El arquitecto Eduardo Selman fue posesionado hoy como ministro de Cultura de la República Dominicana, durante un acto efectuado en el despacho de la institución, ocasión que aprovechó para solicitar el respaldo del personal del ministerio.
“En primer lugar debo agradecer al presidente Danilo Medina la confianza que ha depositado en mis manos al entregarme la dirección de este importante ministerio”, expresó Selman al ser posesionado en el cargo por el ministro administrativo de la Presidencia, José Ramón Peralta.
El funcionario solicitó al personal del Ministerio de Cultura que coopere con su gestión igual como lo hicieron con Pedro Vergés.
Selman dijo que en su gestión se propone transitar con la misma honestidad con que lo hizo Vergés, quien ocupaba el cargo de ministro de Cultura desde el 16 de agosto del 2011.
Agregó que tratará de seguir los planes ya establecidos y de innovar, quizás, en algunas áreas donde haya podido ser necesario intervenir, para lo que requiere del apoyo del personal del Ministerio de Cultura y del ministro de la Presidencia, “y desde luego, pretendiendo no defraudar ni al presidente ni al pueblo dominicano a quien me debo”. Selman fue designado en el cargo por el presidente de la República Danilo Medina, mediante decreto 168-18, en lugar del escritor y diplomático Pedro Vergés.
El ministro de la Presidencia, José Ramón Peralta, destacó las cualidades humanas y políticas del nuevo funcionario, quien ya había sido juramentado por el presidente Medina durante una ceremonia efectuada en el Palacio Nacional.
“Hemos venido aquí por mandato del presidente Danilo Medina a poner en posesión a Eduardo Selman, y, sobre todo, a agradecer a Pedro Vergés el trabajo que ha hecho en el Ministerio de Cultura”, manifestó Peralta.
Peralta aprovechó el momento para desearle a Eduardo Selman los mayores de los éxitos. Lo definió como un hombre comprometido con la obra del presidente Medina, “un hombre comprometido con este país y que sabrá hacer y llevar a la cultura dominicana por el camino que debe ir. En todo eso puedes contar con el apoyo nuestro y de la Presidencia”.
En el acto también habló Pedro Vergés, quien agradeció al presidente Medina la confianza de haberlo designado en el cargo el 16 de agosto del 2016.
El saliente funcionario dijo sentirse complacido de que sea Eduardo Selman quien tome las riendas del Ministerio de Cultura.
“Así, que yo en ese sentido, me siento conforme conmigo mismo, conforme con la decisión del presidente y conforme con la designación de Eduardo Selman”, expresó Vergés.
Luego de ser posesionado, fue celebrado un acto de recibimiento al nuevo ministro y de despedida del saliente, actividad que tuvo lugar en el lobby del Ministerio de Cultura.
Selman es el quinto Ministro de Cultura desde que este ente estatal fuera creado mediante ley 41-00. Los anteriores en ocupar el puesto son Tony Raful, José Rafael Lantigua, José Antonio Rodríguez y Pedro Vergés.
Sobre el nuevo Ministro de Cultura
Selman es un reconocido empresario; destacado dirigente del Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) y miembro de su comité político. Fue secretario de finanzas del partido desde 1991 hasta el 2006.
Ha ocupado diversos cargos en la administración pública, entre ellos el de secretario técnico de la Presidencia (1996-1998); director general de la desaparecida Corporación Dominicana de Empresas Estatales (CORDE), con rango de secretario de estado (1998-2000); cónsul dominicano en Nueva York y miembro del Consejo de Administración de la CDEEE, entre otras funciones públicas.
Está entre los dirigentes que mantuvo vínculos estrechos con el profesor Juan Bosch, fundador del PLD. Esas relaciones con Bosch se iniciaron en octubre de 1961 y desde entonces participó junto a él en las jornadas libertarias. Estuvo entre los fundadores del PLD, en el 1973.
Selman es considerado uno de los pioneros en República Dominicana en el ejercicio profesional de la arquitectura, así como de ser creador de obras importantes de impacto urbanístico en los campos habitacional, institucional, comercial y hotelero, que le han merecido reconocimientos nacionales e internacionales.
Como empresario, ha compartido con su núcleo familiar exitosas empresas en las áreas de la construcción, el turismo, las finanzas, la industria, energía e informática.
Selman nació en Santo Domingo el 23 de marzo del 1941. Graduado de arquitecto en la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (1963). Realizó estudios de post grado en arquitectura y urbanismo en París, Francia, y Bruselas, a través de una beca concedida por el gobierno presidido por Juan Bosch (1963-1965). Hizo un post-grado en planificación de hospitales (UASD, 1967), fue profesor de diseño arquitectónico y urbanismo (director del departamento de diseño de la escuela de arquitectura (UASD 1967-1975). Y obtuvo una Maestría en Ciencias Políticas de la Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (1985).

Pedro Vergés also spoke at the event, who thanked President Medina for the confidence of having appointed him to the post on August 16, 2016.
The outgoing official said he was pleased that it was Eduardo Selman who took the reins of the Ministry of Culture.
"So, in that sense, I feel satisfied with myself, in accordance with the decision of the president and in accordance with the designation of Eduardo Selman," said Vergés.
After being taken over, an act of welcome to the new minister and farewell of the outgoing was celebrated, an activity that took place in the lobby of the Ministry of Culture.
Selman is the fifth Minister of Culture since this state entity was created by law 41-00. The previous ones in the position are Tony Raful, José Rafael Lantigua, José Antonio Rodríguez and Pedro Vergés.
About the new Minister of Culture
Selman is a recognized businessman; prominent leader of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and member of its political committee. He was the party's finance secretary from 1991 to 2006.
He has held various positions in public administration, including that of technical secretary of the Presidency (1996-1998); general director of the defunct Dominican Corporation of State Enterprises (CORDE), with the rank of secretary of state (1998-2000); Dominican consul in New York and member of the Board of Directors of the CDEEE, among other public functions.
He is among the leaders who maintained close ties with Professor Juan Bosch, founder of the PLD. These relations with Bosch began in October 1961 and since then he participated with him in the libertarian days. He was among the founders of the PLD, in 1973.
Selman is considered one of the pioneers in the Dominican Republic in the professional practice of architecture, as well as being a creator of important works of urban impact in the housing, institutional, commercial and hotel fields, which have earned him national and international recognition.
As an entrepreneur, he has shared successful businesses with his family in the areas of construction, tourism, finance, industry, energy and information technology.
Selman was born in Santo Domingo on March 23, 1941. Graduated as an architect from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (1963). He completed post-graduate studies in architecture and urban planning in Paris, France, and Brussels, through a scholarship granted by the government chaired by Juan Bosch (1963-1965). He did a post-degree in hospital planning (UASD, 1967), was a professor of architectural design and urbanism (director of the design department of the school of architecture (UASD 1967-1975) and obtained a Masters in Political Science from the University National Pedro Henríquez Ureña (1985).
