El maestro José García Cordero logra el Premio Nacional de Artes Visuales 2023 por su vasta trayectoria.
El Ministerio de Cultura anunció este viernes la concesión del Premio Nacional de Artes Visuales 2023 al maestro José García Cordero, atribuyendo la elección a su vasta trayectoria e invaluables aportes al desarrollo del arte dominicano.
La decisión del jurado del Premio Nacional Artes Visuales se tomó luego de varias jornadas de trabajo y ponderar a más de 15 artistas. El jurado presidido por la ministra de Cultura, Milagros Germán, contó con la coordinación del viceministro Giovanny Cruz.
En relación a esta designación, la ministra Germán expresó: "Este premio es un reconocimiento merecido para el maestro García Cordero, cuya contribución al arte dominicano y su impacto a nivel internacional son sobresalientes. Su obra es un tesoro cultural que enriquece nuestra identidad y proyecta la excelencia artística de la República Dominicana en el escenario mundial".
Detalles Biográficos
Estudió pintura con el maestro dominicano Gilberto Hernández Ortega.
En 1977, por su oposición al gobierno de Joaquín Balaguer, decidió mudarse a París y asumir un exilio voluntario,3 donde estudió Historia Contemporánea en la [Universidad de Paris 8]].
En 1994, formó parte de "Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo de la República Dominicana", en Americas Society of New York45 y el Bass Museum of Art de Miami Beach.6
En 1995 exhibió el show itinerante "Visiones Caribeñas" en el Smithsonian Museum, Washington D. C., Centro de Bellas Artes, actualmente llamado Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), entre otras instituciones. Judy Cantor, de Miami New Times escribe:
"En la escalera que lleva a la exhibición cuelga "Las Palmas de Morel", por el pintor Dominicano José García Cordero. Representando la pequeña figura de un artista que se para en su caballete debajo de enormes palmas soplando ferozmente en altos vientos, la pintura provee una alternativa inquietante a la imagen tranquila del paisaje Caribeño.
[...] la pintura de García Cordero insinúa que "Caribbean Visions" podría ser una inspección provocativa de arte contemporáneo inspirado [...].",7
En 1996 fue seleccionado para el "Premio Marco" en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo en Monterrey, México. ARCO Madrid 97 "Latinoamérica en Arco", por parte de la galería Lyle O. Reitzel y curado por Octavio Zaya.8
Sus obras han sido exhibidas en ferias de arte contemporáneo alrededor del mundo tales como Context Art Miami9 durante Art Basel, ArteBA Buenos Aires, Argentina, MIArt Milan, Italia, Scope NY,10 Scope Miami,11 entre otros.121314
En 2016, tuvo su primer solo show en New York, "Tales from the Caribbean Nights" en la apertura de la nueva sucursal de Lyle O. Reitzel NY.151617 Esta exhibición es un cuerpo de 13 pinturas, la mayoría no publicadas, producidas en acrílico sobre lino, las cuales abarcan el período de 2005-2016.

The teacher José García Cordero achieves the 2023 National Visual Arts Award for his vast career.
The Ministry of Culture announced this Friday the awarding of the 2023 National Prize for Visual Arts to master José García Cordero, attributing the choice to his vast career and invaluable contributions to the development of Dominican art.
The decision of the jury of the National Visual Arts Award was made after several days of work and weighing more than 15 artists. The jury chaired by the Minister of Culture, Milagros Germán, was coordinated by the Vice Minister Giovanny Cruz.
In relation to this designation, Minister Germán expressed: "This award is a well-deserved recognition for maestro García Cordero, whose contribution to Dominican art and its impact at an international level are outstanding. His work is a cultural treasure that enriches our identity and projects the artistic excellence of the Dominican Republic on the world stage".
Biographical Details
He studied painting with the Dominican master Gilberto Hernández Ortega.
In 1977, due to his opposition to the government of Joaquín Balaguer, he decided to move to Paris and assume a voluntary exile, 3 where he studied Contemporary History at the [University of Paris 8]].
In 1994, he was part of "Modern and Contemporary Art of the Dominican Republic", at the Americas Society of New York45 and the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach.6
In 1995 he exhibited the traveling show "Caribbean Visions" at the Smithsonian Museum, Washington D.C., Fine Arts Center, currently called Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), among other institutions. Miami New Times' Judy Cantor writes:
"On the staircase leading to the exhibition hangs "Las Palmas de Morel," by Dominican painter José García Cordero. Depicting the small figure of an artist standing at his easel beneath enormous palms blowing fiercely in high winds, the painting provides a disturbing alternative to the tranquil image of the Caribbean landscape.
[...] García Cordero's painting hints that "Caribbean Visions" could be a provocative survey of inspired contemporary art [...].",7
In 1996 he was selected for the "Marco Prize" at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Monterrey, Mexico. ARCO Madrid 97 "Latin America in Arco", by the Lyle O. Reitzel gallery and curated by Octavio Zaya.8
His works have been exhibited in contemporary art fairs around the world such as Context Art Miami9 during Art Basel, ArteBA Buenos Aires, Argentina, MIArt Milan, Italy, Scope NY,10 Scope Miami,11 among others.1213 14
In 2016, he had his first solo show in New York, "Tales from the Caribbean Nights" at the opening of the new Lyle O. Reitzel NY branch.151617 This exhibition is a body of 13 paintings, most unpublished, produced in acrylic on linen, which cover the period 2005-2016.
