Fundación Sacha Tebó, Quinta Dominica y Fundación Centro Cultural E. León Jimenes, invitan en el mes de Mayo al XV al aniversario de la Travesía del maestro Sacha Tebó, con el título “Travesías en Sugar” a celebrarse el día 9 de mayo hasta el 6 de junio a las 7:00 pm, en la Quinta Dominica, Calle Padre Billini 202, Zona Colonial.
Esta exposición contará con un Jardín de Esculturas donde la protagonista es la Instalación Sugar, que durante 15 años a sido exhibida y conservada en el Centro León Jimenes y será expuesta por primera vez en Santo Domingo.
Además tendremos a la venta pinturas y dibujos, para recaudación de fondos de la Fundación, así como la proyección del video de Leo Salazar de la vida y obra del artista, donde darán testimonio numerosos amigos de Sacha como ser humano.
Y dentro del marco de la noche, será realizado un performance por los artistas Sonia Alfonso y Geo Ripley.

Con “Travesías en Sugar “, nos embarcamos en esa ruta de signos y señales que permiten al espectador identificarse y vagar con sus realidades y fantasías por rutas personales de pasado y presente. Cada obra es un mensaje de exaltación a los conceptos de familia, amor, respeto y conservación de la naturaleza, cuyas leyes son innatas a la sustancia intrínseca del ser humano.
Consta de un compendio de objetos, en su parte material, tal como una gran batea que flota en un mar de olas-yugos y sacos de azúcar, con dos ejes de trapiches de cobre horadadas en formas de manos, pretendiendo agarrar deseos intangibles, persianas y tragaluces- memorias y recuerdos; nos inmersa en una barcaza cuyo destino transporta a un viaje del cual se desea retornar, ya que babor y estribor son estribor y babor. Esta Travesía permite al observador reconocer la fantasía y realidad de una inmigración forzada, en el movimiento incesante de un mar infinito que nos dirige hacia el origen de nuestro propio ser.
BIOGRAFÍA
Sacha Thébaud nace en el seno de una familia en la que el padre ejerce como cirujano-dentista y profesor formado en Montreal y Harvard. Desde su infancia el artista, que efectúa su educación en Montreal, Puerto Príncipe y Miami, muestra una tendencia e inclinación hacia las bellas artes, lo que le decide a realizar estudios en Arquitectura.
Hacia finales de los años ’50, recién terminada su carrera universitaria, una beca de perfeccionamiento le encamina a París para trabajar en la planificación de Le Rond Point de la Défense con la Agencia Internacional de Marcel Breuer (del Bauhaus), Luigi Nervi y Bernard Zehrfuss. Durante su estancia en París, tiene la oportunidad de encontrarse con Le Corbusier, maestro de la arquitectura moderna, que en ese momento le propone un puesto en la asesoría para la construcción de Chandigarh. Al principio de los ‘60, otra beca le facilita la oportunidad de una estancia en Brasil; donde entra en contacto con Oscar Niemeyer, arquitecto – diseñador del moderno centro gubernamental de Brasilia. Estos afamados profesionales ejercieron sobre el diseño de Tebó una indiscutible influencia filosófica.
En 1965, trasplantado a las Islas Vírgenes, dirige durante 15 años la firma de Arquitectos Thébaud + Begrow + Brown. Desde 1960 y durante los 40 años siguientes, estudios, proyectos de arquitectura y diseños, coinciden con múltiples exposiciones de pintura individual en el área del Caribe e internacional.
Una etapa prominente, es la participación con otros 3 artistas caribeños en una investigación apoyada por la Getty Foundation de los Angeles, California: “Dominicano y Haitiano un arte paralelo en un territorio caribeño”.
El Dr. Edward J. Sullivan, profesor de Arte Latino Americano, escritor y director de la escuela de arte de la New York University, en la presentación de un catálogo de Sacha Tebó a la galería Botello, describe sus pictógrafos como incorporando este elemento de Misticismo Hermético también encontrado en los petroglifos cincelados por culturas antiguas, testimonios llenos de fuerza del poder y simbolismo de la línea elocuente.
La Dra. Laura Gil del Museo de Arte Moderno de Santo Domingo, República Dominicana, miembro de la Asociación de Críticos de Arte, en su ensayo sobre Tebó menciona: “La misma creatividad que, en la mente y en el cosmos, se libera del camino trillado y descubre en las esencias inmemoriales las posibilidades secretas y las virtualidades ocultas, se vuelca en los signos escritúrales visuales que la labor del artista ha hecho posibles para la concreción de lo nuevo”.
Tebó falleció 26 de mayo 2004 a la edad de 70 en su residencia en Santiago, República Dominicana tras una corta batalla con el cáncer pancreático.

Sacha Thébaud was born into a family in which the father works as a dental surgeon and professor trained in Montreal and Harvard. Dr. Edward J. Tebó died May 26, 2004 at the age of 70 at his residence in Santiago, Dominican Republic after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.
