En el año 2015, el Ministerio de Cultura de la República Dominicana, otorga el Premio Nacional de Artes Visuales al genial y consagrado artista José Cestero (1937), uno de los máximos exponentes del arte dominicano de la modernidad y creador de uno de los universos simbólicos más lúcidos y delirantes de las artes plásticas y visuales dominicanas contemporáneas. Durante los últimos años, la idea de la realización exitosa de la exposición retrospectiva de José Cestero en el Museo de Arte Moderno no sólo se tornaría en el más grande sueño del propio artista, sino también en un objetivo primordial y un auténtico desafío.
Así, el Ministerio de Cultura; la Fundación de Arte Arawak; la Fundación Arte Dom y el Museo de Arte Moderno, con los auspicios del Banco de Reservas, han reunido esfuerzos y recursos para la organización de la esperada exposición retrospectiva del maestro, titulada “JOSÉ CESTERO: NOTAS SUELTAS PARA CONTAR”, constituyéndose en su primera gran muestra retrospectiva en el Museo de Arte Moderno y reuniendo más de 120 obras, entre pinturas, dibujos y esculturas, realizadas por este ingenioso, genial y prolífico artista dominicano en el trayecto de las últimas siete décadas.
Un primer núcleo de obras paradigmáticas, caracterizadas por su rigurosa factura estética, la intensa pulsión reflexiva de sus tétricas superficies y la estremecedora carga dramática que signa su postexpresionismo de profundo contenido social durante las décadas de los 60 y 70 del siglo XX; los escenarios urbanos; las visiones del delirio citadino; los humedales de los ríos Ozama e Isabela; las marinas; los personajes populares; los monumentos coloniales; El Quijote; las citas y apropiaciones de las obras de sus grandes admirados universales, además de los retratos, autorretratos y paisajes conceptuales, constituyen los ejes temáticos fundamentales de la exposición.
La vastedad temática y la diversidad estilística de la producción de pictórica y dibujística de José Cestero, así como la misma magnitud del cuerpo expositivo, integrado por obras procedentes de distintas colecciones públicas y privadas del país, han requerido un despliegue museográfico contextualizado, articulador y esclarecedor que se desarrolla, expande y sostiene con gran fluidez y notable capacidad didáctica a través de los dos primeros niveles del Museo de Arte Moderno.
En sus aspectos curatoriales y museográficos, la muestra se refuerza con fotografías, libros, catálogos, videos y documentos, además de diferentes textos biográficos y reflexivos que permiten un recorrido histórico, estilístico, temático y didáctico a través de la obra y la trayectoria del artista. Asimismo, considerando la especial relación vital y afectiva del Maestro José Cestero con LA CAFETERA, hemos querido sumar la recreación museográfica de su lúdico y poético ambiente interior como elemento evocador no sólo de la memoria íntima y emocional del Maestro Cestero, sino también de la bohemia citadina y su conexión vital con este mítico espacio cultural y recreativo de la Calle El Conde y la Ciudad Colonial de Santo Domingo con sus infalibles contertulios y fabuladores del delirio…

In 2015, the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic awarded the National Prize for Visual Arts to the great and consecrated artist José Cestero (1937), one of the greatest exponents of modern Dominican art and creator of one of the universes most lucid and delusional symbolic elements of contemporary Dominican plastic and visual arts. In recent years, the idea of holding the José Cestero retrospective exhibition successfully at the Museum of Modern Art would not only become the artist's greatest dream, but also a primary goal and a real challenge.
Thus, the Ministry of Culture; the Arawak Art Foundation; the Fundación Arte Dom and the Museo de Arte Moderno, under the auspices of the Banco de Reservas, have pooled efforts and resources to organize the long-awaited retrospective exhibition of the master, entitled "JOSÉ CESTERO: SOLE NOTES TO COUNT", constituting his first great retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art and bringing together more than 120 works, including paintings, drawings and sculptures, made by this ingenious, brilliant and prolific Dominican artist over the course of the last seven decades.
A first nucleus of paradigmatic works, characterized by their rigorous aesthetic invoice, the intense reflexive impulse of their gloomy surfaces and the shocking dramatic charge that marks their post-expressionism of profound social content during the 60s and 70s of the 20th century; urban settings; the visions of city delirium; the wetlands of the Ozama and Isabela rivers; the marine ones; popular characters; colonial monuments; The Quijote; the quotes and appropriations of the works of the great universal admirers of him, in addition to the portraits, self-portraits and conceptual landscapes, constitute the fundamental thematic axes of the exhibition.
The thematic vastness and the stylistic diversity of the pictorial and drawing production of José Cestero, as well as the same magnitude of the exhibition body, made up of works from different public and private collections in the country, have required a contextualized, articulating and illuminating museographic display. which develops, expands and sustains with great fluidity and remarkable didactic capacity through the first two levels of the Museum of Modern Art.
In its curatorial and museographic aspects, the exhibition is reinforced with photographs, books, catalogues, videos and documents, in addition to different biographical and reflective texts that allow a historical, stylistic, thematic and didactic journey through the artist's work and career. . Likewise, considering the special vital and affective relationship of Master José Cestero with LA CAFETERA, we wanted to add the museographic recreation of its playful and poetic interior environment as an evocative element not only of the intimate and emotional memory of Master Cestero, but also of the bohemian city and its vital connection with this mythical cultural and recreational space of Calle El Conde and the Colonial City of Santo Domingo with its infallible fellow members and storytellers of delirium...
