The interest in considering photography as an art manifested itself in the first half of the 20th century, when surrealism in France invited us to think about and recognize photography as a medium capable of questioning the image, and to consider the field of sight and visibility as the possibility of directing the gaze to the cerebral and psychological space; that is, to the close connected relationship between seeing, feeling, interpreting, to then produce in the image that inexplicable feeling, that revelation of metaphors and suggestions that, from the subject within reality, go further and provoke a transformation creative of it.

Dadaism, surrealism, constructivism and futurism multiplied experimentations, without contributing to displacing the idea of art, considering that experimental and renewed photography represented a force of vision, composition and construction that had to be taken into account, since image is about.

Rodtchenko considered photography as the art of the century and of its time, while Laszlo Moholy Nagi, a professor at the Bauhaus, defended the idea that the arts should take technical innovations more into account, to the point of declaring “these are the very laws of photography , and not the art critics, who constitute the innovative and revolutionary heritage of photography, and only the future will confirm the value of this art”. Today we can confirm the success of this visionary dimension of the author.

Dadaism exploited the same concept of creativity with new techniques for capturing the image and freedom of manipulation of the negatives. He made possible the game of composition of objects, of collages and stagings that could reactivate the game of reality without the need to fall into figurative and frontal realism. With the Dadaists, the gaze and the focus became playful instruments, with games and regames that invited a discursive anarchy possible and applauded in all artistic mediums.

Surrealism welcomed photomontages, solarizations, image distortions as part of its manifesto about reality; but, above all, it allowed the unconscious world to be revealed in a double etymological sense to show the absurd, the strange.

In these directions, the masters Man Ray, Brassai Blumenfeld, and Kertesz created unforgettable images in the history of plastic photography. We understand that this is nourished by all the approaches of the European avant-gardes that, from the black camera, and the operative machine, stage the capture of the still image and turn it into a conceptual and dramatic discourse.

In the United States, alongside straight photography, represented by Weston and Paul Stand, that same strength and conviction in aesthetic research and research will prevail. 10 It is indisputable that Rosalind Krauss questions the legitimacy granted to Peter Galassi, curator of the “Before Photography” exhibition, organized at Moma New York in 1981, presenting works by Timothy O'Sullivan, at a time when no one accepted that they were magnificent , declaring: "Photography is not a bastard of science, abandoned in the hall of the arts, but it is a legitimate daughter of the Western pastoralist tradition."

From this moment on, the dispute of the great diversity of resources and techniques of photography to achieve a work of art is broken.

Then the creative and reproductive freedom of the photographic image and its proven resources in its multiple possibilities in Pop Art, Land Art, conceptual art and performances are announced, taking a place of first order in the second half of the 20th century. , and triumphing in the face of all fears and prejudices. The field remains open on the European continent and in the Americas, so that lens artists, inheritors of all the intellectual approaches of the avant-garde and post-avant-garde, conceive and execute the image beyond the camera obscura, with the entire horizon of the environment and reality to intervene.

The work of Ángel Ricardo Rivera -as a whole-, from the start of his artistic career, is determined from the outset in the emotional and sensory field before encompassing the decisive elements in the face of technique and the technological register. The first look at each of the images of him clearly confirms that a whole mental process proceeds first before the trigger. The composition of the image is fully connected with his aesthetic thinking. He is a composer of emotional effect. If the trigger captures and captures the vision of the moment, that technical resonance lands on the viewer with signs of sensations that lead you to enter the work, and seek in it what awakens in you, outside of the intention if there is intention, of the artist, great communicator and visual connector.

His works are composed with the virtue of drawing and painting; they are pictures, above the digital medium. It is obvious that it is from the camera that the first raw, immediate image emerges, and on it comes the visual semantics of the artist who intervenes the image taken at the last moment of his cerebral decision, until achieving that new work that is the result free of its interpretation and goblin of the immediate vision.

The Circular Prelude series offers visual attractions that embrace results of great aesthetic and compositional diversity.

It attracts attention, within the circular construction, the work invoiced with very minimalist resources of great organic depth, which allows a location within the limits of sand and earth in a concert of gray and ocher, where the aquatic transparency suggests an embrace body of two indefinite human beings. We are facing a set design that leads us to interpret a drama, a situation captured in a still image; but if it were to start moving, it would take us to an erotic and silent film from the beginning of the 20th century, in a sober experimentation between land and water with the free evocation of the body.

