Un tapiz que representa la pintura épica Guernica de Picasso, que durante 35 años había colgado frente a la entrada del Consejo de Seguridad en la sede de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) en Nueva York, ha sido retirado y devuelto a sus propietarios, la familia Rockefeller.
La obra fue encargada en 1955 por el diplomático y filántropo Nelson A. Rockefeller, quien pidió al Atelier J. de la Baume-Durrbach que le tejiera una copia de la famosa obra pacifista de 1935 de Picasso, creada como reacción al bombardeo nazi de la ciudad española de Guernica. Según se informa, Rockefeller se vio obligado a hacerlo después de que Picasso se negara a venderle el original. Rockefeller prestó el tapiz a la ONU en 1984 y se dio a conocer el 13 de septiembre del año siguiente.
Sin embargo, el hijo de Rockefeller, Nelson A. Rockefeller, Jr., "notificó recientemente a la ONU de su intención de recuperar [el tapiz]" y le fue devuelto a principios de este mes, según una carta enviada por la jefa de gabinete de la ONU, Maria Luiza. Ribeiro Viotti al presidente del Consejo de Seguridad.
La familia Rockefeller no dio una razón para la remoción del tapiz en la carta.
El tapiz estuvo en el centro de una controversia en febrero de 2003, justo antes del estallido de la guerra de Estados Unidos en Irak, cuando fue cubierto por una cortina antes de que Colin Powell, el entonces secretario de Estado de Estados Unidos, se dirigiera a la ONU. Según los informes, los funcionarios del gobierno estaban preocupados por la aparición de la óptica de Powell frente a una famosa obra de arte pacifista al tiempo que instaban a que se enviara a los soldados estadounidenses al combate. Y en 2009, el tapiz fue prestado a la Whitechapel Gallery en Londres para su reapertura luego de una renovación de £ 13.5 millones, donde fue la pieza central de una instalación del artista polaco residente en Londres Goshka Macuga.
"Me siento triste y una extraña sensación de pérdida mirando la pared vacía que recientemente fue adornada con este tapiz", dice Stéphane Dujarric, portavoz del secretario general de la ONU, en un comunicado compartido con The Art Newspaper. "No solo fue un recordatorio conmovedor de los horrores de la guerra, sino que, debido a su situación, también fue un testimonio de gran parte de la historia que se desarrolló fuera del Consejo de Seguridad desde 1985".
"Puedo decirles que el Secretario General y otros en la Secretaría hicieron un esfuerzo real para mantenerlo aquí, pero no lo logramos", agrega.
En la carta, Viotti dijo que el Comité de Arte de las Naciones Unidas revisaría las opciones para que el arte nuevo se exhiba fuera de la cámara.

A tapestry depicting Picasso's epic painting Guernica, which for 35 years had hung outside the entrance to the Security Council at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, has been removed and returned to its owners, the Rockefeller family.
The work was commissioned in 1955 by the diplomat and philanthropist Nelson A. Rockefeller, who requested the Atelier J. de la Baume-Durrbach to weave him a copy of Picasso's famous 1935 anti-war work, created as a reaction to the Nazi bombing of the Spanish town of Guernica. Reportedly, Rockefeller was driven to do so after Picasso refused to sell him the original. Rockefeller lent the tapestry to the UN in 1984 and it was unveiled on 13 September the following year.
However, Rockefeller's son, Nelson A. Rockefeller, Jr, "recently notified the UN of his intention to retrieve [the tapestry]" and it was returned to him earlier this month, according to a letter sent from the UN's Chef de Cabinet Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti to the Security Council's president.
The Rockefeller family did not give a reason for the tapestry's removal in the letter.
The tapestry was at the centre of a controversy in February 2003, just before the outbreak of the US war in Iraq, when it was covered by a curtain before Colin Powell, then the US Secretary of State, addressed the UN. Government officials were reportedly concerned about the optics of Powell appearing in front of a famous piece of pacifist art while urging that American soldiers be sent into combat. And in 2009, the tapestry was loaned to the Whitechapel Gallery in London for its re-opening following a £13.5m renovation, where it was the centrepiece to an installation by the London-based Polish artist Goshka Macuga.
"I feel sad and a strange sense of loss looking at the empty wall that was recently graced by this tapestry," says Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, in a statement shared with The Art Newspaper. "It was not only a moving reminder of the horrors of war but, because of where it stood, it was also a witness to so much of the history that unfolded outside of the Security Council since 1985."
"I can tell you that the Secretary-General and others in the Secretariat made a real effort to keep it here, but we were not successful," he adds.
In the letter, Viotti said the United Nations Arts Committee would review options for new art to be displayed outside the chamber.
