, donde se desata el entendimiento con la misma energía de ideas y pensamientos que nutren al ser humano en su camino de vida.
En el mes de febrero de este año 2020 que recién empieza, convocamos a disfrutar en el espacio Montesinos, una colectiva, donde podremos apreciar la obra de Patricia Castillo, y la que demostrará al público su reconocida y singular particularidad.
Patricia Castillo: A poetic force for conceptual art

He presented his first solo exhibition "Health" at the Cultural Center of Spain, arousing great amazement and interest from the specialized media, as well as from critics and collectors who saw in it a renovating phenomenon within the Dominican conceptual art movement, since Patricia Castillo's compositional references marked a new dialogue with society and art, being an artist of simple and simple solutions, both in matter and concept, without neglecting the depth of an idea and its symbols and metaphors, which allow the public and citizens to have an open and critical exchange, achieving and manifesting in other exhibitions Like: "Apotheke", "Where am I going", "Elemental balance" and "Nylon and Wood". The means that shape his works are elements of everyday life, such as clothes, food, medicine, plastics, bags of drinking water, among others. During our critical meeting, we became deeply interested in its relationship with thread and nylon, for having visited the Fondation Clément in Fort de France Martinique, a magnificent exhibition of large-format installations, which left critics and intellectuals of the francophone island. In Colombia, after leaving such a conservative school as the National School of Fine Arts, it was refreshing for this artist to have the opportunity to work with the media of her choice, with a tutor who carried out the work of guide in each project to perform. Also, she had the opportunity to present her first works to the public, and to be directly involved with the entire process of organizing and mounting the final exhibition. Selling was never my priority, but I also recognize how healthy and rewarding it is for the creative process and the production of the same work, receiving incentives in exchange for doing what I am most passionate about, confesses to us with the security, tranquility and discretion that the characterizes ”.
During our recent meeting, we shared with this artist about conceptual art in the Dominican Republic, with evocations since the 90s, and, Patricia Castillo with serene and generous observation, confessed to us… ”My two references are Dominican artists: The first, Quisqueya Henríquez, who was my teacher at the Altos de Chavón School, whom I will always thank for igniting the sparks of expressing art, not only through conventional means, such as: painting and drawing, but to "Have no limits" when choosing the right materials to carry out the speech. These words came to seal our reasoned appreciation of the creative potential of an artist who carries her work with prudence and many critical questions, but also with a reflective and meditative involvement involved in many stages, both emotional and physical, where understanding is unleashed. with the same energy of ideas and thoughts that nurture the human being on his way of life. In the month of February of this year 2020 that has just begun, we convened to enjoy in the Montesinos space, a collective, where we can appreciate the work of Patricia Castillo, and which will demonstrate to the public its recognized and unique peculiarity.