We have another discourse on dry land, where herbalist twigs and a dry stick, with a suggestive evocation of a white flower or lost cotton, clarify with the play of lights, the probability of an animal or human anatomy lost in the desert... Here a variation of black and white intervenes with a pointillism character just as it happens in painting.

The figurative effects of visual reality are signified by the work with an aerial subject, represented by the probability of a vulture, the specter of an eagle on the petrified trunk of a dead person. The background, a calculated and composed composition between black, white and gray tones that harmonize in its horizontality, verticality and elevation of the dry wood.

In this image, a drama that threatens life is pronounced with comparative symbols between heaven and earth. In these three images, the artist achieved the tension of the subject and in various levels and layers that contain a fabric, a plot, as if we were facing a pictorial composition, leaving several possible penetrations of the matter.

In his aerial reaches, you have to go deep into photography to position yourself or locate yourself in space, because the limit between land and sea, sea and sky is very narrow, prolonged in a cosmic fusion, where the viewer has to look for the purpose visual to reach the depth and the bottom, to find in a single direction of sight the fuchsia color in the celestial heights, in which a fish remains in a state of levitation, and in the whole circle a discursive dialectic is developed through the transparencies and the organic fabric of matter, which leads us to the optical game of the volcano evoked in a premonitory composition that, indisputably, takes us in a third plane to the female breast of the recumbent body. The whole of this work produces a totalizing impression of the meeting of earthly elements between air, land and sea with punctuated effects in a surreal discourse of the fish floating in the clouds...

In another image, we return to the symphony that begins in the foreground with the ocher of the dry and petrified vegetation on a mound of sticks taken from an aerial takeoff plane, to reach a lace of black twigs, whose matter forms a botanical fabric under the thin and straight wire, where three black birds, pretty Marys or ravens, remain under the storm of a low gray sky as in the poem ´Spleen´, by Charles Baudelaire. The ´Spleen´, the melancholy, the nostalgia... Here is the feeling of high measure with time and space, buried emotion and rediscovered from the silent unconscious until its reunion in the comings and goings of memory, with a tempo and a rhythm that only the beating of the heart can measure, when, as in Proust's rediscovered time, memory becomes writing. Here an image is made composed of organic elements that awaken the carnal spectrum as in “Sensualism in Las dunas de Baní”. In the foreground, in figurative evocation, fine sand with a metaphor of living skin, where a mound discreetly emerges, a pubis crowned by a forest, whose foliage confirms the female organ against a barely evoked horizon line. The spatial distribution returns to a circular totality, because Galileo issued it with the astonishment of science "turns, turns" and is "round".

The touch of color with turquoise branches, in the midst of the storm of the background of black diluted in anthracite transparencies, technically provokes the result of watery paint, when black and white hold the nuances of light and shadow that make up the dramatic dimension in visual speech.

The field of the artist Ángel Ricardo Rivera turns in a detonation decided by a look that he finds in the appropriation ation of the natural elements of land and sea the keys to an image that can emerge first from the detail, an accidental line in the sand, leading us to the erotic vision of the vaginal lips. The artist interprets the uneven encounters of natural elements like that writer who was in a found space to be able to bring out the word, the writing, the plot with his presence and gaze.

Ángel Ricardo Rivera would then be searching in his circular preludes for the object element that would lead him to extract from his memory and from his silent recollections, the traces and traces of a woman's body, wrapped in the infinite sights of a poetic, in search of emotions that decide the taking and composition of an image, inhabited and dressed by the fusion of form and body as in the work “Valle onírico del Preludio”.

A body whose anatomy lying down becomes a horizon of dunes in the very center of the circle, and which evolves in several images 'against winds and tides', imposing the nudity of a back with a cinematographic pose, with visual signs that attract the viewer to fragment their encounters from delicately generous hips, whose line of separation is led by the spine that reaches a loose and free hair. It is indisputable that the artist Ángel Ricardo Rivera starts in his search for an uncertainty that opens up in visual encounters, with an operative rhythm that starts from the evocative and detonating detail of a detailed and minimalist stage, which builds a referential writing of metaphorical evocations until , finally, reaching the gradual reappearance of an image of a woman "behind the curtain", and turning her into an elf and model of the whole, divided into a "Circular Prelude" of nostalgia and melancholy.

The strength of this series lies in its ability to convert an image into visual writing of the most secret of feelings, erotic memory...
