MANUEL MONTILLa define una selección de acuarelas sobre papel, ejecutadas entre 2008 y 2022. Son trabajos de una factura técnica y estética primorosa que su apreciación como auténtica filigrana del dibujo dominicano contemporáneo y a través de los cuales Manuel Montilla logra configurar y suscitar unas superficies plásticas y unos juegos texturales provocadores de tonalidades cálidas y sutiles, vitalizados por cuerpos mistificados y objetos magnéticos que traslucen de forma cristalina sus máximas obsesiones, sentimientos, reflexiones y percepciones estéticas. olladas por Manuel Montilla a lo largo de las últimas cinco décadas.
Con un despliegue museográfico evolutivo y referente en los espacios del segundo nivel del MAM, el cuerpo de obras adquiere su densidad y equilibrio estructurales propios a base de cuatro ejes principales de obras representativas de las diversas etapas creadoras de Manuel Montilla. El primer eje se define mediante una selección trenzada de dibujos, ceras, grabados en diversas técnicas sobre papel y trabajos pictóricos sobre tela, datados entre finales de las décadas los 60s e inicios de los 80s del siglo XX.
El segundo eje, concentra un extracto esencial de la producción pictórica de Manuel Montilla ejecutada en el proceso de desarrollo y depuración de su universo visual y su caudal simbólico, reuniendo más de 100 pinturas escogidas de sus series de mayor síntesis expresiva, rigor conceptual, exuberancia del gesto y capacidad sugestiva del color, la textura de la materia, la signografía, el aire enrarecido y esplendente de los espacios de la sorpresa y la imagen surreal, como las tituladas “Lamento Antillano”; “Sentimiento Latinoamericano”; “Fragmentación de un Gaga” y “Orígenes” (1983-1992).
El tercer eje lo define una selección de acuarelas sobre papel, ejecutadas entre 2008 y 2022. El cuarto eje, está compuesto por 36 esculturas en terracota, bronce y fibra de vidrio policromada, ejecutadas entre 2000 y 2016. Este eje, incluye “Mujer sentada”, majestuosa figura en terracota que le valdría la aprobación con honores en su examen final de la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes (1974); el boceto en fibra sintética de su expresiva escultura “Libertad de Pensamiento”, instalada en el área exterior de la Biblioteca Pedro Mir de la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (2000) y la vivaz y todavía más cautivadora instalación escultórica “La vida fluye en el Universo” (2016).
La mayoría de las esculturas de Manuel Montilla, son proyectos monumentales. La selección, además de testimoniar su pasión por la forma y el dominio admirable del artista sobre el medio escultórico, también muestran la calidez del signo cultural y la irresistible gravitación de lo ancestral, lo astral y lo ontológico que resalta en toda su obra. En este sentido, resultan definitivas sus exploraciones sobre los enigmas de la memoria y el tiempo; lo real maravilloso latinoamericano y caribeño; el absurdo cotidiano; el sueño y las réplicas de la consciencia identitaria.
Además de la esmerada factura estética y el proceso de refinamiento de una dicción plástica personal basada en formas orgánicas y geométricas complejas, sus dibujos, acuarelas, grabados, pinturas y esculturas, traslucen el activo linaje surrealista del universo imaginario de Manuel Montilla, todo esto, desde luego, sin olvidar el conmovedor grado de brillantez que singulariza su pensamiento estético.
El cuerpo de obras de esta gran muestra retrospectiva, nos permite advertir a Manuel Montilla a través del arduo y fructífero proceso en que concibe y materializa una obra propia, universal y trascendente, caracterizada por su magnetismo lúdico, sus resistentes puntales progresivos y sus densos rizomas identitarios. Esta selección, también confirma que la obra pictórica de Montilla posee sus propios elementos conceptuales, espaciales y sorpresivos; su propia luz; su propia tonada cromática; su propio ritmo; su propia mística y su propia vitalidad.
En su trayecto creador de más de cinco décadas, entre Santo Domingo y Madrid, Manuel Montilla, materializa un universo simbólico de radical linaje surrealista a través de una producción tan extensa y diversa como sugestiva, cuyos atributos y dominios estéticos sustanciales son el rigor del proceso y la maestría del oficio. Asimismo, entre las cualidades propias del sistema pictórico y el Cosmos simbólico de Montilla, destacan la sistematización meticulosa del espacio visual, la superficie imagética y el electrizante sumario de materias y motivos: naturaleza, corporeidad, objeto, signo cultural, subjetividad, remanencias espirituales, destellos siderales, puzzles metafóricos y quimeras inefables.
