Ramón Oviedo (1924-2015) always stood out for being, among other things, the social painter of Dominicanness, the brush of the resistance, tireless fighter for the freedom and well-being of his people. The Master Ramón Oviedo was the creator of the most prolific work of art inciting the Dominican people to fight for democracy, his work, his posters, murals and others were part of his repertoire, his creativity, his brush and brush became a legend. , left an imprint on the history of advertising Art in the Dominican Republic, cartographer, sent by the Dominican State to specialize in the Panama Canal, was the first Art director of the first advertising organized by departments in the Country.
For all his career, for having won contests, biennials on several occasions and all the highest distinctions, he was later declared by the National Congress as "Illustrious Master of Dominican Painting", he carries out his work entitled "April 24" in the year of 1965. This work participates in the painting contest carried out in the midst of the feat of the April revolution, in which we observe how the pain of its people, the determination to defend its Constitution, armed with stones and sticks, crying of outrage and pain at the weapons of the invaders. This work has been considered the most important in Dominican painting and many critics refer to it as the "Guernica" by Pablo Picasso, of the Dominican people.
Ramón Oviedo has a prolific and fruitful work, stages through which he kept himself in constant evolution, his nightmare was to repeat himself and rest on success, which would bring him a formula to rest and stop his restlessness to create. We can cite among them their social stage, the drama and the precariousness of their people, the Red period, which included the torments, mysteries about the existence of the human being, where we come from and where we are going, the myth of Ciguapa, persistence evolutionary form in matter among others.
The Ramón Oviedo Foundation since it was incorporated, year after year carries out activities, exhibitions, talks, the celebration of its life anniversary, various projects to continue honoring memory, elevating in its fair dimension the great creator, preserving its legacy of life , to serve as an example to current and future generations. We just celebrated a cocktail on the occasion of its 96th anniversary, with the presence of some of its relatives, colleagues, Artists, Friends, art critics and cultural managers, the Activity was held at the Mirador Cultural Center.
Ramón Oviedo Herasme, went to sleep soundly, as his days were, serene and in peace, only the ailment and deterioration of his vertebrae took away his strength to continue executing works of large formats, but he never stopped creating, he kept his intellectual capacity with the same intensity as always, until the day his eyes were closed.
Without fear of being wrong, I say that universal modern art lost an artist - creative and inventor - of the most brilliant and important. The history of art in the Dominican Republic of the late twentieth century and early twenty-first century, have in Ramón Oviedo, the number one brush artist, representative of the Dominican arts, artist who studied and explored the great continental geniuses and then flew alone with his work of unique style and a benchmark for all generations.
His universal work on a par with teachers such as Rufino Tamayo and Guayasamín, who affirmed and were shocked and trapped in front of the work of Ramón Oviedo, confirm once again the greatness of this creator committed to his time and that he was the most socially committed artist with their country and their culture. His works are masterfully colored drawings; I used acrylic because I always consider that it was more suitable for painting-drawing - with freedom what is embodied with the plasticity that a good work requires.
Ramón Oviedo was born in Barahona, Dominican Republic; There he spent his 5 years as a child, at his young age he came to reside in Santo Domingo, with his father where he spent all his years of life, his father was an extraordinary cartoonist, Mr. Luis Oviedo Patiño, who illustrated the cover of the first Dominican record and many plans of Gazcue were drawn by him, he illustrated textbooks, winner of the first prize for having written "Ciudad Trujillo, RD" on a grain of rice and many more recognitions.
Ramón Oviedo from his childhood years drew on any surface such as earth, sand, scratched all notebooks and walls with his drawings, which were praised by those present, as he drew with innate and sure skill of a precocious child; At the age of 7 he liked to create and invent, so much so that he designed everything he observed, perfectly creating objects such as small planes and hooks to hold clothes. He worked for 12 consecutive years at the University Cartographic Institute, where he received a scholarship to go to study and perfect cartography, in the Panama Canal, there they named it as "The Human Printing" because he drew the letters as if they were from a printing press; He drew from those years (1943) in pencil the drawings "Guillermina" and "Constance" in an extraordinary way, demonstrating mastery of drawing and human figure. They put him to drawing and were amazed at his innate genius; together with his dedication and great desire to go far, they opened the doors for him to cultivate.
