Cuando fallece un artista, repiten que sus obras lo tendrán presente y que así vivirá siempre entre nosotros. No deja de ser verdad: la creación perenniza a su creador. Sin embargo, parece más un consuelo que una certidumbre cuando ese artista acompañaba sus obras con un compromiso activo, valiente y enérgico, racional y emotivo.
Así era Silvano Lora, cuya “persona” militante intervenía en todos momentos y causas que consideraba cruciales. Él no soportaba que fallas y abusos se cometieran. Su voz, su verbo, sus palabras, tronaban públicamente. Y, cuando las circunstancias mandaron, él llegó a empuñar el fusil. Nos referimos a Silvano Lora en la Revolución de Abril 1965 y el Frente Cultural Constitucionalista: ¡él compartía una gestión cultural, a la vez popular y generosa, eficaz y exigente, con el combate por la libertad!
Hace falta Silvano. Atinadamente, Fernando Ureña Rib, muy recordado artista y narrador, escribió que “Silvano Lora no solo contribuyó desde su propia obra, sino que se mantuvo siempre a la vanguardia en la organización de actividades que contribuyen a democratizar la apreciación y el desarrollo del arte entre los humildes, por ejemplo, la Bienal Marginal”.
Por cierto, ¿quien sabe si Silvano Lora no hubiera celebrado… hasta dos Bienales Marginales en 2017 y 2019, como un hecho artístico popular y una manera de protestar por la posposición indefinida de la Bienal Nacional? Tampoco dudamos de que él hubiera participado en el cuidado y la protección de los artistas jóvenes estudiantes de arte y sus familias contra la pandemia, con una distribución gratuita de mascarillas y más atenciones vitales. Silvano nunca se mantenía al margen de los problemas sociales…
Nos hace falta Silvano Lora en las actuales circunstancias, tan difíciles para el arte y los artistas.
Un testimonio ejemplar. Fue una excelente iniciativa de la Fundación Taller Público Silvano Lora, encabezada por su hija Quisqueya, que se hiciese un documental sobre Silvano, su vida, su obra, titulado “Silvano Lora, Laboratorio Artístico, Cultural Popular”.
La realización fue de Oscar Grullón –ya autor de una filmación anterior-, con una colaboración fundamental del profesor Odalis Pérez. Participaron como entrevistados Tony Raful, Myrna Guerrero, Odalis Pérez y quien escribe.
Es un ejemplo estupendo de lo que se puede hacer en “videos” de artista. Es documental, testimonio y narración visual aun, con un guión perfecto. Además, las intervenciones son sustanciales y cortas, animadas por una profusión de imágenes, igualmente buenas e interesantes, mostrando a Silvano Lora, desde su infancia y juventud, durante varios episodios de su vida –madurez tardía incluida-, dando importancia tanto a las gestas como a las obras. Mucho se dice, se ve, se oye, en solamente media hora.
Este “cortometraje”, presentado por televisión, amerita que un público numeroso lo disfrute, y esperamos que esté disponible en medios difusores abiertos. Poco a poco, se va constituyendo una filmoteca sobre arte dominicano: es una de las mejores opciones para que aumente necesariamente el público de museos y exposiciones.

When an artist dies, they repeat that their works will keep it in mind and that this will always live among us. It is still true: creation endures its creator. However, it seems more a consolation than a certainty when that artist accompanied his works with an active, courageous and energetic, rational and emotional commitment.
This was Silvano Lora, whose militant "person" intervened at all times and causes that he considered crucial. He could not bear failure and abuse being committed. His voice, his verb, his words thundered publicly. And, when circumstances commanded, he reached for the rifle. We refer to Silvano Lora in the April 1965 Revolution and the Constitutionalist Cultural Front: he shared a cultural management, both popular and generous, effective and demanding, with the fight for freedom!
Silvano is needed. Rightly, Fernando Ureña Rib, well-remembered artist and narrator, wrote that “Silvano Lora not only contributed from his own work, but always remained at the forefront in the organization of activities that contributed to democratizing the appreciation and development of art among the humble, for example, the Marginal Biennial ”.
By the way, who knows if Silvano Lora had not held ... up to two Marginal Biennials in 2017 and 2019, as a popular artistic event and a way to protest the indefinite postponement of the National Biennial? Nor do we doubt that he would have participated in the care and protection of young art student artists and their families against the pandemic, with a free distribution of masks and more vital care. Silvano never stayed out of social problems ...
We need Silvano Lora in the current circumstances, so difficult for art and artists.
An exemplary testimony. It was an excellent initiative of the Silvano Lora Public Workshop Foundation, led by his daughter Quisqueya, to make a documentary about Silvano, his life, his work, entitled "Silvano Lora, Artistic Laboratory, Popular Cultural".
The production was by Oscar Grullón - already the author of a previous filming -, with a fundamental collaboration of Professor Odalis Pérez. Tony Raful, Myrna Guerrero, Odalis Pérez and the writer wrote as interviewees.
It is a great example of what can be done in artist "videos". It is documentary, testimony and visual narration even, with a perfect script. In addition, the interventions are substantial and short, animated by a profusion of images, equally good and interesting, showing Silvano Lora, from his childhood and youth, during various episodes of his life - including late maturity -, giving importance to both deeds as to works. Much is said, seen, heard, in just half an hour.
This "short film", presented on television, deserves a large audience to enjoy it, and we hope it will be available on open broadcast media.
Little by little, a film library on Dominican art is being constituted: it is one of the best options for necessarily increasing the public of museums and exhibitions.
