Yina Jiménez Suriel forma parte del equipo curatorial del evento, previsto para septiembre 2024 en la ciudad de Porto Alegre, Brasil. Es la primera dominicana en asumir este rol en el citado encuentro.
A celebrarse en un momento histórico post pandemia, la Fundación Bienal del Mercosur anuncia la celebración de la 14va. edición de esta muestra internacional de arte contemporáneo, que tendrá lugar en septiembre de 2024 en Porto Alegre, Brasil, ciudad donde se gestó hace más de un cuarto siglo.
Como curador jefe del evento ha sido designado el brasileño Raphael Fonseca, quien se hará acompañar de los curadores adjuntos Tiago Sant’Ana, de Brasil, y Yina Jiménez Suriel, de República Dominicana. Juntos asumen el reto de diseñar los marcos conceptuales, seleccionar a los artistas y definir los lugares de exhibición, así como la programación y publicaciones de este evento referente del arte más actual en América Latina.
Jugando este rol, Jiménez Suriel se convierte en la primera dominicana en representar al país en esta importante cita, al tiempo que forma parte del equipo curatorial más joven en toda la historia de la Bienal. El anuncio se hace a tan solo meses de su participación en la Feria Arco Madrid 2023, como co-curadora de la sección Opening by Allianz, consolidando así su carrera en el circuito del arte internacional. Destacar además que este 2023, Yina Jiménez Suriel ha sido seleccionada como curadora del programa The Current IV de la Thyssen Bornemizsa Contemporary Art 21-Academy, un proyecto de investigación de tres años titulado “Otras montañas, las que andan sueltas bajo el agua”, enfocado en el océano y las montañas submarinas del Caribe.
Desde sus inicios en 1996, la Bienal del Mercosur se ha caracterizado por ser un espacio de pensamiento, crítica y reflexión, procurando ser en todo momento un espejo de su tiempo. Este evento, de carácter público-privado y colaborativo, surge con la intención de propiciar el intercambio cultural entre las naciones de Latinoamérica, a propósito de la conformación en 1991 del Mercosur, bloque económico fundado inicialmente por Argentina, Brasil, Paraguay y Uruguay.
Para esta edición, la Bienal se traza el desafío de acercarse aún más al público local, así como al de otras latitudes, reforzando su carácter internacional y, sobre todo, sus vínculos con Latinoamérica. Contempla como uno de los pilares del encuentro la creación de un circuito de exposiciones que integre los espacios institucionales de Porto Alegre y sus circundantes, permitiendo al público no solo apreciar las obras en recintos culturales, sino también comprender las dinámicas, movimientos y discursos de la ciudad. En su etapa actual, los organizadores trabajan con base a lo contemporáneo, aunando las posibles relaciones e intercambios entre las distintas generaciones de artistas y geografías del Sur Global.
El equipo lo completa un conjunto de expertas en ámbitos clave para la Bienal del Mercosur: el Programa Público, como un poder de articulación con la comunidad, liderado por Anna Mattos y Marina Feldens; y el Educativo, que discute la relación entre la educación y los procesos artísticos, a cargo de Andréa Hygino y Michele Ziegt. A estas se suman la curadora asistente Fernanda Medeiros; el Estudio Margem, responsable de la identidad visual de esta edición; y la arquitecta Juliana Godoy, encargada de la museografía de esta importante muestra que al día de hoy cuenta con más de 25 años de historia.
Sobre Yina Jiménez Suriel. Curadora e investigadora con un máster en estudios visuales. Su práctica es una investigación continua sobre procesos emancipatorios contemporáneos y la construcción de la imaginación. Es editora asociada de la revista Contemporary And (C&) para América Latina y el Caribe. Ha realizado residencias en la Delfina Foundation (Londres, Inglaterra) y en KADIST, San Francisco (Estados Unidos), y participado en varios programas públicos y talleres a escala internacional. Sus textos han sido incluidos en diversas publicaciones.

Mercosul Biennial Selects Dominican as Adjunct Curator: Yina Jiménez Suriel
Yina Jiménez Suriel is part of the curatorial team of the event, scheduled for September 2024 in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil. She is the first Dominican to assume this role in the aforementioned meeting.
To be held at a historic post-pandemic moment, the Mercosur Biennial Foundation announces the celebration of the 14th. edition of this international exhibition of contemporary art, which will take place in September 2024 in Porto Alegre, Brazil, the city where it was created more than a quarter century ago.
The Brazilian Raphael Fonseca has been appointed as chief curator of the event, who will be accompanied by the assistant curators Tiago Sant'Ana, from Brazil, and Yina Jiménez Suriel, from the Dominican Republic. Together they assume the challenge of designing the conceptual frameworks, selecting the artists and defining the exhibition venues, as well as the programming and publications of this most current art event in Latin America.
Playing this role, Jiménez Suriel becomes the first Dominican to represent the country in this important event, while she is part of the youngest curatorial team in the entire history of the Biennial. The announcement is made just months after her participation in the Arco Madrid 2023 Fair, as co-curator of the Opening by Allianz section, thus consolidating her career in the international art circuit. It should also be noted that this 2023, Yina Jiménez Suriel has been selected as curator of The Current IV program of the Thyssen Bornemizsa Contemporary Art 21-Academy, a three-year research project entitled "Other mountains, those that are loose under water", focused on the ocean and seamounts of the Caribbean.
Since its inception in 1996, the Mercosur Biennial has been characterized as a space for thought, criticism and reflection, seeking to be a mirror of its time at all times. This event, of a public-private and collaborative nature, arises with the intention of promoting cultural exchange between the nations of Latin America, regarding the formation in 1991 of Mercosur, an economic block initially founded by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
For this edition, the Biennial challenges itself to get even closer to the local public, as well as to those from other latitudes, reinforcing its international character and, above all, its links with Latin America. It contemplates as one of the pillars of the meeting the creation of an exhibition circuit that integrates the institutional spaces of Porto Alegre and its surrounding areas, allowing the public not only to appreciate the works in cultural venues, but also to understand the dynamics, movements and discourses of the city. In its current stage, the organizers work based on the contemporary, combining the possible relationships and exchanges between the different generations of artists and geographies of the Global South.
The team is completed by a group of experts in key areas for the Mercosur Biennial: the Public Program, as a power of articulation with the community, led by Anna Mattos and Marina Feldens; and the Educational one, which discusses the relationship between education and artistic processes, by Andréa Hygino and Michele Ziegt. To these are added the assistant curator Fernanda Medeiros; Estudio Margem, responsible for the visual identity of this edition; and the architect Juliana Godoy, in charge of the museography of this important exhibition that today has more than 25 years of history.
About Yina Jimenez Suriel. Curator and researcher with a master's degree in visual studies. Her practice is a continuous investigation into contemporary emancipatory processes and the construction of the imagination. She is associate editor of Contemporary And (C&) magazine for Latin America and the Caribbean. She has completed residencies at the Delfina Foundation (London, England) and at KADIST, San Francisco (United States), and has participated in various public programs and workshops internationally.