At the Santo Tomás de Aquino University, there he listened to the lectures given by the professors who arrived in the country, as refugees from Spain, where he acquired a lot of knowledge that enriched his great concerns in art, being fascinated and encouraged to continue searching for his perfection; applying it to his great work, with its unique and incomparable language, until today; even being influenced by the artists and genius universal teachers, he always demonstrated that he knew how to fly alone, creating his own style and language with techniques of his own creation; that today are references for all generations. With his works we can make classifications by time, which demonstrate the ancestry of his transformations as an artist according to his time and was never repeated, always keeping his genius, which characterizes a great creator.
Contemporary artist of large dimensions, intelligent at best, that's why he was so humble; but very firm and rigorous in his concepts, a passionate devoted to pure art, with various talents, painting being the greatest of all, he made sculptures, wrote poetry, composed songs that were brought to disk and performed by artists such as Fernando Casado and Tatis Salas left a composition referring to a cultural theme of the country ¨La Ciguapa¨ in the voice of Rubby Pérez. He was a scholar, analyst and researcher of everything related to universal man and his environment from its origin to the present day; A lover of reading, he always kept himself informed to support his logical criticism and in accordance with the times, his work covers all subjects. He was of little expression, but when he spoke he shuddered for his logical concepts and for the universal good, he loved life passionately, he was cautious and precise, that is why he became nonagenarian, he was restrained, slow and very respectful of the rights of others, but very clear and sincere when making his judgment, because when he made them, he had already thoroughly analyzed them, he was accurate and precise.
A large-scale muralist, an in-depth student of the history of peoples and his, from pre-Hispanic times to the present day, he investigated everything to authentically capture what had happened and, as he interpreted it, his institutional and local murals speak of greatness. from that creator, who transformed the Dominican mural painting with his extraordinary compositions, uniting the classic with the modern, based on pure art, where plasticity and mastery of drawing give it a solidity with unique beauty from an outstanding artist; Free artist because he was sure of what he expressed with much singular authenticity of his logical concepts, that is why today his creations are forceful, unique, they are representative monuments of Dominican art for the world, Ramón Oviedo valued himself and his work by artists and critics of notary art and representatives of universal art; He always received the recognition and praise of his representatives of the national arts, as well as the unfavorable criticism of some daring, but Ramón Oviedo remained resistant and transforming his monumental representative work based on good pure art, which always identified him, as the artist that he placed Dominican national and international arts at the top with great prestige and respect, applauded by many who always considered them as the number one artist of the Dominican plastic arts; his works today are reference, his universal themes, his lectionary concepts based on realities.

Ramón Oviedo did not waste his time on anything that did not have an enriching substance for the universal human being; admirer of all those who cultivated to magnify the dumb. She had a select taste for everything that was valuable and fine, as an example, good music and everything that was authentic beauty, she had an eye to capture feminine body perfection to the fullest; her houses are full of designs and colors that are faithful testimony to her exquisite tastes out of the ordinary, her creations that speak of her customs and preferences. He was not a lover of travel, but among the trips he made, he tried to visit the quality places where there were testimonies of the pure and good art of the nations, who later returned fascinated by the knowledge and great beauties of what he had enjoyed, he was a curious person. positive of everything that will leave you a good and valuable lesson. Every time he had to make a work, where he had been selected, he would spend whole nights without sleeping peacefully, until he took it to the canvas in a masterful way, with creative capacity, with certainty and logic, to achieve the maximum, which in the end were always the impact before the eyes of the spectators. Admirable artist, tireless worker, who tried by all means to approach perfection in everything; his works are good and beautiful, full of passion, with an incomparable transparency, very well managed, leaving a reference and continental universal legacy; Artist pride of the Dominican Republic to the world, the immensity of his work in stages, speak of an artist, great, universal and continental reference forever.
