El Museo de Las Américas (MLA) anuncia la reapertura de su sede en Viejo San Juan a partir del viernes, 13 de noviembre con la más reciente exposición del artista Rafael Trelles titulada La palabra imaginada. La exposición coincide con la incorporación de Trelles como Académico de número a la Academia Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española.

“Constituye un privilegio para el Museo de Las Américas formar parte de esta gran distinción con la presentación de una exposición cuya pertinencia no puede llegar en mejor momento en que vivimos grandes retos a nivel mundial. Esta muestra nos convida de manera magistral a visitar la genialidad y la imaginación de los grandes escritores para reflexionar sobre nuestra naturaleza humana”, expresó María Ángela López Vilella Directora Ejecutiva del Museo de Las Américas.
La exposición La palabra imaginada está compuesta por 22 dibujos de mediano y gran formato trabajados con tinta de grabado sobre papel e inspirados en obras de la literatura universal. Con una depurada técnica, el autor recrea los personajes de las obras proponiendo lecturas e interpretaciones inesperadas sin intentar ilustrar los textos, más bien elabora un texto visual alterno que dialoga con la fuente literaria.
Sobre su nueva obra Trelles señala lo siguiente: “Esta colección de dibujos la comencé a trabajar durante los meses posteriores al paso del huracán María y se fue desarrollando de manera orgánica durante los pasados dos años. Es una reflexión sobre la relación del arte y la literatura y el rol activo que ejerce el lector cuando interpreta una lectura”.
El profesor Efraín Barradas cuyo escrito acompaña la muestra comenta: “Los elementos surrealistas en la obra de Trelles, son notables, hasta definidores. Por otro lado, se destaca en este conjunto la combinación de lo puertorriqueño y lo extranjero: junto a Palés Matos hallamos a Saramago, junto a Ana Lydia Vega, a Shakespeare, junto a Cezanne Cardona, a Chejov. Trelles sabe que lo propio tiene valor más allá de por pertenecernos”.
La exposición cuenta con un catálogo que incorpora la obra completa junto al escrito del profesor Barradas. El mismo estará disponible en la tienda del MLA ubicada en el segundo piso del Cuartel de Ballajá y online en www.tiendadelmuseo.org.
La grabación de los actos de incorporación y de apertura de la exposición estarán disponibles a través del Facebook de la Academia Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española y del Museo de Las Américas, a partir del viernes, 13 de noviembre, a las 3:00 pm.
La exposición es posible gracias al patrocinio de la Comisión Conjunta de Donativos Legislativos para Impacto Comunitario, l’Artban, Dalia y Duane Stiller, Mr. Jimmy Díaz-Nieves y Dr. W Scott Thompson.
El Museo de Las Américas operará en horario especial de jueves a sábado de 11:00 am a 4:00 pm, tomando en cuenta las medidas de distanciamiento y seguridad requeridas ante la pandemia del Covid-19.

The Museum of the Americas reopens its doors with an exhibition by Rafael Trelles
November 9, 2020. San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Museum of the Americas (MLA) announces the reopening of its headquarters in Old San Juan starting Friday, November 13 with the most recent exhibition by the artist Rafael Trelles entitled The imagined word. The exhibition coincides with the incorporation of Trelles as a full member of the Puerto Rican Academy of the Spanish Language.
“It is a privilege for the Museum of the Americas to be part of this great distinction with the presentation of an exhibition whose relevance cannot come at a better time when we are experiencing great challenges worldwide. This exhibition invites us in a masterful way to visit the genius and imagination of the great writers to reflect on our human nature ”, expressed María Ángela López Vilella Executive Director of the Museum of the Americas.
The exhibition The imagined word is made up of 22 medium and large-format drawings worked with engraving ink on paper and inspired by works of world literature. With a refined technique, the author recreates the characters of the works proposing unexpected readings and interpretations without trying to illustrate the texts, rather he creates an alternate visual text that dialogues with the literary source.
About his new work, Trelles points out the following: “I started working on this collection of drawings in the months after Hurricane María and it developed organically over the past two years. It is a reflection on the relationship between art and literature and the active role that the reader plays when interpreting a reading ”.
Professor Efraín Barradas, whose writing accompanies the exhibition, comments: “The surreal elements in Trelles's work are remarkable, even defining. On the other hand, the combination of the Puerto Rican and the foreign stands out in this ensemble: together with Palés Matos we find Saramago, along with Ana Lydia Vega, Shakespeare, along with Cezanne Cardona, Chejov. Trelles knows that their own has value beyond belonging to us ”.
The exhibition has a catalog that incorporates the complete work together with the writing of Professor Barradas. It will be available at the MLA store located on the second floor of the Ballajá Barracks and online at www.tiendadelmuseo.org.
The recording of the incorporation and opening acts of the exhibition will be available through the Facebook of the Puerto Rican Academy of the Spanish Language and the Museum of the Americas, starting on Friday, November 13, at 3:00 pm.
